This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out the new 2in1 recipe mixes from Schwartz.

Here's what they say: "The new 2in1 range offers two easy to use recipe mix sachets in one handy pack: one sachet flavours the main dish whilst the other contains a seasoning for a complementary side dish or topping. With five different varieties to choose from, and an easy recipe on the back of each pack, this is a great way to try out new dishes or transform an existing family favourite from ordinary to special."

Mumsnetters have been trying the following recipe mixes:

Which recipe mix did you try?

  • The chicken tikka bites and mint and cucumber raita dip. We had it with naan bread, poppadoms and some Indian side dishes.

How would you rate the mix out of 5?

  • DH and I both liked it so would give it a 4, the DC's found the chicken too spicy and DS doesn't like dips so would give it 2

What did you think of the overall flavour?

  • It was quite hot - probably because I had marinaded it overnight and I spread the sauce quite thickly over the chicken before grilling. So too hot for the DC's, a little hotter than I would normally have but DH found it just right! The flavour was great though and the dip was lovely.

How easy was it to use?

  • You have to plan ahead if you want to marinade it overnight but it wasn't too fiddly and the raita was really quick to make.

Did you follow the recipe?

  • I used less oil and Greek yoghurt for the marinade and raita and left out the onion from the raita as the DC's aren't keen on raw onion!

Would you say the mix made the mealtime easier?

  • Yes although you need to plan ahead to marinade the chicken fully. It's not something I have made before and probably wouldn't attempt it without the convenience of ready mixed spices and herbs.

Would you buy the mix again?

  • Yes I probably would buy this one again although I would marinade it for less time or cut back on the amount of spice mix used in the marinade so it would be milder for the DC's.

Overall did you love, like or hate it?

  • I would say overall we liked it and with a bit of tweaking re the heat I think the DC's would like it too!

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Southern style crunchy chicken bites + BBQ dip

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

3

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

Me, DH and our 4 DC tried the mix and only 1 of the DC wasn't keen. It had a gentle kick to it and I thought it was quite a child-friendly flavour, especially the dip.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy. The mix was very fine which helped to give the chicken an even coating and the dip required almost no prep.

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

We followed the recipe and served it with the other chicken bites mix as there are 6 of us, a big salad and some onion and Mediterranean breads.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

It was quick and easy to prepare and formed part of a different tasty meal which appealed to the DC.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I was expecting it to taste a bit 'artificial' but I was pleasantly surprised. This was the first/second ones we tried but based on this, we would most probably buy it again.

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

Liked it.

We did the pasta bake for tea today.

Outta five i'd rate it a 3, I didn't think it was that great to be honest. DS didn't like it and DH just thought it was "meh" - so not brilliant.

It was easy enough to follow the instructions and I followed the receipe. I don't think it's easier than making it from scratch so wouldn't buy it

First one tonight as have had no car for a week & despite a good selection of nearly everything else in the freezer no chicken.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Eentually I made Chicken Tikka + Mint & Cucumber Raita.
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
A poor 1
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
DH who likes chicken and curries left most of his, DS 2, spat his out. I ate mine as I'd made it and a little thing like it being revolting wasnt going to put me off.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It would have been as easy, & a damn site more tastey if I made it from scratch
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Added a clove of crushed garlic and more lemon juice in desperation.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
No as I had to find something else to eat.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
If this had been the first ever I'd used and I'd paid for it I would never be buying any more.

We all loved it
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It was very easy, especially as the top only needed grilling
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We used quorn instead of chicken
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Even my usually fussy son ate it (but he did pick the yellow pepper out!)

I would buy this one again, and do it with quorn again

We loved it. I will use this one again.

I tried Chicken Tikka + mint & cucumber raita

I would rate this recipe mix 5.

I thought the overall flavour was great. I marinated the chicken overnight. The flavour of the chicken wasn't too strong but delicious. The raita was tasty and refreshing.

The mix was very easy to use.

I followed the recipe and also added basmati rice.

This mix did make my mealtime easier as I would previously had thought that more work would have been needed to make this.

I would buy this mix again.

I loved this mix!

3

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

Me, DH and our 4 DC tried the mix. DH and I liked it but the DC weren't madly keen, especially on the dip. I though the dip was tastier than I was expecting. The chicken had a nice crunchy texture.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Overall easy although the mix didn't coat the chicken terribly well as it was chunkier and the dip was a bit of a faff.

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

We followed the recipe and served it with the other chicken bites mix as there are 6 of us, a big salad and some onion and Mediterranean breads. We don't normally eat mayo or natural yoghurt so had bought it in just for this which made the dip costly.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

It was quick and easy to prepare and formed part of a different tasty meal which appealed to the DC.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Southern style crunchy chicken bites + BBQ dip
How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
3/5
What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
The nuggets were a little bland but the BBQ sauce was excellent.
How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Really easy. About halfway through coating the chicken I did start to worry that there weren't going to be enough breadcrumbs but they just covered the chicken.
Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Followed exactly, added wedges to serve
Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
This one not so much, it didn?t speed things up and as homemade nuggets are something I already make
Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I don?t think we?d buy this one again
Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Kind of indifferent to this one. Would quite like to be able to buy the BBQ seasoning separately to make BBQ sauce as we want it instead of having another bottle in the fridge/cupboard

It was ok. I overcooked it a bit. They ate it but I don't think it was a huge hit. I found it a bit salty.

It was quite easy. I wish the packet had perforations so that you could separate them for use.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We had a salad and garlic bread with it

Sorry, this is my first post for this product test! Hopefully not too late..

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
We tried the Garlic and Thyme Roast chicken one

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) 4
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
My DH and I loved the roast potatoes like this, but couldn't tell a great deal of difference on the chicken. My DCs also loved the potatoes and the chicken.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
I followed the instructions and it was very easy.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I pretty much followed the recipe, apart from the cooking times for the chicken.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
It made it easier in that I didn't have to think about what I was going to do to make the meal a bit more exciting and interesting. The instructions were very easy to follow too.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I will definitely buy this one again I think.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
I would say I liked it. I just wasn't sure how much the flavourings enhanced the chicken itself.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Southern style crunchy chicken with BBQ dip

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
3.5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Found the chicken coating slightly spicey but yet not that tasty. Did not like colour of coating - rather artificial looking. I don't like BBQ sauce/dip but enjoyed this one.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Easy, but mix with dip took some stirring in, texture rather powdery if you didn't stir it enough.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Followed exactly
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Easy, but no easier than from scratch
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Found the packaging rather fiddly - that would put me off.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Tasty, but a little unexciting.Liked it.

Southern Style Chicken bites and BBQ sauce

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
My DCs loved this! The bites were lovely and the BBQ sauce went down very well. Its not something we have very often so it was nice for them to try a dip that wasn't just ketchup!
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I followed it exactly as on the recipe, apart from the fact that I used chicken thigh fillets as that was what I had in the freezer.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
It made it easier as I already had the ingredients to make something nice without having to think about it too much.

Yes I will probably buy this one again

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

I quite liked the chicken bites but DD found them a bit spicy. Neither of us were keen on the sauce - a bit artificial tasting.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy to use - really quick and easy

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Yes I followed the recipe - would be better if fan oven temperature was indicated

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I suppose it was easier than making them from scratch

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Garlic & herb crunchy chicken bites + cheese & chive dip

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

5/5! Best one so far!

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

My partner and I came at a disagreement with this recipe. My partner thought that the flavour on the chicken, although not being so dry as the other chicken bites, it didn't have as much flavour. I however felt that although the chicken yes was a bit bland. I felt that the dip more then enough made up for it. The cheese and chive dip is a strong flavour so I felt it complimented the chicken nicely. My son liked the chip and he couldn't get enough of it as he get filling his mouth up more and more the partner and I couldn't help but laugh. He however didn't touch his dip which I found odd as he normally loves them.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

My partner cooked this meal and he said it was very simple and easy to make.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

He followed all the instructions on the back as it was written and we had it served with chips.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would say that it did indeed make our meal times easier as I noticed this was very quick to make. I wasn't waiting for long!

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I will be looking out for this buy without a doubt! It's my favourite yet!

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

nomnomnomnom can't wait to have it again!

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Mediterranean chicken pasta + crispy crumb topping

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
3 - not a wow meal nor a yuk meal.

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
The herbs came through strongly. But overall the taste was OK.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy unlike another poster I only used 2 pans. One to cook to the pasta (I agree with another person who said that cooking the pasta should be the first step) and another to cook the actual bake (although my sauté pan can go under the grill) Next time I will combine the topping and the cheese and see if that works out better, I seemed to have pockets of topping!
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I used chicken thigh fillets rather than breasts as that is what we prefer. Also I used a red rather than a yellow pepper as that is all the shop had in stock.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
It made it easier in terms of not having to think. It is one of those things that you can have in the back of cupboard when you are very tired and need a dinner or before the food shop as they are all ingredients we would have in / pick up at local shop. But on the whole it is really not any easier than making from scratch it is more like a herb mix rather than a ready prepared meal
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

This time the Chicken Tikka + mint & cucumber raita
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
4
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
didn't serve it to the DCs but me and DH had it. He likes the raita but I didn't (I am not a cucumber fan). Tikka was lovely.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy - left to marindae whilst I dealt with children and took them to an activity
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Yes but again I used turkey - and left as steaks not chunks so we had a couple of tikka turkey steaks instead Smile
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
yes - the marinading was simple and there was plenty of sauce. Easy to just buy the low fat yoghurt and an easy way to make the meat more tasty.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
yes definitely - not something I've bought before but they are easy to use (and simple)

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
1

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Despite some deep slashes it didn?t seem to add anything to the chicken other than the skin ? dh said my homemade version was much better than the mix. The potatoes were very dry and despite cooking for longer than the packet suggested a fine powder seemed to remain
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Easy to use
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I follow the packet although I used fewer potatoes as it would have been too many for us. We served it with salad
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
No this mix did not help. It was not any quicker than my normal way also I do not usually rub so much oil onto the chicken. Plus they usually go in one pan so this way equalled more washing up.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
No ? it was not popular at all. Everyone said they preferred my usual way and as it uses fresh ingredients that is better all round

We tried the Mediterranean chicken pasta and crumbly topping last night. We'd give it a 4/5 as a family. My dd didn't like the topping so that went off her plate and I had to melt some cheese on in the microwave for her. She enjoyed it then. Dh and I weren't too keen on the topping either but the rest was ok.

It was very easy to use and the instructions were clear. I added some salad to the plates.

I don't think this pack made things any easier, I would have made a pasta bake in the same amount of time, without the crunchy topping so we would enjoy it more.

I dont think I'll buy this again. it doesn't make meal times any quicker/easier.

We like this mix, but not too keen on the topping.

Just adding this quick as I am cooking the Garlic & Thyme roast chicken + crispy roast potatoes right now and I want to be able to find the thread quick.

I'm vair vair excited as I am cooking the potatoes in my brand new combi microwave on it's convection oven setting. I'll be back!

IrritaGirl · 30/06/2013 17:13

I tried the Garlic & herb crunchy chicken bites + cheese & chive dip.
The garlic & herb coating tasted slightly sweet which I found a bit odd. The dip was ok - similar in taste to the the cheesy dip you find in multipack dips.
I followed the recipe that was on the packet - it was straightforward and easy enough to prepare, although there wasn't enough coating for the 375g of chicken that it recommends.
I'm not sure I'd buy the mix for everyday use, mainly because we wouldn't use the dip.
I'd rate this one 3/5.

IrritaGirl · 30/06/2013 17:21

We also tried the Southern style crunchy chicken bites + BBQ dip.
I made these for a picnic and they went down quite well, although no-one touched the dip (possibly because it had been sitting in a hot car all day).
Again, there isn't enough coating mix for the 375g chicken that the recipe recommends.
The mix and dip were easy enough to prepare, although I think the packet should be perforated for ease of use - I ended up with loads of mix on my worktop because I'd not shaken it all out of one end and when I tipped the other end it went everywhere (if that makes sense).
Would I buy this again? Not sure. Perhaps if it were on offer.

We all thought it was a bit bland, actually. The potatoes had a nice crunch but not much flavour and I don't think the chicken had any extra flavour at all. My favourite part of a roast chicken is the crispy skin and the skin was not crispy at all.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy.

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I followed it except for putting an onion inside the chicken as I always do and I only made about half the amount of potatoes because we wouldn't eat that many potatoes.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not really. Actually a bit harder because I'd normally just make baked potatoes with a roast chicken and it all just gets put in the oven together.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not this one, no.

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

Didn't like it. Didn't hate it. It was just sort of there.

And my new convection oven worked a treat. Grin
