This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out the new 2in1 recipe mixes from Schwartz.

Here's what they say: "The new 2in1 range offers two easy to use recipe mix sachets in one handy pack: one sachet flavours the main dish whilst the other contains a seasoning for a complementary side dish or topping. With five different varieties to choose from, and an easy recipe on the back of each pack, this is a great way to try out new dishes or transform an existing family favourite from ordinary to special."

Mumsnetters have been trying the following recipe mixes:

Below are some questions for you to answer but please do feel free to add any other comments you may also have. It made it much easier as my son made tea for us!

Definitely as the mixes are really easy to use and it means my 11 year old son can make tea for us as the recipes are very straightforward and easy for him to make.
There are also a good choice of mixes so there should be one to suit everyone

Loved it.

Dianec67 · 28/06/2013 16:39

We made the chicken Tikka and dip yesterday. It was easy to make and we made as per instructions on the packet. Both my sons enjoyed this one and we would buy it again. We gave it 4/5.

This is my second recipe test:

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Mediterranean Chicken Pasta + Cheesy Crumb topping
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

2

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

Of my two and a play date, DD hated it, it was too spicy. She ate only the chicken. DS had to be persuaded to have some, but once he tried it he said it was the best 'tomato' sauce he's had, but still not nice. He did go on to eat more though. DS's friend hates tomatoes and anything with tomatoes in it, so was convinced he wouldn't like it at all, but once he ate some, he said it was actually the best tomato-y thing he's ever had and gave it 4 out of 5.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy. Although the packet was a bit hard to open... spilt some pasta mix...

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I followed the recipe on the back, except I substituted the yellow pepper for carrots and broccoli, and I used passata instead of tinned tomatoes.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

It was quick and convenient, but it was a struggle to persuade the DCs to eat it.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

No, I think I could make a nicer, simpler pasta bake with fresh herbs and breadcrumbs myself. It just felt too much like it was processed and powdered. Not fresh enough.

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

Hated it. Sorry!!! Again...

aristocat · 28/06/2013 18:10

This is my third recipe test this week Grin

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
It was the Crunchy Chicken bites with Cheese/Chive dip.
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
2/5 Not impressed with this one to be honest. There was not enough breadcrumbs for our chicken (you will see in my photo some are hardly covered) and the crumbs were green ....
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
OK, both DCs agreed the bites were OK but do not want them again.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very very easy, my 9yr old DD did the egg/crumb by herself.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Yes, we followed the recipe. But there was not enough crumb mix.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
No, not in this case BUT they are very easy to follow and would be good for children to use (with supervision - if needed)
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, but not this one.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it
Liked it, both the crumb and the dip were OK.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

med pasta bake

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
4, my two daughters really enjoyed it but my son not so much. I think the taste was perhaps too strong for him, although he has been a grumpy teething toddler of late!
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

Daughters found it very tasty and son (3.5yrs) found too strong however we enjoyed it. Tasted like much more effort had gone into it!

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy to follow however the dipstick that I am didn't read the tabs correctly on the side whilst talking and put the topping in the mix instead! Doh!

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I used left over chicken from the Sunday roast the day before, so this made a cheap meal in all!

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes this was very quick for a tasty dinner
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? We liked it overall amd I will buy it again, doing it the correct way next time!
SisterMatic · 28/06/2013 19:23

This is my second test recipe
.
We tried the garlic and thyme chicken and crunchy potatoes.
We rated it 3/5.
We found this to be a little powdery, DD said it was nice though and it was a tasty meal.
I found it quite easy to use the packed mix.
I didn't follow the recipe as I used chicken breasts instead of a whole chicken, and I also did crunchy wedges instead of roasties. I like that I could vary a bit and the mix would still work .
it didn't make mealtimes easier but it didn't make them harder so I would buy this product agai, we liked it.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Garlic & Thyme roast chicken + crispy roast potatoes
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
3
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
They liked it. I thought the spices did improve the flavour of the chicken once I'd tweaked the delivery method but I could barely taste the roast potato spices.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I didn't add any other ingredients except some water to the roasting tin so that we got gravy. But based on feedback earlier on this thread, when I scored the breast and legs I loosened the skin away from the meat and rubbed most of the spice mix into the flesh under the skin rather than into the skin, so that more of it would flavour the meat.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Not particularly. It was about the same amount of faff that roast chicken and roast potatoes generally is (not a huge amount).
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Still not convinced. Before I started testing it sounded like a really good concept but this is the second mix in a row where I would happily buy one half (in this case the chicken mix) but wouldn't want the other (in this case the potatoes).
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Liked it.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Southern fried chicken and BBQ dip

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 being the highest) 3

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
We thought the coating was tastier that the garlic and herb one. The BBQ dip wasn't as nice as the ready made one we usually use

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It was really easy to use

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I followed the recipe

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
It was ok but if I was going to have a bung in the oven dinner then I would buy ready breaded chicken. I wouldn't bother making the BBQ sauce either.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Probably not as they weren't significantly better than the already assembled equivalent.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? It was ok.

Southern style crunchy chicken bites + BBQ dip

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
5 out of 5 - I cannot fault it at all
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
The crumb for the chicken was very flavourful and crunchy and the bbq dip was very tasty too, even using a cheap ketchup. My son loved it too and ate all he was given
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Incredibly easy to use
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Yes I followed the instructions and we used the chicken and the bbq dip in wraps
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes much easier - If making crispy chicken wraps I usually make my own crumb with breadcrumbs and spices but this was all done for me!

I would definitely buy them again if they are priced right
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Mediterranean chicken pasta + crispy crumb topping
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
3.5/5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Good flavour - quite tasty and we all seemed to like it
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
pretty easy - although the powder mix was difficult not to get everywhere, and was quite thin.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I also added an onion, more peppers than in the recipe and a tin of sweetcorn. I also put it in the oven as our grill is hopeless.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
yes - good to have the thinking behind a meal taken care of.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Possibly, might be useful to have in the cupboard as a standby.

feedback 1:

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
pasta bake with crunchy topping
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
3
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
I thought it was a bit too dried-herby. DD wolfed it down though, and DS refused to try although that's not unusual for him
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It was quite easy.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Exactly the same except swapped yellow pepper for red as DD prefers it.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
No, not really. As I had to cook the chicken/pepper and add chopped tomatoes anyway, it was no quicker really than just doing my own tomato sauce. I did like the crispy topping though, and that element was easier than making my own.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Not this one - as it was no easier than starting from scratch and the taste wasn't really worth it for me.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
I'd say "meh"
Bonkerz · 28/06/2013 20:12

Made the garlic chicken and potatoes tonight. Kids loved it. Was easy to prepare. I didn't parboil the potatoes. Just slammed them in the oven with the chicken. Was delicious and easy! Will defo buy again as it made dinner more tasty than plain chicken and spuds!

fuzzpig · 28/06/2013 20:14

feedback 2:

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Garlic and herb chicken bites with cheese dip
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
I really loved them. The breadcrumb coating was lovely and the dip went really well with it. DD ate some of the chicken, DS refused but as per my previous post that is nothing personal... DD did try the cheese dip and liked it although went back to her ketchup for dipping!
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Really easy as it's quick to do the coating and then you can just bung it in the oven and forget it while you make the dip.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Can't remember if the packet specified what cheese, but I used red leicester anyway as that's what we had in. Other than that, all the same.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Technically no, as I wouldn't normally bother making nuggets from scratch, but it is definitely worth the effort as the breadcrumbs are much nicer than what I'd make myself anyway. So I guess if I wanted to replicate this recipe from scratch, then yes, this packet would make it easier! If that makes any sense Confused
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, I am pretty sure I will buy this mix again.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Loved it! :)

Will try a third packet in the next day or two, would have done it already but they only arrived on Tuesday!

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

For the second test of the mixes we had the Garlic & Thyme roast chicken + crispy roast potatoes

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)?

A good 4

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

I liked it and DS ate all his chicken (never touches potatoes anyway) so guessing he liked it too!

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

I did the chicken but then was feeding DS2 when the potatoes needing doing so DP did them...and messed them up! They somehow ended up roasted and covered in dry powder rather than crispy flavour so based on that I'm going to say there must have been some level of difficulty to it?!

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

We followed the recipe

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, quick to get an easy midweek roast chicken done with it and get some nice flavours in

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Quite likely to buy this one again

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

Strongly liked...might have been even better if we hadnt messed up the potatoes!

GothycAngel · 28/06/2013 20:48

Garlic & Thyme roast chicken + crispy roast potatoes
rated 4/5
overall flavour liked by all :)
Quite an easy recipe to follow and we followed it word for word
definitely try again :)

Nigglenaggle · 28/06/2013 21:03

Test mark 2 - sorry no photo - I can't download them from my phone :/

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Mediterranean chicken pasta with cheesy crumb topping - although I was pleased to note there was a chicken free alternative of tuna and sweetcorn on the back which I made instead
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
4/5 - even DH said it was acceptable and inoffensive, which is high praise for a packet mix from him ^^
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
DC wouldn't try it, but he is in a really fussy phase so don't take that as a criticism. I came to it with really low expectations after the last attempt, but actually really enjoyed my meal, very tasty. I went back for seconds. If anything the pack was a little bland - I'm not sure how much it added to the flavour beyond the other ingredients, but I might make a batch without it and find out. But even DH (who isn't fussier than DC but winges more) ate it all pretty much without complaint, although he did say he would have enjoyed just cheese and oregano on the top more than the crunchy topping and wouldn't have been more effort.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It was pretty easy, but then pasta bake always is. I wouldnt have noticed that the pasta had to be cooked already until it was too late, had one of the other posters not pointed it out to me!! Would be nice to see it as a step in the recipe.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I followed the tuna version exactly.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
It was an easy and enjoyable cook, but it didnt make it easier than pasta bake would have been anyway.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I think this one I would definately have bought during my working away from home days, not sure if we will buy it again for the family, I'll see how my packet-free attempts go. The salt content is a concern for family cooking with me.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Quite liked this one, thumbs up overall :)

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Med Chicken Pasta

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
Good 4 out of 5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Both my boys liked it and so did adults too! We all like the topping.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
I found it very straightforward.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I substituted the pepper for sweetcorn and the chicken for quorn.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
it was something different and easier because I usually make pasta sauce from scratch,
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes because it was a change and because everyone liked it.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
liked very much

2nd Recipe test of the week!

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? - Pasta bake with crispy crumb top

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) - 3

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Mixed reviews. They liked the pasta but not the crispy topping. One said it tasted the same as the previous nights chicken crumb, they didnt think it added anything.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? - Easy! Again a meal the kids to join in with cooking

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? - followed it pretty much just added less peppers as kids dont really like them

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? - easier in cooking fresh (ish) food that I feel good about giving my kids.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? - Would have liked to but this particular packet contains milk. Have no clue why but as Im dairy free I couldnt eat it. So no, would not buy again for that reason. Shame.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? - Liked it Smile

So first feedback....

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Southern style crunchy chicken bites & BBQ dip

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
4
What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
The crunchy coating was a bit spicy for my ds, but he's only 2. Me and dh liked the overall flavour of the chicken but the BBQ was a bit weird tasting

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
BBQ sauce very easy, chicken was easy

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I followed the recipe but then didn't really like the bbq sauce so I mixed it in to some beans and made some cowboy beans!

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Well it took the thinking out of dinner!

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Not with this mix - if I'm going to have some southern style chicken I would normally buy it ready made, not one of my make from scratch meals.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Overall me and DH liked it

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Pasta Bake
How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
3
What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
This was enjoyed by everyone in the family, although a little bit overdone with the oregano!
How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
The main mix was more hassle than a jar of pasta bake sauce and probably on a par with making a sauce from scratch. The crunchy topping was a nice bonus though
Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We used the alternative of tuna and sweetcorn
Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
No, it was and awkward in-between a ready made sauce and making a sauce from scratch

Not this one
Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

Mix was nice and easy, dh's fine chopping of the onions was another matter...

Apart from not noticing it needed marinading (so had to wait a bit longer for dinner) this was pretty easy. All i needed to do was thrown some naan bread under the grill and we had a whole meal ready to go.

Overall I liked it. The sauce/dip looked VERY unappetising when I mixed it but it actually tasted really good. I just can't look at it!

we tried Southern style crunchy chicken bites and BBQ dip tonight I would rate this as 5/5. we all really enjoyed it, it was really easy to prepare and the dd ate it all (although two had mayonnaise instead of the bbq sauce) clean plates all round. The recipe was as easy as buying shop bought southern style chicken but much nicer, I find some of the shop ones quite greasy these were not, the dip was very tasty we had it with salad. I would say that I would buy this again as we loved it!
