This thread is for the members of the M&S Mumsnet panel who have been trying out M&S shapewear.

We've posted some feedback questions below to get you started but please feel free to add any other comments you have. Everyone who adds their feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win a £50 M&S giftcard.

Please remember to include details of which shapewear item(s) you bought with your £30 voucher in your response.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

Erm Halfling I bought the "waist cincher" which does what it says.

Delayed review because I wanted to go to a store that would have a decent selection. I prefer to buy in person. Without sounding odd I want to know what the material feels like.

Have not bought M&S Shapewear before although used to be a fan of the M&S 'the Knicker' if that counts?

There was more choice than I expected and certainly a greater range of colours. Saying that I bought the waist cincher in black and a pair of the cotton rich high leg light control in white.

I thought the waist cincher was expensive but I am impressed with the fit, silhouette it delivers and it is surprisingly comfortable. The cotton rich light control pack was good value at £9.50.

I didn't buy coloured shapewear because they all seemed to have completely lace backsides and that's not soft enough for a full day ! The cotton rich said there were matching items available so I asked a member of staff and although she tried to be helpful we couldn't quite work out which bras. (Perhaps place adjacent or give the bra a matching shapewear available sticker too?) Personally I don't buy nude colours as I always think puce.

I'm very pleased with the purchases so big thank you to M&S and MN. It probably will come up in conversation (bookclub veers all over the place Grin) and I will recommend especially on comfort.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

I already have an M&S body which I usually wear under dresses for a better shape. My local M&S is a huge, out of town, branch and carries the full range of shapewear. There were a lot of products available but hardly anything left in my size. Some of the pants I wanted to try were out of stock in my size.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

I shopped in store. I'm unlikely to buy underwear online as I like to see what the fabric looks/feels like and how much stretch there is.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

There certainly is a good choice of products. As I said above though, most things were out of stock in my size. The only colours I noticed were black & beige.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

The pants are decent value IMO. I paid £12 for a twin pack and £8 for a pair of trouser knickers. They look as though they will last a good while, which makes them reasonable value.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

I have only worn the pants so far. They do feel more supportive than normal ones. I would probably buy them again.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

I can't think of anything missing, in fact the shapewear range already includes items I didn't know existed! I only buy underwear from M&S so am unlikely to go elsewhere for this sort of thing.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I definitely would.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

I think I have bought some in the past - whether it was called Shapewear at that point I don't know. I bought online, and found the M&S site easy to navigate, as I always have previously.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

Bought online, wouldn't have normally, but time was short and I was going on holiday, so it was the only realistic option. I would prefer to buy instore so I could try on and see what it's like.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

Plenty of choice IMO, didn't have difficulty finding my size, and the sizes above and below were also available.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

It wasn't cheap - bought a body and it cost £39.50. However, you do get what you pay for in these sort of things - buying a £10 one from Primark just wouldn't work for me...

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

Very happy with it, it is comfortable and smooths out my lumps and bumps well.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

Don't think there's anything missing from the range. I would generally look to M&S for this sort of thing, but if for any reason I couldn't get what I needed from M&S, I would consider Debenhams, John Lewis, Bravissimo.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, definitely would.

Thanks!

Sorry for not posting before but have not found either the website or the stores particularly helpful. In fact, having just tried to buy online, given I don't have a pin number for the gift card I was unable to buy, so will have to try (for the 4th time) to see if any of the stores near me have something in stock that is in my size (and I am an 8-10 so not exactly an unusual size). And I live in central london right next to one of your flagship stores, and work near 2 other big stores so am not exactly near stores which shouldn't have good stock.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind? No - I wouldn't normally buy this type of product, but thought I would try seeing as after baby number 3 I now have definite tummy wobbliness despite regaining my pre pregnancy weight. Easy to see online, but so much of it that I didn't really know where to start. I did find what I had in mind, but in store, not in my size, and on line can't really tell if it is the type that doesn't give you VPL.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why? I prefer in store so I can see the product, to check knickers don't have that really annoying "seam along your crotch" that can be really painful.....also like to see if it is going to see if they are good for no VPL - clear on the actually product, but not clear on the online description.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not? Too much choice of styles which aren't really that different from each other to look at online, so it is obviously the quality of the material and finish etc which is the cost differential, and for that you need to see the product in store. Could not get what I wanted in my size in store, and the product selection in store was so small compared to online.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why? No idea as I have not been able to actually buy it yet. Can't get my size in store - please note that people who are in size 8-10 do still get wobbly bits post children. But I think they look pretty expensive for M&S for what they are.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by? No idea - not been able to buy yet.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from? I don't think I would buy any shapewear again if I evern manage to buy some from you - I only need a couple of pairs for occasional use. they are not going to be wardrobe staples.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not? No way it would ever come up in conversation.

I bought the following items with my voucher: lace shorts in pale pink ; small rose flower tights ; flatter me, high rise shorts (light aubergine); and waist sculpt cincher .
I used my voucher and also took advantage of the save £5 in spending over £30 and free postage offers online.
Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?
i have looked at the M&S shapewear before but was always put off by the higher price range compared to some other stores. I would only usually wear shapewear for special occasions (like my brother?s recent wedding) and therefore could not justify the expense for one day.
However, when I looked at the website to start researching the range I was pleasantly surprised to see the pretty, lacy shorts and patterned tights. I did also look at the vest, camisoles and body?s but was not surprised to see that they did not go up to my cup size (J) ? it would of been nice to have found something but finding pretty underwear in this size is very difficult in general.
I did like the M&S online guide to their shapewear range and found it useful to look through to find out what they did.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?
I initially looked at the range online, deciding what I liked before visiting my local store, which is a large store. However, I had already priced it up online and saw the fantastic offers they had - £5 off and free postage, that when I found a couple of my first choice items were not available instore on the day I visited, I returned home and took advantage of the offers.
However ? I did find it beneficial to visit the store to be able to see the colours ?in the flesh? and decide which option on cut and design I actually liked, even if I was not able to get the size in store on that day.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?
When I visited my local store I did not find the sizes in every item I was planning to buy, although they were available in different colours.

However, I was able to order every item on the website I wanted in the colour and size I wanted, no second choices were needed.
As previously stated, it would be nice to have a choice of the vests or bodies in sizes for ladies with larger cup sizes.

There were some nice colour choices rather than the usual white, cream/nude or black. However, it would be nice to see some ?sensual? colours- red, purple etc.
Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?
I think that the items were on the higher end of the price range ? I have bought some Shapewear knickers from a supermarket for £8 which worked for my brother?s wedding. These were very similar to the high waist ones in M&S priced at £18. The tights were also £4 more expensive ? however they were a very pretty design, which I have not seen elsewhere either.
However the lacy shorts I had were very pretty and I have not seen any others in a similar size elsewhere.
Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?
From the items I have tested I was very impressed with the light control, all over lace shorts, the bodyshaper tights and waist cincher.
However, the High Rise Lace Shaping Shorts I found were not very successful. The high waistband kept falling down, which left them uncomfortable to wear and unsuccessful in a sleek outline!
Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?
I think the waistband on the high rise shorts needs improving. The colour choice could be expanded to include some of the more in trend colours featured in the lingerie range in M&S stores.
Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would suggest it to friends if they were looking for shapewear ? however I would also be likely to suggest other places which are cheaper but just as effective.
In summary, I would say that the Marks and Spencers shapewear collection offers a great range in subdued colours, pretty lacy shorts in a range of styles but priced at the higher end of the market. People will often choose Marks and Spencer?s for their underwear and this range of Shapewear offers another choice to go under that special outfit!

Thanks bestlaidplans I obviously haven't looked properly.... Shall go and use my voucher straight away!!!!

smokinaces · 19/06/2012 21:16

Right, more feedback.

I don't like the firm control cotton pants.

The control is fine. The fit is fine. The waistband is not. It is cheap, badly choiced piece of elastic and makes the pants feel bad and look bad.

All other pairs are comfy and look streamlined under clothes. These make me look like I'm squeezing in pants two sizes too small (which I'm not, I'm a 10-12 and these are a 12)

I don't get why they chose this design. The light control cotton have a much better waistband.

Willemdefoeismine · 19/06/2012 22:22

Right, finally got my voucher on Saturday (thank you M&S) - could have so easily just fitted through the door ;-) and saved the loss/delay/hassle. Anyway, serious further shapewear research and buying has ensued since.

I spent some of my own money on the grape coloured Ultimate Magic Secret Support? Lace Shorts as they were in the M&S Sale last week and I wanted to ensure I bought them (as 1/2 price) whilst they were still available - just as well as there were certainly none left today when I went in. Also bought the Light Control Floral Lace Body in nude. I was not inspired to buy anything else from what is currently available.

Q1. Just remembered that I have an M&S shapewear swimsuit, bought last year or the year before, which is both figure flattering and makes me feel really good too.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

I did plenty of online window shopping, including watching the M&S shapewear video (helpful). The mantra "always wear your normal size - don't be tempted to go down a size as it will bunch up and look worse" advised by M&S and a shapewear-related article in The Daily Telegraph seemed like very sensible advice that I've adhered to.

I spent ages choosing the things I liked the look of to go with my posh frock but was slightly put off by some of the reviews. I was really more interested in the petticoat type shapewear or bodies rather than the more old-fashioned styles, but some negative reviews did influence my decision-making and I find it hard to ignore reviews which might suggest that an item wouldn't be a worthwhile spend!

Also passed some time (one before the voucher arrived and one for the purchasing of shapewear) lurking around our large M&S Lingerie Department. Found it really useful to be able to test elasticity/shaping qualities and the thickness of materials used in designs as the dress that I will be wearing my shapewear with has its own underskirt (albeit a very thin one) and I don't want to be swelteringly hot with too many layers on!

Did regret that I hadn't received my voucher earlier though because I felt obliged to buy something in-store today, given that this review is quite tardy. A lot of the slips that I had my eye on weren't available in my size and I needed to buy today as the event (and posh frock wearing opportunity) is looming.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

It makes sense to have items in basics colours but couldn't help but think that the whole shapewear area looked incredibly drab and colourless in comparison with the rest of the Department. Personally I think a lot women will choose to wear shapewear when they really want to wow in their clothes and I would have thought brides might be a target group. If so, you need to do more in cream/oyster/pearl type colours. Nude makes sense (although my DH considers it to be a granny colour and nothing will alter his viewpoint on this!) and black will always be more flattering, shapewear lingerie or no! But I think it is important that shapewear doesn't just make women feel better in clothes but makes them feel sexy too and I'm not sure much apart from the bodies currently fills that brief although some of the petticoats are nearly there.

I don't really see why the shapewear knickers can't be factored into other lingerie ranges along with other knicker types!

I found it somewhat odd that quite a lot of the shapewear doesn't seem to go beyond a D cup bra fitting; a tad strange since I think the bigger bosomed woman is more likely to be the one desirous of shaping structure in her undergarb!

Yes, more colour would definitely add to the shapewear range's appeal in general!

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

I would not have paid full-price (£19.50) for the knickers but then I am quite frugal. Also, I have 'previous' with M&S lacy lingerie and when putting these on I could already feel that the sculpting of the knickers and associated difficulty in hoiking then over my bottom might lead to a rip in the fabric sooner rather than later!

The body (£17.50) I felt was fairly good value for money and would buy it in black too as I feel that would flatter my skin tone more than the nude which I had to buy to go under a cream dress!

I am not quite sure that I feel the items in the range are special enough to warrant their pricetags - sorry!

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

I have a pudgy tummy these days and the knickers definitely did the trick in holding it in. But I have an hourglass shape and have smooth (shelf-free) hips/thighs and I found that the knickers seemed to cause shelves unnecessarily when wearing a tight-fitting dress. They felt very comfortable but I will obviously not be wearing them with a tight shape-enhancing dress if I am aiming to flatter my figure ;-)!

The body looks and feels fabulous under my dress and looks nice as underwear in its own right too so that's a winner and as I said I will get it in black too methinks!

I was a bit disappointed that nothing else grabbed me in the available range but then I am quite hard to please!

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

I think you need to liven up the range and maybe present it differently. I think the concept is brilliant but ultimately we women generally want to feel sexy in our undies as well as looking sexy when dressed up. I feel you need to have a rethink taking in some more boudoir-inspired waspies/corselettes (think Dita von Teese's take on underwear). I know that when I was doing my background research, I came across several articles reviewing shapewear products and some other brands seem to produce designs that tap into sexy and functional. A lot of the M&S designs do look scarily like the type of underwear worn by our grandmothers' generation and that is not necessarily appealing or relevant to women in the 21st Century!

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would not dissuade anyone from buying M&S shapewear but I think it depends if a friend/relative wants function over form or the reverse. I think if you add a bit of va-va voom to the available range in terms of embellishment/colours/styles I probably would though! I certainly did find that both the items I bought made me feel nicely 'held in' which at the end of the day is what the shapewear is designed to do!

Elspeth · 20/06/2012 01:12

I bought
3 Flatter-Me? High Rise Brazilian Light Shaping Knickers
1 Waist Sculpt? Firm Control Bonded Knickers

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?
I have never bought shapewear from M&S before but I have worn various other ?control? underwear from other brands. I thought the range was really good, and I was impressed that there was a selection of pretty items as well as the standard black and nude colours

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?
I looked online and in store. Sales assistant very helpful but full range only available online.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?
The store (Rugby High Street) had a decent selection and a good selection of sizes, although much of the shapewear range was not available.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?
the knickers were a good price. The control bonded knickers felt expensive

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?
I really liked the pants I bought, comfy and flattering. The control pants felt less comfy but held me in more i guess, swings and roundabouts!

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?
I had originally wanted one of the bodys as I thought they looked quite pretty ? but couldn't find any in store so settled on pants. I will definitely buy more pants!

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
Definitely! They suck my tummy in without being uncomfortable.

Tiddlymum · 20/06/2012 09:37

I bought the Secret Support Waist Cincher knickers at 19.50 and the Secret Support 'Wear your own Bra' slip dress. In total these came to £47.00 so I added some of my own money.I wear a lot of dresses ( fitted shift type) for work and for going out so thought this might be a good buy.

(Thanks very much for letting me take part by the way).

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

I have lots of M and S Shapewear -mostly knickers. My favourite are a pair I bought years ago and I am hanging onto, as the perfect length, comfy and flattering- sadly they don't seem to make these anymore.I was looking to try a brief that went above the waist for a change, as I have found recent purchases to sit exactly below where my little bulge is- so not very flattering.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

I looked online but purchased instore, a lot of the things I looked at online were out of stock in 12 and 14. I don't mind buying either way though I suppose actually I prefer to see and feel the underwear- so probably instore.I have no shame about trotting round with my big knicks in my basket! :)

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

There is plenty of choice, though I tend to stick ( not literally!) to knickers only. I am an odd size with a small back (30E) bra size but a 12/14 bottom ( heading towards a 12 thanks to Weight Watchers :) ) so I don't think I would be able to get a body type item to fit me- hence buying the wear your own bra slip.I have recently bought the wear your own bra bodyshaper but I found I was constantly hoiking it out of my bum- which isn't very elegant. Maybe a thong back wear your own body- but might be a bit too 'Ann Summers' for M and S!

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

The knickers at 19.50 are ok,though for everyday wear I tend to buy the light control 2 packs which are good value at £12.00. The slip was I suppose quite expensive but if I had liked it and got the wear out of it I would not have minded the cost.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

The knickers are fine, once you get them on and hoik them up.I bought the 12 which are still a bit small but hopefully will fit once I shift this half a stone (I WILL do it). They are fairly comfy for a high waisted pair of knickers, I have previously purchased SP which were horrendously uncomfortable and very expensive. I oce had to whip them off in a train toilet because they were crippling me- nice!

The slip was a bit of a disappointment. Its quite short and I think would ride up further.I also found it hard to get on.To be fair though I think if I can't get away with a dress with just control knickers only- then I probably shouldn't wear the dress. I don't think its the sort of thing I could sit at my desk in, or go out for a meal in. Maybe as a very occasional wear item, but I don't think its for me.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

Some light control knickers which come a little higher.I bought a nude and black two pack last year which were the perfect size. The current two pack feel lovely but a just an inch or two shorter than I woud like at the waist.

If M and S would like me to send them the codes for my all time favourites I can do so.

I think they should make more colours in the light control ranges. Some of just just want a nice smooth line and not rigid support, especially for everyday work wear ,so more of this please?

I have previously purchased from John Lewis (both the dreaded S Pants previously referred to and their own brand). The own brand were fine, I would say similar to M and S really.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, it does the job, washes well and lasts. All it needs to do really!

StillSquiffy · 20/06/2012 10:02

I've been using support stuff for the last 8 years, since getting diastasis recti which I haven't been able to reverse. So I know my stuff when it comes to shapewear! I buy from figleaves and from M&S

This time I decided to go for something different, given that I'd got a voucher, and I bought a "waist sculpt wear your own bra slip" and a tummy control waist slip. Came to around £50 in total but I didn't mind adding my own money.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?
Yes I've bought before. Usually the thigh slimmers, but I stopped buying them when M&S stopped reinforcing the edges - they now ride up and become quite painful to wear
Easy to find the stuff. found a lot of new stuff too

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?
Looked online but very low choice of sizes so bought in shop

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?
Stock availability very good instore (Canterbury). found quite a bit of new stuff, some of which I plan to buy in future

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?
Waist slip NOT good value for money (I see it's now on sale at 30% off since I bought it)
Wear-your-own-bra-slip WAS good value for money

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?
Wear your own bra slip - absolutely love it. Because of my diastasis recti, I have a lot to push back in, and normally end up with an unsightly roll at the waist, I have also found it quite painful to wear shapewear all day because it pinches so much at the edges. This slip gets round all of that, really does provide firm control and - according to my husband - is rather kinky. What I liked in particular was that I could wear it with a low cut ball gown. The one think I didn't like was the lace at the back, which showed when I was wearing a couple of my dresses (and the ball gown)
The Waist slip, on the other hand, was rubbish. I could feel the elastic snapping as I put in on. It wasn't the wrong size, just poor quality. I still have the label on it and will take it back

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?
more (good quality) slips please. Pants are great, but pinch. slips are much easier to wear. I still buy from figleaves, but if range of slips improves I can seem myself sticking with M&S

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes. But only some of the items. Saying that I will rave about the WYOB slip as it is fab

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

I've bought something from The House of Fraser before but not M&S. I perused the website first before heading instore. While the website had a good enough search, it's very, very difficult to assess shapewear when the only image you have is of an extremely young and skinny model.

I appear to suffer from a condition known as "invisibility to shop staff". It's not just M&S to be fair, but despite multiple attempts to get some attention I failed every time. I went to both the flagship Marble Arch store on a weekday morning when it was fairly quiet and to the Westfield Stratford shop on a weekend. the best I managed to get in way of advice was "That item is out of stock and won't be replaced". I found it, however, at the second shop I tried.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

I looked online first then went to buy in person. I'm glad I did because a) items were out of stock online but available in one of the stores and b) with underwear I like to feel first what I'm going to put next to my skin. I'm sensitive to latex and some of the items had a distinct rubbery feel in bits.

It would have been nice to discuss this with a member of staff but they were elusive at best and dismissive. This resulted in a poor decision with one of my items.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

There was limited stock in my size (18) I had to go to a second shop to find the item I really wanted (the light control daisy thigh slimmer) It had been recommended previously on Mumsnet for the inner thigh chafe problem. They work exactly as I wished but they were out of stock both online and in the big shop I originally visited. The server said they were being discontinued. Please don't. I'd buy more if I could track them down.

As a larger lady, my choices were restricted to a nasty beige (in what planet is that skin tone?) or white. there were a few items that were a nice lilac, but anything more colourful was only available in the smaller sizes.

I'm a 34GG. This means all of the bodies were unaccessible to me. There's a large customer base you are simply not catering for.

So basically, more sizes, more colours and a bit of razzamatazz for the curvaceous customer please. Just because we are not taut and trim does not mean we have to be dressed like grannies.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

The light control knickers are great and at £9 not off the scale in terms of price. I would pay again for the thigh slimmers if I could find them again even though I think they are a bit overpriced simply because they did the job.

However £20 for a pair of magic knickers is extortionate, especially as they spectacularly failed at their job.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

Loved the light control knickers. I'm wearing them now and will buy more.

The magic knickers were a disaster. I bought them because I felt I couldn't try them on first. This was a major mistake. As soon as they went on they rolled down leaving me with an unsightly roll of cloth at my waist that completely defeated the object of wearing them.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

A little more consistency. I tried on two bodies (neither of them went over my norks comfortably) In one the size 18 was impossible to get on. There wasn't a 20 so I couldn't see if a larger size would have worked. In the other I fitted happily into the 12-14.

Items for the larger breasted woman.

Better colours and more of them. The 'nude' colour is just nasty and unlike any skin tone I've ever seen. This is the 21st Century, these things shouldn't have to be constantly spelled out.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

The light control knickers and the light control thigh slimmers definitely. I'd advise anyone to step away from the magic knickers range.

I have bought shapewear from M&S before but not for a long time. When I got included on the trial, I first looked online. I had an idea of what I wanted and went looking. I found that what I wanted was available but not in my size. After a lot of dieting, I am now back down to my pre-pregnancy weight but while, I've slimmed down almost everywhere else, I'm still left with a lot of stretched skin and sloppy muscles around my tummy area that I wanted to pull in and disguise. I found that I could get knickers in the size I needed but not the bodysuit type underwear that I really wanted as the smallest back size for the bra part was a 32 and I am only a 28.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

I looked online and even put a few things in the basket but ended up buying my shapewear in store as I wanted to feel the fabrics. I'm glad I did my research before I went in though as the shop assistants were virtually none existent in both branches of M&S I tried and I found it impossible to find anyone to help me. I wanted to go instore because with knickers, I like them to come all the way up to my bra line if they're the higher type as I find the ones that cling around the ribs incredibly uncomfortable. There's no real way of telling how hight they'll come when online.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

There's loads of choice online but I found the shops much more limited, especially when it came to colours. The dress I wanted to wear the underwear with is black and I wanted black underwear. I found tonnes of nude and white but the choice in black was very limited. Anything in a size 10 seemed to be low on stock too. I ended up buying not what I went in for but whatever fitted as I'd left it late and was in too much of a hurry for online ordering. I couldn't find the size I was looking for in the garment I really wanted though as it doesn't exist!

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

The things I bought are all good quality and should last but I will admit to balking at the prices when I first looked. It would put me off buying some more as I wear shapewear every single day and it would be very expensive to buy enough.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

I bought - Flatter-Me? High Rise Brazilian Light Shaping Knickers and Firm Control Cotton Rich Lace Panel High Rise Knickers for everyday wear and Gorgeous Waist Sculpt? Firm Control Floral Lace Knickers for my party dress. I really liked the 2nd 2 items as they provide a good level of control and are comfortable to wear. The 'Flatter me' knickers definitely don't flatter me though and feel very awkward to wear. I don't think they do anything to smooth out my tummy either. DH likes them but I wouldn't wear them everyday.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

There needs to be some smaller back sizes in the body suits. I understand that at a 28F I am an unusual size but there was nothing that even came close to what I needed. I'd probably try Bravissimo for my shapewear in the future as they cater for my size.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Probably. The items I bought are comfortable and seem to be washing well so far which is what I'd expect after spending so much (I went over my £35 budget!) and I think there is a lack of alternatives on the highstreet.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

ANSWER: I didn't find it hard at all - it's all available online - I bought a very early version of this product in 1999 after the birth of my 3rd child - I had to go to a wedding and I had a beautiful Jigsaw skirt - but my pot belly was not so beautiful - I managed to hold it all in with some tight lycra style high-waisted Bridget Jones style pants - success!

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

ANSWER: I bought my product online - but it's easy to find these products in store....I like trying these things on in my own home...in my own mirror and then trying a selection of my own clothes over the top....

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

ANSWER: Yes plenty of variations of the same theme - really good choice...size 10 seems popular and had sold out in quite a few of the styles...

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

ANSWER: I do think they are pricey but that's because they do such an important job - so worth every penny!

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

ANSWER: very impressed with the contouring and hugely relieved that it doesn't feel like a straight jacket!

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

ANSWER: It might be nice to look at creating a midriff upwards type item - although I guess the obvious problem is that it could create a bulky lumpy below the bottom edge with skin pinching etc - otherwise very impressive range

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

ANSWER: Absolutely - and particularly good if you've had a baby, got a bit of pot belly tummy from having kids or simply want to look more svelte....

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

jesscontos · 20/06/2012 16:18

By the way - the original version I bought in 1996 was also an M&S product - I talk to my friends and there is no where better than M&S for a good selection of undies...unbeatable good value for money British Brand - I'm flying the flag!

Helibore · 20/06/2012 16:27

Q1.No I hadn't bought any before but found the online info, (a pretty slim model to demonstrate??!!!) informative. I knew I wanted to try out a body type - top to bottom flattening required. Tried my TWO local stores where I was told if not there then do not have any, but could order in. I bought online, so I did not have to go out again to the stores. The outlet store did try to be helpful...and there was a little more, but still limited choice. Neither store had ANY 38DD however.
Q2.I didn't have a choice because of lack of store items. I had to buy online. I would have preferred to try items on first and check colours and fabrics.
Q3. I always have a problem with 38DD. Usually there is never enough stock at any of my local stores, unless rather "sedate". It would be good to have some more interesting colour ranges for shapewear.
Q4.I bought a full control minimiser which had wider bra straps (needed following shoulder operation) and a pack of light control lace knickers. The £25 minimiser I felt was pretty good value and the £9.50 for 2 briefs excellent value. I made use of the £5 off voucher which covered the post and packing.
Q5. The minimiser was good to wear for a day but the bust was a little small and carried on the flattening theme - not good :( Better bra shape/support needed. Styling was good and a bit different too. The cotton briefs I think are fab and the lace bit allows extra comfy movement. Will probably buy some more. :) Colours are limited though. Both are good quality with regards fabric and stitching.
Q6. Good start. Better sculpting/support for larger bust sizes in bodies please is a must. More interesting colours needed such as midnight blue, even red for a bit of zap. The nude is pretty yuck! Having only bought Sloggis before, I would definitely return for the M&S briefs. The bra bit would have to be sorted in the body before I bought that again.
Q7. If it cropped up in conversation I would certainly mention that the briefs are fab and do the job and for the body good but comment as above.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

I have bought shapewear before from M & S, I bought magic knickers and a full body slip to go under an evening dress. I looked online and the descriptions were good and I did find what I wanted, with my voucher I bought some "Ultimate Magic Secret Support? Body Define High Rise Knickers" and a "Light Control Floral Lace Body"

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

I shopped online and collected the order in store, I found it easier to look online as it was easier to narrow the choices and see what colours and sizes there were, my local store is one of the biggest in the country and it is sometimes overwhelming to have to look through every style and check sizes etc. Also nice to try it on the privacy of your own home and take your time. I was glad to be able to go and collect in person as it meant I didn't need to wait in for the delivery and could pick a time that fitted around work. I did think the service at the collection desk was quite slow, there were several members of staff standing around whilst one person dealt with customers, another member of staff said "I'll be right with you" then disappeared and didn't return.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

One style I looked at was out of stock, but on the whole the choice was good and most things were available

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

Yes both items well made, the floral lace body is great on the tummy, but comfortable and looks nicer than most control underwear, I wouldn't mind my partner seeing me in that, it wouldn't cause a "Bridget Jones" moment, I would have expected to pay more.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

I was very impressed by the control the items offered whilst being comfortable and not making you feel restricted. The only thing I could fault on either item was the straps on the body coming up a little tight on me, as I have a long body and there was only just enough adjustment on them. I particularly liked the smooth line across the bottom on the knickers.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

I was happy with the range and cannot think of anything I require that I couldn't get, perhaps a slightly wider choice of colours. I would probably buy from Evans or John Lewis if buying elsewhere

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

I have already recommended the lace body to a friend who often has some abdominal pain and needs a little support. It is light and comfortable and definitely gives a less wobbly appearance!

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

Q1. I have bought shapewear before. It was really easy to see all the products online and to work out what I wanted. I found what I wanted easily

Q2. I shopped online. I prefer shopping online as I have children and work.... it saves my boys following me around and laughing at the underwear!

Q3. There was lots of choice, although the colours are a but limited.... but then I would only really buy black or white! There was a fair few things out of stock.

Q4. Yes, the were very good value for money.

Q5. I bought knickers. They are great. Really supportive and dead comfy. And they look nice. I am planning to buy more!

Q6. I've bought shapewear from Next, the quality isn't as good.

Q7. I would recommend it, but can't imagine discussing it!

areyoutheregoditsmemargaret · 20/06/2012 18:00

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

Yes, I have a shapewear slip and a couple of pairs of knickers tactfully given to me by my Mum after childbirth. This time I didn't find what I had in mind which was shapewear T shirts, which I believe you were doing until recently. I also wanted a beige skirt slip but it wasn't available in my size.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

Both - instore at Ken High St and M&S. Prefer online but I found the website overwhelming and decided I want to see for myself.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

Choice is generally good but where are the T shirts? I couldn't get the skirt slip in beige so bought in white instead, I also bought a torso shaper (can't remember it's real name) and shaper tights. In both cases, they weren't available in a size 10 - my size so had to go for a 12. I may return them, as i've yet to try them. As often with m&s, the smaller sizes seem thin on the ground and it was frustrating hunting them down. I know shapewear is obviously for larger women often but we skinnies still have bits we want covered up.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

Reasonably good value,

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

One lot of tights from pack of 2 laddered on 1st wear - disappointing. Otherwise tights were lovely, good support but not too much. The other items I've yet to wear - sorry, the weather has let me down but judging by the slip I already own they will do a good job.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

Stock more smaller sizes, include items like T shirts as before. I would probably go back to M&S, as generally quality is good for price range - in the past I've bought yummie tummie and it's a rip off. The shopping experience, as always in Marble Arch, was hell - too much stock, too little help on shop floor, and as usual I came away vowing never again. Kensington far more relaxing, though still with lack of correct sizes.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I would (but would feel v rude!)

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

I have bought shapewear before, I bought a slip for under a black dress and it was great, gave a really smooth silhouette so I was excited to get som more. I did my shopping on-line so it was really easy to search for shapewear and sift through the products like that. I did find what I had in mind but had a problem with sizes being out of stock.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

Online, as above I felt it was easier to locate the sizes and saves all the rifling!

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

There was definitely a good variety of styles and colours but I found a lot of the items I was interested in the stock was really low and on a good few items out of stock in the size / colour I would have chosen.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

I do think they were good value for money, I bought 3 items (a control vest and 2 pairs of control briefs) for my £35 and they are all good quality. Particularly the vest which was a real bargain and lovely to wear.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

I am really impressed with the control vest with secret support, I felt this was a great item for a good price as it has a bra concealed yet is no more expensive than a lot of bras, gives good control and was a lovely bright pink, ideal for summer. I wasn't so impressed with either of the briefs though I fear the problem lies more with me than the briefs, obviously the flab has to go somewhere and when I'm in the briefs I feel it just makes any excess splodge over the top, in an attractive muffin fashion. That said the briefs are the right size for me and to go up a size would only lose the control aspect of them so I'm not sure what the answer is.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

Possibly some shapewear t-shirt tops, with arm control for bingo wings. I would possibly try Debenhams just to try a bigger variety (spanx, etc)

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I definitely would

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?
I have bought shape wear from other retailers before, not M&S. I shopped initially in the store without investigating things which was a mistake. There was more available (I later discovered) than I found in store.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?
Both - but I liked the internet better - I like being able to read reviews and I hadn't realised the whole range that was available from shopping in the store as the swimwear was in a different section. I do like to see things in the flesh (as it were) which is why I did a bit of both.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?
I was a bit overwhelmed by the choice, there seemed to be an unnecessary number of different knickers, for example. The stock availability was very good where I shopped. There wasn't anyone to help me in the shop though. I bought the Santoni body but I would really have preferred one of the ones with a strappy bra top, however they don't come smaller than a 34 inch back which is too big for me. (This is a problem I've had in the past with M&S maternity and nursing bras and is a real shame). I would have liked more colours in the body too.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why? Initially I bought some firm control knickers for £19.50, and the Santoni body. The knickers were overpriced I think and didn't look good (see below) so I took them back and changed them for a 2 pack of light control pants which were very good value.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?
The firm control pants I initially bought looked awful. I thought it was probably a mistake to get pants that didn't go all the way up to my bra because I was worried about the tightness around the top. I bought a size 10 and decided that they must work on some people and as I'm really a size 8 (though admittedly not at all toned thanks to my 3 children, the youngest of which is only 6 months) I thought it was worth a go. WRONG. I could never, ever have worn them and I took them back. I really liked the Santoni body though I got the flesh coloured one and it was a bit odd to look at over jeans - I looked like someone with no tummy button, I think a coloured one would have been better. The light control pants were better, though I don't know if they really helped me look any thinner. The second time I wore them they rolled down though and to get them to cover the bit between the top of my trousers and my tummy button I had to pull them quite high up and then the top of the leg appeared over the top of the jeans. A lovely look!

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?
I think the swim suit range is not that great. I would have liked to buy a swimming costume but I didn't really like the style of any of them. I think the M&S range is good and I'd try it again. I've bought Spanxx in the past which i wasn't happy with and were much more expensive. I would try the tesco range - I've worn their swimsuits and they are good.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, definitely. (But I'd still like to see someone who needs shape wear who can wear firm control tummy button level knickers).

CoolBananas · 20/06/2012 22:00

I bought 2 pairs of the Secret Support High Leg knickers, one Firm and one Ultimate.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? No. When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? I took a look on the website first and it was easy enough to see what was available. Did you find what you had in mind? Yes.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? I had a look online first and then purchased my items from in store. Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why? I preferred taking a look at the items in store to get a real sense of what they were like.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? Seems to be. How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Seemed okay, the shop assistant advised me that more items were available in the larger stores, e.g. the full body items. Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not? Yes, although my choices were limited to the styles available in the smaller store.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why? I didn?t think they were good value at first, and I wouldn?t have bought them at that price using my own money, however having now tried the Firm knickers I may reconsider my opinion on that.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by? I?ve just tried the Firm knickers so far and was very satisfied with this item. They were comfortable, and did what they advertised in pulling in my tummy. I was particularly impressed that my work colleague noticed a difference! I was disappointed by the price beforehand, in that I couldn?t buy more items for the voucher value, but as I said above, having now worn the knickers I think they may be worth the money.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from? Nothing I can think of to improve or add to the range. I would only go to M&S or maybe a specialist underwear shop e.g. Bravissimo if they started doing something similar.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not? The day I wore my shapewear knickers to work I commented all day long to my colleagues on how the knickers were pulling in my tummy and that I could feel it everytime I got up. It was a key topic of conversation that day and I?ve already recommended them, and am likely to recommend them to anyone else if this subject did come up in conversation.

When I found out I?d been selected to test the shapewear items I was disappointed as I thought the range looked boring and frumpy. However having now tried them I?ve been impressed by the results and am pleased to have 2 items at hand now to work magic on my figure when I need. Thank you M&S and Mumsnet!

  1. I have bought shapewear from M&S before, a pair of thigh shaper shorts with a lacy print, a good few years (and stones) ago and I remember quite liking them but I didn't wear them until they fell apart like I did another well known brand even though they weren't as pretty. I guess I was looking for something similar to that but was suprised at the range when I searched the site. The video was pointless for many reasons but it didn't use a bigger lady so the 'before & after' didn't have much impact at all, it also wasn't clear what she was wearing. The selection online is varied and the pictures are good.

  2. I shopped online first but the stock issue meant I had to go in store. It's much easier to shop in store (providing they have stock) because you can touch and feel the fabric & stretch of the garments, for example you might think you want 'light' support online but when you feel the tension in the fabric you may change your mind. You can also ask an assistant for advice although you have to find a good one. On the other hand, it's very clear what is available online, you can quickly swap sizes or colour without sifting through the racks and it will tell you about matching items also.

  3. I found that when I asked about the garment I wanted; The Firm Control Anti-Cellulite Waist & Thigh Cincher, black, size 18, I was fobbed off & told the only product that actually exists is the Ultimate Magic Body Define Waist & Thigh Cincher - obviously not true - but it wasn't in stock online either so I bought the Body define. I was going to try a full slip with the option of wearing my own bra but there was only one option (in store) and it was out of stock in my size.

  4. Shapewear is expensive. It's worth it though, because the right garment can do wonderful things for your figure, posture and confidence.

  5. I returned the Ultimate Magic Body Define Waist & Thigh Cincher. I was excited to try the high waist because I had a tummy tuck 5 months ago and although my tummy is flat (ish) my midriff now seems to protrude slightly. It was easy enough to get on but once pulled up it gave me the worst back fat I have ever seen. Ever. On anyone. It was like I was wearing a bolero made of fat. The problems are that it has a band of sticky plastic inside that digs into your flesh and it doesn't come up high enough. It then rolled down, leaving a very tight roll of super enforced shapewear lodged around my middle. Painful and difficult to remove. The bottom half of the garment was ok, comfy even, but that may have been in comparison. I exchanged it for Waist Sculpt? Firm Control Cincher which also rolls down but I will wear it when I have a scar revision (with lipo) operation at the end of the year as a compression garment. I also bought Merino Wool Blend 100 Denier Bodyshaper Tights which are expensive for one pair of tights but are LOVELY.
I love everything about them. I'm a leggings fan so 100 denier tights are perfect for me and the support is brilliant around my scar.

  6. I think the fabric used in M&S shapewear lets it down. It's too much. And waistbands are no good, there needs to be full, consistent support not a tighter section exactly where a problem area can arise. Hosiery
material is definitely a better way to go.

  7. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend M&S shapewear to a friend who is bigger. I'm sure it works fine as a smoother for slimmer women who just want a sculpted outline under a tight fitting dress. For women with fat they want to control I would recommend they opt for an entirely different design and thick, hosiery material like Spanx.

I wore my secret support vest (34g) to a party on saturday night.
It coped with all my drunken dancing and many many falling overs. I am impressed.
