This thread is for the members of the M&S Mumsnet panel who have been trying out M&S shapewear.

We've posted some feedback questions below to get you started but please feel free to add any other comments you have. Everyone who adds their feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win a £50 M&S giftcard.

Please remember to include details of which shapewear item(s) you bought with your £30 voucher in your response.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?
No I hadn't bought any before. The range seemed extensive - although some of it reminded me very much of the panty-girdles that my mother had back in the 60s. I looked at the stuff online & it was pretty straight forward to navigate.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?
Online. Don't really have time to go shopping

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?
There was a lot of choice for shape, little in terms of colour. A lot of teh stuff that I chose initially was out of stock in anything except the smallest and largest sizes so nothing much in 12-14-16

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?
The item I bought was £35 (Ultimate Magic Body Define Waist & Thigh Cincher) & at that price, I would only have one - cheaper and I might have bought more.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?
It definitely smoothed the line of the dress I was wearing over the top but didn't make me look any slimmer. Maybe I should have had a size smaller. The top rolled over slightly.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?
More colours and better stock availability. Not sure where else I would go (but if in doubt, John Lewis is my first port of call).

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
Can't really imagine it coming up in conversation, but if someone were to ask where they could get some, I would suggest they at least looked at teh M&S range

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

  • Not bought before
  • easy to find garments on website as all under "shapewear" category.
  • I did find what I had in mind, was looking for waist cinchers, though there was only 1 style. Far too many knickers!

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

  • online. I enjoy browsing in stores, but it's hard to find time without kids to do so hence why I bought a selection online to try.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

  • seems to be a good range of sizes (I'm a fairly average middling size but had a quick look and there seemed to be a reasonable range)
  • colours are pretty dull. I know that beige is sensible, but it looks very "surgical". Would pastel pink work as well as a "nude" colour? Would like more waist cinchers (or even corsets!) in pretty fabrics so that you don't have to hide in the bathroom to get undressed :)
  • couldn't get the waist sculpt pants T326097 in my size (14). Still out of stock.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

  • reasonable-ish if they work! Seems very expensive for knickers. I tried various items and have comments below.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

  • I loved the Waist Sculpt fabric of the Waist Cincher T326006. I measured before and after, and reckon it does take an inch off my flabby waist. BUT it could do with being an inch to an inch-and-a-half longer, as I had to choose either to hoik it up to just under my bra, which meant a hideous splurge or fat roll between the lower edge and my knickers, or to pull it to where I would wear it ie just along the top of my hip bones/knicker line (below the bulge!) which meant it stopped over an inch below the bra thus giving me a fat roll between bra strap and Shapewear - bleurgh!
  • Returned the Waist Sculpt body as it was too short in the body (honest, I don't think I'm an unusually long-bodied person!) and my boobs were a couple of inches above the underwires of the cups!!
  • Didn't like the Panelled selvedge waist cincher knickers T326772 - felt like they made no difference, tape measure showed no change (unlike the Waist Scuplt fabric). Fine as a "free" pair of knickers with the voucher but would have been disappointed if I'd bought them myself!

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

  • Prettier fabrics, less "surgical" or "old lady" looking. Would be interested in some sexy corsetry too - I do have a corset from Corsets UK which was surprisingly cheap and incredibly effective at creating a waist (though tricky to find clothes to wear over it so I think I'm looking for the impossible - something that squeezes me in like a corset that can't be seen under clothing!)
  • I would look at lingerie specialists such as figleaves.com for shapewear, possibly being swayed by popular brands such as Spanx, or retro sites like What Katy Did (I have one of their deep suspender belts which is fab)
  • If M&S do more in the Waist Sculpt fabric I would try again.
  • Bizarrely, although the fabric of this is pretty old fashioned and makes me think of my late nan, if the same product were made in prettier fabric (retro 50's pink/peach, or black, or patterned) and perhaps a little firmer control, I would consider buying it.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

  • Possibly. Not a total convert, but would suggest trying the Waist Sculpt as it seems effective if you have the right torso length.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

Never bought any before as I always feared they would be uncomfortable. I started looking online before the voucher arrived. It was easier than looking in the shops and had a good range. Didn't have anything clear in mind, just something that would tame my wobbly tummy.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

Looked online initially, but bought in store. Preferred actually buying in store so that I could try them on and see exactly what the colours and fabrics were like, but the online feedback was useful.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

Choice of styles seems good, but would prefer a wider range of colours. 'Nude' for instance, is no good if you have a darker skin tone. Size availability wasn't good online and worse in store, in the larger bra sizes for bodies. I wasn't able to try on all the bodies I wanted as my bra size wasn't available.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

I bought the Ultimate Magic Body Define Waste Cincher in black (£29.50). I thought it was quite expensive really, but would have been happy to pay that much if it held my tummy in - whch it did, but not enough!

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

Feel a bit neutral. It feels comfortable on, the fabric is nice, and there are no bulges above or below. But I wonder if the top will roll down with wear and though it smooths out the lumps and bumps a bit, it doesn't trim the waist and tummy significantly.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

More colours please, and darker brown for a 'nude' for those of us with asian/black skin tones. Navy or royal blue would be nice, or burgundy. As I never normally buy shapewear, can't think of any other retailers - perhaps, if money were no object, Rigby & Peller!

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I'd recommend it if they only needed moderate control - but not if they had a large bust or tummy.

Final comment, the staff in the shop were very friendly and helpful, were happy to let me try on several garments in different sizes.

And a word about the bodies - I found it impossible to do up the bra clasp at the back, and I consider myself reasonably supple! Would need to get my partner to help - so not much use for a hot date!

veryconfusedatthemoment · 17/06/2012 14:24

I bought (1) Waist Clinching Tummy Control Slip (£27-50) T32/07434/6028 and (2) Shapewear high leg undies 2 pack (£9-50) t32/00467/6849

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind? No I hadn't but was interested due to wobbly baby belly and other wobbly bits. I had to shop instore for this rather than online, so hadnt seen the full range available. I wish I had researched on line first. I did expect a large shop to have a more complete range. Also the names for items in the range varied so some are secret slimming; others are shapewear. I have now looked on line and the tummy control slip seems to be old stock?

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why? I shopped in store (large town store). To see the full range on line would have been much easier. I normally do prefer to see things like underwear in reality but am finding that M&S range in size 10 is sometimes very difficult to get full range in store. (I use Bluewater and London stores)

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not? Ok, I was disappointed - I bought at a decent size store (Tun Wells) and the range of shapewear for size 10 was so limited. So I ended up choosing items that were perhaps not quite right to be able tio complete the test. So eg tummy control slip - I wanted nude not black so chose a size 12 - so glad I did, as it is snug anyway. Re: colours - far too much black and the double packs are mostly black and one other colour. Some of the underwear is in sizes 8-10, 12-14. I am a good standard size 10 - not an 8, not a 12 so I just want a size 10. I do feel the combined sizes dont't work.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why? I feel the slip I will only wear under a dress for special occasions so it makes it not good vfm. The underwear I will wear more regularly. Quite pricey tho when I can buy pretty undies for the same!

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by? The tummy control slip gives my wobbly tummy as defined shape so possibly I look pregnant (rather than wobbly!) Confused. The front is quite high so under wrap-over dresses it shows (and also on 1 v neck back dress, so couldnt wear it under that dress). The items are comfortable.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from? No other retailers. I would like less black, more other pale colours. Simple shapes - some of what was available on line looked as if it were designed for dates, rather than everyday.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not? I think it would depend why the other person wanted shapewear. I would say there was a range, perhaps to look on line first and leave it there.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

I have bought an all in one before, but wear very rarely as quite uncomfortable, wanted to see if the everyday stuff was more comfy. The search online was ok but the first search i did didn't bring up all the options. I also went to the store to look and feel how supportive the garments were. I did find what i wanted. I bout a double pack of knickers, a single pair of knickers and a vest top.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

I shopped online and in store, in store i was able to see the strength of the shape ware as i know it comes in different resistances. In store was better to get a feel and to see if it would support where i wanted it to.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

Would have liked more colour choices and more modern styles, was all quite old feeling. Not may sizes in the vests available in store

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

I am please with all the items i bought. They are comfortable for everyday

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

I like the items they are not too tight to wear everyday like some items but hold me in. The vest is very difficult to get on and off, a zip would be helpful.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

Would probably on buy from M and S, john lewis or Debenhams for shapewear. Needs some more modern feeling pieces some feels like it is for old people. More colour choices

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Would recommend to a friend lots to choose from for daily and occasional wear. more choice than other shops

Claudiecat · 17/06/2012 18:22

I bought Firm Control Panelled Selvedge Waist Cincher and Tummy Control Satin Trim vest.
Q1 - Yes I have bought shape wear knickers before from M&S which have been disappointing so I wondered of their range had actually improved. Shopped at two different stores. The large store in Birmingham had a fantastic choice. I was able to buy exactly what I wanted.
Q2 - I preferred to shop in store as I can see exactly what I'm buying. The quality of the fabric and also the sizing which was important as I found the sizing did vary quite a lot from product to product.
Q3 - There was a good choice and I felt most people's requirements would be catered for.
Q4 - I thought some of the items were quite pricey for what they were. Some products were quite similar to shape wear available in Primark for a third of the price. The vest tops were good value though. I thought the knickers were too expensive and not something I would normally spend.
Q5 - I was quite satisfied with the vest. It was comfortable to wear. However there were a few niggles with it. The sizing was way off. I bought a similar control vest top before Christmas in M&S which was size 10 so I automatically picked another 10 to try. Too small. I tried on a 12 and nearly dislocated my shoulders trying to get it off again! Eventually I bought a 14 which seems ok but I'm quite small on top so sizing seems a bit off! Also the adjustable straps seemed a little cheap and flimsy but at that price not sure if I'd expect better. Overall I am quite happy with this purchase. Sadly, the same cant be said of the waist Cincher knickers. I bought a 12 although I'm usually a 10 in pants. I wanted to avoid the roll down situation I've had with previous pants. I felt they didn't do much to actually cinch my waist and there were ripping sounds as I tried to put them on. Don't think they'll last very long so I was glad I actually hadn't paid out money on them. They seemed quite cheaply made and the support just wasn't there.
Q6 - I would perhaps improve the colour range. It would be great if they made the vest in a nude colour but other colours too. They definitely need to get the sizing right. The store assistants advised correctly on fit. They knew the vest came up very small on size hence why it was suggested I try a 14.
Q7 - Yes. Told all my friends about the vest but also told them to avoid the knickers. I think Debenhams have better products for roughly the same price. If price is an issue I would go back and have another look in Primark as some of their shape wear is comparable for a fraction of the price!
Thank you for the opportunity to take part in the survey!

cocolepew · 17/06/2012 19:24

Q1. I haven't bought any shapewear from M&S before. I had a quick look online. I knew I only wanted knickers and saw a good choice online. I bought short knickers, lacy top ones and the light support everyday ones (sorry cant link on phone). It came to £36 all together.

Q2. I shopped in store only. I wanted to be able to check the size and thickness and the level of support/resistence of material.

Q3. I was happy with the choice. More colours might have been nice but I tend to only wear black or white knickers. There was enough knickers to pick from but I noticed there wasnt a great deal of other stock.

Q4. The items I bought were excellent value for money especially the 2 pairs for £9.50.

Q5. I was very pleased with the items I dont like things too tight but wanted a small amount of support due to gynae problems (sorry if TMI). The knickers covered my bum good and gave a lovely smooth line under trousers with no VPL.

Q6. The only thing is maybe more colours. I wouldn't go anywhere else to be honest.

Q7. I would and have told friends about the range. I know a couple have bought the light control knickers and have been happy with them.

Thanks for the free pants Smile.

ohnoherewego · 17/06/2012 20:11
  1. I bought shapewear from M and S years ago and am still wearing the body I bought then. I just looked in store for another body to replace it. I did find bodies in store

2 I shopped in store only. At the time I thought the range looked good but I didn't see half the items mentioned here. I shopped i store as I wanted to try on but internet research may have helped in advance.

3.As above not all the ranged were in store.

  1. I thought the bodies were expensive at £39.50 and didn't buy one. I bought a waist sculpt cincher at £16 and my go and buy another.

5 The waist sculpt and pants were good value but I wouldn't pay £40 nearly for a body.

6 I'm quite impressed with the waist sculpt as I don't feel as trussed up as I do in a body and it will be more comfy in the heat. I did have a malfunction when it started to roll up but I think it may be because I didn't have it in right place.

7 I think it would be good to have a wider range of colours. I would look at BHS if buying again as well as M&S.

  1. I would recommend the waist sculpt to anyone else who tends tofeel the heat!
Funsponge · 17/06/2012 20:49

I bought this waist clincher £19.50
and I can't find them on the website - 2 pack light control high leg pants (no VPL)

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

I haven't bought M&S shapewear before (but have bought other brands). I looked on-line to see what was available and prices then went to a store. Website has good photos and descriptions which gave me an idea of what was available but I wanted to try on so went to the store to choose.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

Looked on-line fiirst then to a store. I prefer to do it 'in person' in a store as I like to try stuff on to get a good fit.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

There was a decent choice of styles and colours but not all colours in all sizes (although the shop lady did offer to order in different sizes and colours). I got what I wanted in the colours I wanted.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

The waist clincher is good value - it's nice quality and will last well (although I'll probably only wear it three times a year). The light control pants, (2 for £9 ish) are really nice for everyday wear and good value.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

The waist clincher feels nice on, holds in my wobbly bits nicely but (like other big hold-in-pants) gave me terrible trapped wind (sorry). Nice for a couple of hours but not comfortable to wear for long.
The high leg light control pants are really nice for everyday wear. very comfortable, nice fabric and lovely and smooth.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

The range on-line is much bigger than in store (and the one I went in is a big one) although the shop lady offered to order in anything I wanted. Some good bright colours would be nice, rather than the everlasting black, white and nude. It would be nice to match up some pretty bras with the shapewear pants. I like a matching set!

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Probably. I showed my work colleagues while I was testing! it led to a big discussion on the merits of big hold-in-pants! Also my belly dancing friends! They were all rather taken with the lovely smooth light control pants.
(I didn't show them my whole pants, just the edges)

Thanks for the pants!

Funsponge · 17/06/2012 20:51

I have namechanged (again) does it matter?

nipitinthebud · 17/06/2012 20:58

I'm a teser and just to say....I will be leaving feedback but just waiting on a delivery tomorrow of knickers!

smallbean · 17/06/2012 23:12

Q1. Yes i've bought some 'Big Knickers' in the past, they were ok, but they ended just in the right spot to enhance one of my rolls. I looked online at first to see what i thought i might like and found plenty of choice.

Q2. I shopped in store, i really wanted to try out the various options.

Q3. I did my shopping at the mega-M&S at Pudsey so there was loads of stock and choice and I got what I wanted. I can usually find most things I see on the website there, I think if i had gone to my nearest store (Bradford) i might not have been so lucky.

Q4. I bought a slip that you wear your own bra with and some no VPL light control briefs and i think they were well made, the briefs were slightly more than i might have expected but i do like them.

Q5. I am satisfied with the items the slip really makes a difference under clingier dresses and i like being able to wear my own bra, it gives it a bit more flexibility, i think I'll get more wear out of it because of this. The no VPL briefs really work!

Q6. I think the range is very comprehensive but maybe some more colours in things like the camis and vests that are designed to be seen. I have an extensive collection of camis from primark in a range of colours that are great for everyday wear. I would definitely shop at M&S for shapewear again especially for the special occasion serious underwear.

Q7. Yes i would, there's plently of choice!

Dukandoit · 18/06/2012 08:20

I bought these and these and added some of my money to buy this shapewear swimsuit.

  1. Yes I have bought a couple of pairs of knickers in the past to wear out under smart dresses in the evening.
  1. I looked online first to have some idea of what was available. I went to a large store to spend my voucher. In some ways it was more confusing in store and I couldn't find exactly the size, colour, leg height, and style that I had in mind. There were no shaping vests in my size, only size 8 , so they must be popular. I liked being able to touch the fabric and guage how firm or not the item was. The second item I bought does not seem to be listed under shapewear online as I had trouble finding it for this thread, but instore it was with all the shapewear.
  1. I could not get exactly what I wanted although there did seem to be a lot of stock there, but it was confusing to find what I was looking for.
  1. I think the shorts are good value. The control briefs less so, though would tend to wear on a night out rather than everyday. The swimsuit did seem good value though have not been able to test in the water yet.
  1. I loved the feel of the shorts when I tried them on at home. But, the top of the legs show under tight trousers and tend to roll up which is annoying. I am less pleased with the expensive briefs. They feel very tight, and they are size 14 although I buy size 10 MandS trousers!! I had to remove them to eat my Sunday roast dinner as they made me feel ill.
  1. When choosing, I like my knickers to have some grip around the top if my legs otherwise they ride up and I find that very uncomfortable. Quite a few seemed tight on the tummy then completely loose on the legs so I disregarded them at once. I prefer nude or black for the shapewear. Definitely not white though I was drawn to the dark dusky mauve shade of some. I want it to be invisible under my clothes. Tend to buy from MandS though find it frustrating with knickers that often if I try something new I find it is not comfortable when I try it on at home. I don't feel I can try on knickers in store though I see some testers did this, so some items never get worn. Because of this I tend to stick to the tried and tested as don't want to waste money. I spent close to an hour looking at shapewear and later swimsuits trying to choose and spend my voucher. Not one sales assistant approached me or offered to help!!!

7.I have mentioned this test to a friend already but we don't usually discuss knickers. I had hoped to find some comfortable knickers for everyday but the shorts are the closest I could find and I still had to remove them part way through my Sunday roast dinner (which is not that huge but the biggest meal I eat all week).

Many thanks to MandS for including me in this trial and I hope the feedback is helpful.

Dukandoit · 18/06/2012 08:29

I meant to add that one thing which I really do not like is that now I have looked at shapewear on line it keeps pooping up on other pages and email. My children use this computer too and now I have to somehow disable the cookies which have done this. Annoying.

jellylegs · 18/06/2012 09:33

Q.1 - Website was great and was looking forward to buying vest, clinch shaping , baby fat busting underwear.............................however shocked in local store which had about 7 pairs of shapewear knickers tucked in corner and nearly all in large / plus sizes

Q.2 - I love on line and wish I had spent my voucher on line. My local store isnt huge and I think is stocked to meet local demographic (- not deemed cosmopolitan/sophisticated enough compared to nearer south east coast cousins!!)

Q.3 - NOTHING!!!!! but light/medium/support knickers , mainly in white, mainly in size 20. Was on way to wedding when I had popped in to store and had imagined buying camisole and boxer type shorts. Brought 3 pairs of ok, passion killing control knickers in nude, white and black in light support. THAT was the ONLY STOCK

Q.4 - The Nude strong support were good value as compared to other brands. the black and white lighter support were 9.50 each which again were ok- but less value -comparing quality

Q.5 - Loved the waist clinching Nude passion killing pants as held me ln all day- did start to feel uncomfortable towards end of day. Bit dissapointed in cotton light control as didnt like design and didnt feel greatly diffferent to other type knickers.

Q.6 -I have previously brought shapewear stuff at these type of prices were from another Well known, high street store and mail order. The range on line was great and in retrospect I wish I had brought on line. In store range was horrendus, just knickers , that are also known as, granny pants! I would have loved to buy some bodies or lace trim control slip.

Q.7 - I would recommend the on line range as I feel this is good value and has a good range. In my local store- the member of staff I asked for advice re range was lovely but useless! She knew nothing other than location of stand of knickers tucked in some quiet corner

Q1. I haven't bought shapewear before but as someone who has lost a lot of weight I wanted to find something that would help 'hide' all the lumps and bumps. I'm still a larger lady!

Q2. I like to look online then try instore - unless the offers are better online.

Q3. I tried to find items in M&S Hedge End and Portsmouth but was really disappointed as they did not stock many items and if they did they only had small sizes. Really disappointing as I couldn't test the items I had researched on the website. I think the colours available are fine.

Q4. I tried two pairs of knickers.

Light control all over lace shorts £12 - excellent value
Ultimate Magic Secret Support body define high rise knickers - £19.50 - Poor

Q5. The magic knickers were really disappointing. I bought my clothes size but they didn't seem to offer much support at all and the top kept rolling down. I got annoyed with these after 30 minutes and took them off. I wouldn't buy them again.
The lace shorts were a real pleasant surprise. I didn't expect much from them as they were only a light control but they did hold me in a little and they felt comfortable all day. Very pretty too!

Q6. I do not think there is anything missing from the range - they seem to have covered all angles - however more longline hold it all in knickers would be a bonus. I would buy from Debenhams and Next.

Q7. I would definitely recommend the shorts but not the 'magic knickers'

Q1. I bought some stomach squashing knickers years ago. I found both the website and in-store selection clearly labelled and easy to navigate.

Q2. I browsed in-store to get an idea of the shape and feel of things and then bought online to see if there was anything available I'd missed instore. I prefer buying online as it's much easier than browsing with a toddler in tow.

Q3. Lots of choice, and a wider variety of things than I'd assumed there would be. Stock availability was good in the main although the crossover vest I wanted was out of stock in store and online. Other than the vest, the other items I like were all available.

Q4. I bought the 2 Pack - Light Control Cotton Rich High Rise Shorts, Flatter-Me? High Rise Lace Light Shaping Shorts and Light Control Floral Lace Body. All seem well made and have washed nicely. They seem good value so far.

Q5. Really quite pleased. The cotton shorts are great for every day and give a slightly smoother silhouette under trousers. The lace shorts and body are pretty and effective which seems to be a rare combination in shapewear!

Q6. I'd like more in the way of camis/vests, but on the whole it seems a good selection for a wide range of problems.

Q7. Definitely. Reasonable price, good quality and attractive. Thank you.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

I had not bought from the Shapewear line at M&S before though I have bought some "big pants" before from a couple of M&S competitors.
I first went into the store and asked for assistance as I was not sure what came under the shapewear range Confused from the instore labelling on either racks or products and at first glance there were just three hideous looking products available under the shapewear banner, at which point I almost cried was disappointed to have to spend £35 of anyone's money on these products before I am 70 years old.
With kind but not overly knowledgeable assistance I was shown an array of bodies, pants and slips and advised to try them on.

I went in looking for any product that would give an out of shape body more shape and less wobbles under a jersey maxi dress or equivalent, but sadly I had been sent a wrong size for the maxi dress so that was being exchanged via mail order and I didn't have it to try on over the top of the following products. I spent a lot of time trying on bodies but ended up buying knickers/shorts.

I got stuck in tried on

It was light control but gave good shape. However as they only had a smaller size, the bust shape was not good in support and I queried whether the body length is long enough as the under-wiring appeared to come up a bit short. I also recall having to contort quite a way to do the poppers up underneath. So I opted for some different items instead:

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?
I ended up doing both, as I found the layout in store confusing and the assistants although helpful and kind in nature, were not briefed well enough in the products and the pros and cons of each or what would be good for me. I understood a lot more from the personal reviews on the website and the other reviews in this product test. The only problem between on-line and in store is that the products are labelled differently, called different things so it is hard without the codes to compare and eliminate those products known to be less suitable. I thought it would be better to buy in store and try things on but it took a long time and the reviews can do as well in their indication as to what and who the product is best suited (for).

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

I was told of the popularity of the shorts but we couldn't find them in store and so the assistant suggested they must be out of stock. It was only after a long time in the dressing room that I came out and walked straight past a whole wall of shorts, but I had lost the will to go back in and try again. There were several sizes missing in my size (16/18) across the whole range and I didn't find much in any colour outside of black or white, or black or nude... I rarely saw three choices of colour and certainly nothing more exciting. The product I liked best in the end they didn't have in store, so I took the details to buy it on-line, but in hindsight I opted for different items as the body length of the body was too short and the bust was pulled flat and unsupported. I opted in the end, based on the reviews here and on-line to go for knickers/shorts which would get nearly everyday use but would give better definition to the positive curves in my shape. Wink

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?
Because this product test coincided with a holiday I am yet to receive my final choice of item/s. However, I think that generally most products are fairly priced, apart from some very overpriced pants!

*Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?
I was not impressed with the lack of information as to what product was best under which type of garment and for which shaped/sized person. I was not impressed with the difficulty of getting some of the items on and off and I was not impressed with the lack of knowledge in store staff. I was also not impressed in the lack of continuity of labelling between store and on-line or the number of unsuccessful searches using the in-store package details for searching on-line. I was impressed by the over all range, particularly on line, and choice. I appreciated the courtesy and discretion of the in-store staff and their help. I liked the colour variety on-line and the on-line customer reviews to help choose the right product. I was impressed by some of the designs that were nice to look at, verging on sexy, as pieces of underwear not just practical garments. I really thought that the over all quality of the range was good.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?
I think M&S could do customers a favour by having someway of linking the products in store to those on line without needing to take down item codes. I think that if shapewear is a range, it could be more clearly identifiable as I am still not sure of what is incorporated and what isn't between all the secret support, secret slimming, tummy control, waist cinching etc and what the difference is. Being more aware of the range I would probably buy from M&S again, although my experience with on-line shopping with M&S is that the despatch and delivery time can be much longer than some competitors like John Lewis or House of Fraser, and for that reason alone I would be more tempted to buy from them as most shapewear bought by me would be bought to go under occasional wear and not everyday wear, but I would need to know I would have it in time for the occasion.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, especially as I have spent a lot of time looking at the range and have formed opinions on the pros and cons of certain items.

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 18/06/2012 19:02

I am a vest and pants kinda girl so bought

this vest in pink and black

and

these in black and pink

I have to say this is the first ever support vest I have owned that I haven't had to use a bra with as well!

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

I have a pair of control briefs from a few years ago that always washed well. It was very easy to find what I needed, pretty and light control. I was actually agog at the selection.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

I purchased online and had it delivered as the delivery charge is a great deal cheaper than the bus fayre to town - a major consideration in online shopping. I preferred doing it online as the reviews and descriptions were very helpful and I think I would have overlooked the vests in store as to fussy.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

Lots of choice and nothing I considered was oos.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?
Very much so, especially the vests they can easily be worn as outer or under wear.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

Was very pleased, but I think the black knickers are smaller than the pink. An oddity I am well used to with M&S. I cannot believe the shape they give yet feel like normal knickers

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?
I think a few more pretty pieces would be nice. I like looks and security with my undies Grin

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Didn't need to verbally recommendmy friend was so impressed with mine she bought her own

InsomniaQueen · 18/06/2012 19:34

Just to add I went back to M&S and returned the bodysuit I had got as I wasn't really that happy with it, I swapped it for this: www.marksandspencer.com/Control-Panelled-Selvedge-Waist-Cincher/dp/B0055WEIEM

Which was a HUGE improvement - it definitely took over an inch off me and I got exactly the look that I had been hoping for!!

Much happier with these and well worth the money - I shall definitely be telling people about these!!

Imstillstanding · 18/06/2012 22:26

Q1. Yes - years ago bought some control pants. For this study, it was easy to find the different garments available although when I put in 'control pants', the ones that I finally bought weren't automatically listed. I did finally find what I wanted (high waisted tummy control pants) when I looked at the 'what other people looked at' section.

Q2. I looked online first but then nipped to my local store to buy because I wasn't entirely sure what size I needed and I wanted them quickly for a particular occasion I was attending. I like buying online most of the time as it's quick and easier with a baby but going into the shop means you can try on before you buy and ensure you get what you need - the last think you need is the bits that are pulled in popping out the sides or top of the shapewear item!

Q3. Yes - I was surprised at the choice available - seemed to cover most needs. I would like the choice of more colours rather than just black or nude and one of the vests I looked at wasn't available in my size. I did however get what I specifically went in for in my size - but I'm pretty standard. It would also be great if they could sexier but I suppose for most of the range that would be quite difficult considering what it's for.

Q4. Yes - I think the knickers were £19 which was much less than I thought I would have to spend for the item. I can't find the knickers that I bought on the website anymore but they were tummy control knickers that gave support up to under the bust area (and no thigh support).

Q5. I was quite satisfied because I thought that the knickers did improve my silhouette under the dress I wore but when reviewing photos, was disappointed that it did not give as firm control over my baby belly that I had expected. The knickers did not roll down at all and were very comfortable to wear.

Q6. I think the underwear range is good and covers most needs that I can think of. I have also previously searched M&S for tummy control leggings but couldn't find them and finally got some great ones from John Lewis Online. These are fantastic and tummy control trousers and skirts would be a good addition to the range. I would probably still try M&S first but would also check John Lewis & Debenhams.

Q7. Yes - as I said before, there is lots of choice (except colour) which would provide something for most people at a decent price.

JustFabulous · 19/06/2012 10:02

Well, I am finally wearing my big pants. They are very comfortable and give me a smooth front but don't appear to pull me in that much. I would consider getting another item of shapewear though.

Halfling · 19/06/2012 11:14

I have purchased "Gorgeous Waist Sculpt? Firm Control Floral Lace Knickers", size 14 from an M&S store. I tried it out by wearing it on a day out for around 10 hours under a jeans and top.

Q1. Have you bought Shapewear from M&S before? When you first started investigating the shapewear range as part of this product test, how easy or difficult was it to find out about the different types of garments available? Did you find what you had in mind?

Yes, I have purchased "Firm Control High Rise Traditional Knickers" shapewear from M&S before. It was easy to go to the store and find out about the different shapewear available as they well arranged and displayed in the store. I have also used M&S website to find out more and I am completely satisfied with the online experience.

Q2. Did you shop for shapewear in store or online, or both? Which method do you prefer for buying things like shapewear and why?

I have shopped in store as I prefer to try out the shapewear first and see if the garment is fitting me well. I was also not sure whether I will be able to return it if I shopped for it online, since this is a lingerie item. However, now that I know my size and return policy, I may shop for it online, as I see greater variety on the website.

Q3. Do you think there is enough choice in terms of styles, shapes, sizes, colours etc or not? How was the stock availability when you did your shopping? Were you able to get what you wanted in your size or not?

I am pleased with the variety of shapewear available - slips, knickers, low leg, high leg etc. However, I could not try a few shapewear garments because the store was out of stock in my size (size 14). I was ultimately able to get exactly what I wanted - a high leg, high waist shapewear garment which allowed me to wear my own bra and was quite comfortable.

Q4. Do you think that the shapewear item(s) you bought were good value for money or not? Why?

I think the shapewear range is quite affordable and the prices are not inhibitive. I find them good value for money.

Q5. How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the shapewear item(s) you bought and why? Is there anything you were particularly impressed with? Or anything you were disappointed by?

I am very happy with my current purchase.
- It hides my lumps and gives me a smooth silhouette with medium control.
- It is very comfortable and I was able to wear it for ten hours at a stretch without any discomfort.
- There is no bunching up of my skin folds on top of the shapewear garment.
- It retains it shape after wearing for long periods.

Q6. Do you think there's anything M&S could do to improve the range? Do you think there are any items missing from it at the moment? If you were going to shop for shapewear again, which other retailers (if any!) would you consider buying from?

I would love to buy a shapewear body solution like "Waist Sculpt? Firm Control Bonded Body" but without the bra being underwired. I personally find wearing a body shapewear+underwired bra uncomfortable for anything more than 2-3 hours.

Q7. Lastly, if it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend M&S shapewear to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Absolutely. I have already recommended it to my friends in the past and will continue to do so.

Halfling · 19/06/2012 11:17

Also, inresponse to question #6, I will definitely consider buying shapewear from M&S again. Other retailer I would consider is 'Spanx'.

Halfling · 19/06/2012 11:23

I have a suggestion. It will be great if there is some product information regarding what problem areas the shapewear garment will tackle.

For example, whether a given garment will address the problem of tummy, love handles, undefined waist, lumpy thighs etc.
