B&Q unloved rooms revamp - review thread for MNers getting stuck in! NOW CLOSED

This thread is for the 20 MNers who have been chosen by B&Q to revamp an unloved room in their home.

Those selected have been sent a B&Q giftcard to buy the things they need to give their unloved room a makeover. They've undertaken to complete the makeover by 3rd June, and will be keeping us up-to-date on how their revamps are going on this thread as well as posting photos.

Please do follow their stories and add your own comments if you want to show some support!

Below are the questions we'd like testers to answer but please feel free to add your own comments too. Please give us a bit of info about the room you're revamping and what you plan to do with it in your response.

  • Why is your unloved room unloved? What do you want to change about it? What has stopped you until now?
  • Where did you get your inspiration for doing up the room from? What sort of style are you going for etc?
  • Have you had much help along the way with the revamp? If so, who from? And what sort of help - practical or ideas-based?!
  • How did you find your shopping experience at B&Q? Were the staff helpful? Did you find anything in store you maybe didn't expect to beforehand?
  • Did you use any of the help and advice that B&Q offer? This includes their videos on YouTube, leaflets and classes in store etc. If so, how useful was that help and advice?
  • If B&Q could do anything more to help you next time you visit, what would it be?
  • Have you had any feedback on what you've done with the room from family/friends? Has the transformation had a big impact on you and/or your family?

If you're not an official tester but would like to be in with a chance of winning a £200 B&Q giftcard, please post on this thread to tell us about your own room revamp successes (or failures!) - we'd love to hear from all MNers who have a room makeover story to share!

Thanks very much
MNHQ

During pictures (just a couple but we have billions at different stages if needed)

Putting finishing plaster over a hole in the wall which the previous owners had filled with cement !

Also note 'laminate floor board' cupboard blocking off old fireplace (also done by previous owners)

Babieseverywhere · 03/06/2013 14:36

View down cupboard into old fireplace..creepy.

This wall vent was papered over by previous owners, no wonder we had a mould issue in this room. Hopefully the uncovered vent will keep air circulating in the future.

DH applied plaster to both sides of cupboard. Clad it in plywood with angled pre-primed L sectioned wood corner, to make it neater and to give a paintable surface.

During.
More caulking, plaster work and stripped walls.

After.

We bought from B&Q the following items.
Set of three nesting shadow boxes, table and chairs, tv bracket, paint x 2 big tins, skirting board, caulk, plaster, gloss, sanding paper, sanding cork blocks, paint brushes, paint rollers, paint trays, tester pots, frog tape. white blackout blind for window, flush to ceiling light fixture, cleaning fluids (white spirit), bright pink coat peg rail for back of door, screws, hooks etc etc. We got a lot for our money. Thank you B&Q and Mumsnet we are very pleased with the end result and I will be painting the rest of my house in Dulux Endurance paint..I love it. :)

Also bought second hand metal purple triple bed frame from Gumtree, Butterfly wall stickers from B&M Bargains and Butterfly duvets from the sale at Argos.

Really pleased how this corner came out. Starting with cement on walls, no skirting board, laminate floor board cupboard ! It looks so much better.

Brilliant blackout blind. Worked so well, I had to wake the children up this morning !
It isn't as creased as it is in the photo today, must be as we had just put it up. Great blind.

Back around to the door, showing the purple wall.

Just a special mention for these B&Q white nesting boxes. I really like them and my DD1 wants to fill them all with her 'precious things'. :)

Last photo in our no longer 'unloved room' but our fab pink and purple butterfly children's room :)

after, the same angle, notice child asleep in bed! it was thins morning!

sorry some of these are upside down!
As you can see i was having difficulty shutting my door, because the lamp was in the way. i have now solved this problem with a new clip on lamp, but i wanted to put a shelf up in the corner to clip it onto, and put my book on. unfortunately the gas meter and electricity meter are behind the wall and i didn't feel confident enough to drill holes in there!

i might return the corner shelf i bought and get a straight bracket shelf i can put up on the side wall, which is solid and safe!

it's been brilliant, but the rest of the house is a total tip!

thank you b&q and MNHQ
