NOW CLOSED: Tesco’s Naturally Powered (antibacterial spray or non-bio washing powder) product testers review thread

AnnMumsnet · 01/05/2012 14:54

This thread is for the 1000 Mumsnetters who are trying out the Naturally Powered range of cleaning products by Tesco.

If you don't know about these products, here's what Tesco has to say:

"In the past, green cleaning products have been let down by their performance. Working closely with a team of chemists, scientists and environmental experts, we have created the Naturally Powered range of eco cleaning products - specially formulated to have a reduced impact on the environment than other leading products and with the cleaning performance you'd expect."

Mumsnetters have been testing either the antibacterial spray or the non-bio washing powder. In addition, all testers received a trial-sized sachet of washing up liquid.

If you are a tester, please state which product you were testing and answer the questions below - feel free to also add any other comments you may have.

Everyone who adds their comments to this thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one person will win £200 of Tesco vouchers.

Questions:

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

Q1_ I didn't really have any opinion of them before using them.

Q2_ I liked the washing powder. I used it 4 times so far and was quite impressed with it.I liked the little cup that came with it too. it washes like other powder though. So it does the job and has a very nice strong smell. so overall i was very happy with it.
the washing liquid was ok it didn't lather very much but did the job.

Q3_ the washing powder worked just as well as my normal powder and it left a nice smell on the clothes.

Q4_ Im not very concerned about green credentials as im on a very tight budget so if it was comparatively priced then i would buy it.

Q5_ That depends on the price. If its the same price as the other brands then yes i would as its a good product.

Q6_ Nothing to the washing powder.
But would try and get the liquid to lather more if its possible.

Q7_ If it came up in conversation then yes i would as its a very good product and has a good smell and because you only have to use about half of what i normally use.

Thanks for the chance to test the product!Smile

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?
I'd never heard of them! I've recently switched to shoping online, mainly with Asda so spend very little time browsing in Tesco. I also very rarely watch TV advertising due to having Sky+, so not sure if this contributed.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
The Antibac spray worked well. I generally buy value ranges, currently using up the last of a bottle of Tesco's Daisy range for example, and I would say the Naturally Powered spray easily worked just as well.
I'm undecided on the smell, initially I thought it was too strong but it did grow on me. I can see what other posters have said about it being nice that surfaces etc really smell "clean", however I often use antibac spray to wipe down DD's highchair in between meals, alternating with a proper clean with hot soapy water. For some reason I felt the smell of the product was too strong for this, but I think thats just me being fussy!

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
As above, I would say just as well. I'm happy with the products I generally use so not sure how this product could have outperformed it in any way.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
Whilst being green is important to me, my main concern at the moment is price. I am in my final 3 months of unpaid extended maternity leave and I am living off my savings, on that basis I'm "downgrading" all round and generally buying economy products for the time being as much as possible.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
Dependent on price. I haven't looked to see how much they are in comparison to the products I normally use in all honesty. They would need to be in line with them, or on offer, for me to consider it. If they were, and I was shopping in Tesco then yes...however as mentioned I rarely venture into my local Tesco, I don't feel like putting myself through the torture too often!

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
Possibly consider toning down the smell, or offer another product with less fragrance.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
If priced reasonably then definitely!

Thanks for the chance to test the product!

Spray and washing up liquid

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them? Never seen them but probably wouldnt have bought them

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products? Love the spray, think the fragrance is just right. Washing up Liquid - Nope - washed greasy trays and just didn't last long enough

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use? Spray - Much much better, have black granite which is the bane of my life, left it shiny without any residue

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not? Not bothered about green credentials - more interested in them killing germs.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not? - Spray - yes, was impressed

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing? Spray better bottle, if you squeeze it it sprays out. Washing Up Liquid - no wasnt as good as normal on

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes would purely because we moan about granite streaks !

EauRouge · 07/05/2012 13:13

DH would like to add that his ice hockey stuff smells nice now whereas the stuff we were using before never quite got it smelling fresh.

weenwee · 07/05/2012 14:55

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

I had never heard of them before.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

I had the multi surface spray. While it worked well, the smell was still a bit chemical, and it left a fine film on the surfaces, so I had to wipe down with water afterwards.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

Considering I use vinegar, baking soda, and lemons, I'm sad to say it worked just as well, but FAR more toxic!

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

What precisely is green about it? Other than the 100% recycled packaging, it had all the same chemicals as normal cleansers - www.geekfamily.co.uk/tescos-naturally-powered-review/2012/05/07 .

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

No, I'll keep using my homemade cleansers.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

First, get rid of the fragrance. Secondly, do not call it anti-bacterial. All soap is anti-bacterial, it's just a marketing jargon that means nothing, and annoys me.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

If the friend was looking for a slightly less toxic cleanser to what they normally use, I'd recommend it. If they were looking for an eco-friendly product, I'd teach them how to clean with vinegar and baking soda.

Anti-bac spray:-

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?
Hadn't heard of them except via this test. Was looking forward to comparing performance of an 'eco' product with my usual choice.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
Liked the product overall, lovely fresh smell and impressed by cleaning power.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
Preferred this to my usual anti-bac spray. Usually use a 'kitchen cleaner' spray followed by a wipe-down with anti-bac but this product did both jobs in one. Made a great job of hob and interior of fridge.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
Don't usually buy green cleaning products as always dubious as to how effective they will be but would happily buy this now I know that it works. Have to say I'm unsure as to what the product's green credentials are aside from the fact the bottle is recycled. Not clear what 'naturally powered' actually means - bottle is strangely silent on this and list of ingredients looks similar to my normal anti bac.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
Would buy the spray again as impressed by results. Not sure if I would try other products in range - usually swayed by price/special offers.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
Would like the green credentials to be more clearly set out on the bottle. Some improvements needed to the design of the bottle too - the plastic on the spray top is quite brittle and sharp and managed to cut my finger first time I turned the trigger on.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, because of performance/smell. But if they were particularly concerned about its eco-credentials I think I would struggle to convince them as I'm still in the dark as to how environmentally friendly this product actually is.

LoisLame · 07/05/2012 17:58

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

To be honest, I thought they were a load of tree hugging hippy crap. I would have expected them to be focused more on an earthy smell and post consumer recycled packaging than effective antibacterial and cleaning capabilities.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

The washing up liquid: I thought was as good as the one I currently use, which is a rival supermarket own brand. It did work, but since I had alot of washing to do that day, I found that I had to "top up" with my own washing up liquid towards the end. Whether or not I am happy with the performance would depend on the price. I would be happy if it is cheaper than the leading brand and on par with the other tesco brands. I liked the smell, very fresh and long lasting fragrance and the feel was ok, not too drying on my hands.

The antibacterial spray: I quite liked it overall. It worked better than I expected in that I sprayed a bit of stuck on crud on my work surface and the spray shifted it with a little elbow grease after only about 30 seconds soaking. It left the surface clean looking, clean smelling and didn't leave a residue so all good. I was happy with the performance and would trust that it was as antibacterial as claimed. I really liked the smell which I found to be citrussy fresh but not overpowering, although it made my whole kitchen smell nice after use, and again liked the feel in that it left no residue on my surfaces.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

They both worked as well as my usual products but I do prefer the smell of the sample antibac spray.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

The green credentials are not very important to me. If it was a choice between several products of the same price, I would probably choose the eco friendly one, but I would not go out of my way to look for such products and I certainly would not pay more just for green credentials.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

I will buy it if it is the same price as my usual products, or if it is on offer.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

The packaging was fine. I did not have any problems with the functionality of the spray bottle. I like the logo and labelling apart from the emphasis on the palm oil claim. I don't understand why you wouldn't find an alternative to using palm oil when you have obviously put alot of money and effort into producing eco friendly products.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would recommend it, but again, it would depend on pricing. I think my overall feedback would be yes, it smells nice, does what you want it to, just as good as the leading brand.

Cookie79 · 07/05/2012 18:18

I tested the antibacterial spray with a sachet of the washing up liquid.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them? No opinion, had not heard of them.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products? Spray - overall opinion was ok, nice smell, not so great on dried on marks. Washing up liquid - ok but bubbles didn't last long.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use? Slightly weaker than usual product.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not? Not particularly important.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not? No, I prefer Cif, better smell, works a bit better on dried stains and the bottle doesn't feel as flimsy. Liquid - bubbles didn't last that long.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
Better quality of the spray bottle, feels like it'll slip out of my hand as compared to the Cif spray.
Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not? Probably not unless they were interested in green products.

llynnnn · 07/05/2012 20:15

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

I hadn't heard of them before, but my general opinion of more natural products were that they weren't as powerful or effective.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

I tested the antibacterial spray and liked it. The product worked, especially on my kitchen worktops and hob. It also cleaned the fence paint from my kitchen cupboards (thanks dh Hmm) I also liked the smell of the spray too, although the nozzle tends to leak the spray out onto my hand while I was spraying it.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

It worked just as well as my usual spray (tesco usual antibacterial spray)

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

I am trying to use more 'green' products, however, unfortunately, cost is also a big factor in my product choice and i find more eco-friendly products are usually more expensive.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

It depends on the price compared to my usual regular spray. If there was only a marginal difference I would buy this one.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

The nozzle could be improved so it didnt leak out onto my hand.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I would recommend as it is more eco-friendly and i liked the smell and it actually works.

wornoutbutstillwonderful · 07/05/2012 20:27

I tested the washing powder.

Q1. I thought it was a great idea but I hadn't heard of the product.

Q2. Yes I did like the smell and the feel, a little messy though. I wasn't that impressed with the overall performance I thought it was pretty standard if not a bit worse than my usual powder.

Q3. Slightly worse

Q4. They are important but with a family of 5 cost and effectiveness are the most important to me.

Q5. Probably not, I have 3 sons that can get remarkably grubby and so I need a better performing product.

Q6. More deep cleaning performance.

Q7. I would talk about it to a friend but I would have to mention its that it isn't too good on stains.

Bert2e · 07/05/2012 20:47

OK extended test results for washing powder are in and I am NOT HAPPY Angry

The fecking stuff doesn't dissolve in the drawer of my washing machine and now it has ruined 2 newish t shirts, a pair of pj bottoms and some socks by leaving bleach marks on them. No wonder it cleans white stuff so well it's FULL OF FECKING BLEACH Angry. So Tesco what are you going to do about it?

debka · 07/05/2012 20:53

I tested the washing powder.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them? I had no opinion. I don't shop at tesco

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products? I was very impressed with the products. They worked just as well as my normal product. I loved the smell, the box- all of it

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use? They worked just as well as my normal cleaning product.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not? I like the green credentials, if it was the right price I would buy it

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not? I don't shop at tesco so I wouldn't but if I did, I would Grin

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing? No improvements, I thought they were great

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not? I would, I was pleased with the washing powder.

Blatherskite · 07/05/2012 21:08

Bert2e - I've just put pairs of black tracksuit bottoms, some pants and some scoks back in the wash assuming the white stains were un-rinsed powder! I'm going to be very, very annoyed if they're bleached Shock

The fabric feels all stiff and rough too. I really hope they're not ruined.

cakeismysaviour · 07/05/2012 21:20

I tested the wash powder.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using
them?

Hadn't heard of them, but was interested to try eco-washing powder, as I had considered eco products before, but was unsure if they would perform as well as my usual products.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

The powder seemed to work well. It got my baby's stained clothes clean at a low temperature, so I was happy with the eco aspect of that! The powder didn't leave a strong smell, which didn't bother me even though I do love the smell of clean laundry. Otherwise it felt/looked like most other wash powders.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

I usually use whatever wash powder is on offer! This includes both branded and own-brand products. Most of the powders I have used wouldn't be able to remove heavy stains (baby poo/vomit) at low temperatures, but this one did.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

It would have an effect on my decision to buy. I like the idea of being able to wash things at a lower temperature and I like the idea of avoiding harsh chemicals where possible. However, other factors are also important eg price. I would be prepared to pay a little extra for an eco product that performs on a par with other products, but if the eco products were too expensive I wouldn't buy.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

I will if they are not too expensive, because I like the idea of using eco products and the powder performed well.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

None.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I would if they asked because the powder removed stains well.

lagoonhaze · 07/05/2012 21:23

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

Never heard of it to be honest!

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

I tried the washikng up liquid sample. Very impressed. Cleaned the dishes well and smelt nice.

Washing powder non bio. Worked ok. Didnt remove the poo stains from my nappies but to be honest not sure the normal powder would have either. Clothes clean and partner commented on smell.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

Overall just as well except on nappies.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

Fairly important. I know I should care more than I do but right no cost is key at moment. Prior to the recession I was more eco conscious

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

Depends on price TBH.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

None

turnipvontrapp · 07/05/2012 21:32

Antibacterial spray

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them? That they were more environmentally friendly

Q3. How did the products compare to your ususal cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use? Just as well.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not? Important, yes, environment is something we should all be concerned about.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not? Maybe.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing? More detail on its environmental credentials.

DorothyGherkins · 07/05/2012 21:53

Q1 What was your opinion of Naturally Powered products before using them?

I d used the washing up liquid in this range before on occasions, I liked that very much, but wasnt aware of the anti bac spray.

Q2 After using the products what was your overall opinion?

I was quite impressed that this was a 'naturally powered' product. Sometimes the green options are so good on dirt. I used it on all types of surfaces, kitchen bathroom etc, and it seemed to remove dirt and gunge. Quite like the packaging, plain and simple.

Q3 How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products.

The result was the same, good clean surfaces, but the smell! It was much much better than I expected, loved the smell, clean without being clinical or chemical. Clean but gentle. Some antibac sprays make me choke a bit on the fumes, this one didnt, so I hope that shows its much kinder to you.

Q4 How important are the green credentials to you?

I must admit that the green credentials arent the first thing I look for. Being on a low wage, the price is usually the deciding factor when I buy something, but if the green option is available at the same price, then I would buy the green.

Q5 Will you continue to buy?

Yes I would. I dont always shop in Tesco, but the times that I do shop in there, I would certainly think about picking up a bottle of this.

Q6 What improvements would you make?

After a short trial, I cant think immediately of anything that I would change.

Q7 If it came up in conversation, would you recommend?

Yes, I certainly would! I shall recommend to my daughter who has a young baby, who likes to keep surfaces clean, but would prefer not to introduce chemicals into the surroundings when they are not necessary.

FaceCrack · 07/05/2012 21:58

I am using the washing powder.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

I did not know they existed.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

All in all, a pretty good product. Some of the clothes came out feeling slightly crispy. I liked the fact the smell was neutral though.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

Not quite as good as Fairy or Ecover, which I normally use.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

Fairly important but price is the biggest driving force. We normally go for something suitable for a babies skin but also look for the offer / price.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

I might if I saw it on offer.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

I did not like the plastic bag that the powder came in as it made it difficult to pour.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, I would probably say it didn't quite match up to Ecover but it was a good buy if on offer.

lubeybooby · 07/05/2012 22:00

Hadn't heard of them

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

I tested the antibacterial spray and it was brilliant, loved the performance and the smell. It got some long ingrained marks off my kitchen cupboard doors.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

Better

Dp ued it in the bathroom this morning and was very impressed with it - and since he does most of the cleaning, his opinion matters much more than mine! He said that the smell was really nice and that it worked better on the (v grubby after dd2 had used it!) bath than our usual Ecover.

Testing the antibac spray

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them? No opinion as not aware of them

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products? Work well, smell ok quite strong, left a chalky residue on our stainless steel sink and drainer

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not? Slightly important, but not as important as price

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not? Probably not due to residue

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing? Smell, chalky residue, and quality of the bottle and spray trigger

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not? Possibly, but not generally something we discuss

TodaysAGoodDay · 07/05/2012 22:16

I had the washing powder.
Q1: I have tried other brands in the past, and not been very impressed with them.
Q2: I was very surprisingly pleased with it. My clothes were as clean as usual, and I was very happy with the result. I really like the scent of the powder.
Q3: It worked as well as the product I usually use.
Q4: Green credentials are increasingly important to me, as I am more aware of the planet than I used to be.
Q5: I will keep buying it if the price is similar to the one I usually get.
Q6: Not an improvement as such, but I found that 20g was more than enough for a wash. Admittedly we do live in an extremely soft water area, but maybe you could add that to the pack? I think even 15g would work. At 20g, that would give me 40 washes which is fantastic.
Q7: Absolutely, without a doubt. I have already recommended it to my family.
