  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DD started out saying it was 'ok' but gave up fairly soon, admitted she didn't really like it, although she wanted too, chocolate flavours not usually on offer for breakfast here!

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I liked that it was simple and straightforward to make, but we won't be buying it again, agree with others would much rather buy normal porridge and add our own flavour.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

I did like the simplicity of the sachets and not having to think about portion etc.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

I think the flavour needs changing completely, it is not appealing to children - at least not mine anyway!

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
Boys are 5 and 7 and both loved the chocolate porridge - but to be fair they both love anything chocolate and I wont normally buy them any chocolate cereal. The milk measure in the bag was very good, portion size was just right but I reduced the milk a bit as it was a bit sloppy. It wasn't actually as chocolatey as I expected it to be. The boys did ask if I would buy more of this porridge but having seen the price in the supermarket I wont be - it would be much cheaper to stir a spoon of hot chocolate into my normal porridge and would give the same result! I really don't see the need to give children chocolate at every meal - they should be encouraged to eat other things and my version with added fresh fruit is much healthier.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
It is any easy to make version of porridge - mine is always a bit hit and miss consistency wise as I never measure anything - I should add that we are regular porridge eaters but just use oats and golden syrup / apple / banana

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
I didn't like the way that the box opened on the long side - it would be better if it opened on the top as the sachets kept falling out in the cupboard. The milk measure in the sachet was fiddly but it did mean that I didn't need to get a measuring jug out

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
I'd like to see some dried fruit in the porridge to add to their 5 a day.

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

Out of the four kids and 2 adults who tried it, only two of the children liked it. Everyone said it didn't taste chocolately enough, everyone said it wasn't sweet enough, everyone thought the smell was strange and when it cools, it is way too thick. I had a little taste from one of the kids and didn't like the aftertaste, it tastes like it has sweetners in it and is bitter in the mouth after you have swallowed it. My 7 year old says it tastes more like vanilla than chocolate.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

It is quick and easy to make, a hot breakfast on a cold morning. We buy the normal oat so simple as my partner eats it (but he didn't like this flavour). We won't be buying this chocolate flavour one. We had high hopes for it as my children don't normally get chocolate cereals so I was really shocked that all of them said it didn't taste like chocolate and suprised that they didn't think it was sweet enough as they don't get highly sugared cereals either.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

We all liked the packaging although the red bowl on the pack looks like the bear has it's mouth open and teeth bared at first glance. The sachets are great and handy to have the milk measurement line on the side.

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

I never thought I would say it but it needs to be more chocolately and sweeter and the bitter aftertaste needs to go. I know the ingredients say 100% natural but this product has a very noticable bitterness that I've only ever tasted with something that has sweetners added. We are a sweetner free household so we can usually taste it if Aspartame etc is added. I think a little more milk needs to be added to account for the thickening that occurs when it has cools to a temperature that is edible for children.

Questions

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

They were rather unimpressed I'm afraid. I'd made DD's in a plastic bowl and it seemed to have overcooked hers compared to the ones made in normal china bowls, so she pushed it away and refused to try even the smallest mouthful! I asked DS his opinion and he said and I quote, "I don't like the smell it makes me cough" Followed by the fakest sounding cough known to mankind... I thought it was rather slimy. (the porridge not my DS's comments)

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

Well I would of been attracted by the chocolate flavouring that is advertised but wholly disappointed by it, not nearly chocolatey enough.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

DS and I liked the bear, DS thought he looked funny but DD wasn't too sure about it. She didnt seem to like his eyes. The individual sachets were handy as was the measuring out the milk in them.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

DS would like the porridge to have toppings you can add to it, like chocolate drops and dried strawberries and raisins.

Thank you for allowing us to try the product but not for us i'm afraid.

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

My 3 DC were very excited about trying this cereal and their first reactions were that they like it very much and wanted more. However, after eating just a few spoonfuls, 1 child said he didn't like it, 1 child said she liked it but didn't want to eat any more so could she have Shreddies please and the other child kept on eating. Another few spoonfuls later, the last child still eating the porridge declared it a 'yucky' and requested weetabix! DD said it made her mouth feel funny and DS said he didn't like how thick it was when it had cooled down a bit. DS2 (2.8y) just made a funny face and said no more apart from it's not nice!
DH tried it the next day (he was also excited about eating chocolate porridge for breakfast!) and was also not a fan. He ate the whole bowl but said he has no interest in ever eating it again.
We were both disappointed to see that the 'chocolate' was not actually really cocoa. I am sure this is what makes it have so much less sugar than similar products but it is definitely not as tasty because of it.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

Main benefits and the key reason for buying the product is obviously the fact that it has so much less sugar than it's competitors and the nutritional benefits that porridge provides.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

We all like the packaging, both the box and the individual sachets. I liked the measuring line on the sachets as it meant I didn't have to use another jug to do this. The box, however, didn't open as easily as I would have expected.

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

As stated above, my DC didn't enjoy the taste of the porridge so this would be the only area I would suggest is improved. How you would do this whilst maintaining the reduced sugar amount, I don't know.

Sonji · 15/02/2012 18:07

I don't usually allow sugary/chocolate cereals for my ds, however was willing to give Quaker oats a go because of the "50% less sugar than other cereals". DS thought it was lovely and was making yummy sounds throughout eating!! Packaging is good, nice and compact. Sachets great as they are simple and quick - no need for measuring out.
Would I buy again?? Yes, I think so.....for a treat, not everyday, as I personally thought it was too sweet Blush.

Questions

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DS1 said it looked like a melted poo and would not even try it. DS2 ate it but said it had a 'funny taste'. DH liked the consistency but not the taste. I thought it smelled like baby choc pudding.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

None. I would not buy the product.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

Cute Bear packaging. Sachets are a good idea if the product was tasty.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

The Oats So Simple range is good generally and I usually buy the Golden Syrup one for me for work but I would prefer my children to eat plain porridge with syrup or sugar than this chocolate porridge.

And i would rather eat plain porridge and a bar of chocolate than this Choco Porridge!!

Questions
1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

I have a ds aged 5 and a dd aged 7. DD really did not like it. She said that ?porridge should not taste of chocolate? I asked her what she disliked about it and she said that it just did not taste very nice.

DS on the other hand really enjoyed it. I have had to alter the consistency a little as he likes his porridge thicker than it came out with the milk up to the line and I also need to be able to cool it down with cold milk. He did comment that it did not really taste all that much of chocolate, but he seems to like it ? particularly with chopped banana added.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

If I am really honest, I?m not sure that I would buy it again. But I am pleased with having had the opportunity to try it as it has had the knock on effect of reminding my children that they actually do like porridge and they have both requested normal (Quaker Smile) porridge oats that have been sitting in the cupboard for a while.

I would say that, for others, one of the main benefits would be the ease of making porridge for just one person.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

Both children really liked the box. I really liked the individual sachets; although I did feel a little guilty about the excess packaging, I liked that it was paper based, rather than plastic, so can be more easily recycled.

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

My children really like things in their porridge, like raisins or banana, or a little sprinkling of brown sugar on the top, so the addition of toppings could be nice, particularly if you did this with plain, rather than chocolate porridge.

They also like to do things for themselves, so would like the idea of having children?s instructions to let them know how to make it.

Thank you!

DazR · 15/02/2012 19:10

Thank you so much for including us in your trial - as mentioned on the 'other' thread I have a confession to make. My DH set your product on fire after I had accidentally left it on the glass oven top. He was cooking dinner as I had had an operation the previous day and he turned on the wrong hotplate. Flames were 2 foot high when we noticed the smoke creeping into the lounge!! We have all learnt a valuable lesson and will no longer put anything on top of the cooker.....

So - my comments on your product are rather restricted! We liked the packaging very much and think that individual sachets are a good idea and more appealing to teenagers making their own breakfasts.

Sorry

Questions

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

They liked the fact that it was quite milky, they loved the smell and enjoyed the taste - finishing all of it despite not being porridge lovers beforehand.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

Easy to use, sachets well designed. Easy to do porridge for one.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

DCs loved the box, liked the bear.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Not really, they loved it as it was.

Questions

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

My youngest DD aged 4 enjoyed it and ate all of hers. My oldest DD initially liked it but having got 3/4 of the way through her bowl decided it made her feel sick! She also said it didn't really taste of chocolate.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I would buy it if it meant my oldest would eat porridge as she doesn't like plain porridge. My youngest will eat plain porridge so I wouldn't buy it just for her.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

I thought the packaging was attractive and liked the individual sachets. However, I found pouring the milk into the empty sachet a bit fiddly and would prefer to use a measuring jug.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

We really enjoy the ritual of putting a bit of honey or brown sugar on our porridge, so perhaps you could include some small sachets of different flavours instead of flavouring the porridge itself.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

Not keen overall, despite being desperate to try 'proper' porridge ( I use ready brek or similar). It smelled synthetic to me but DD didn't seem bothered.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
I don't have a microwave but the alternative method is simple enough. However, considering it's just chocolate powder, why couldn't you use dried milk powder and make the whole thing 'instant'?
  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
The packaging was fine, I preferred the individual sachets and as they were paper, I wasn't worried about the waste of packaging.
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
Oh, probably a club online or a free gift . That's what they like. As far as the product is concerned - probably some larger pieces of chocolate. But the further you go down that route the less I'll like it. If I was marketing it, I'd do cuddly three bears (collectable with tokens) or ceramic ones, like the Natwest Pigs of my Yoof. How we coveted those pigs.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DD (8) refused to eat it beacuse it says porridge on the box (we live in Scotland Blush although she happily eats Weetabix, ready Brek etc. DS (10) was up for it - anything chocolatey and he's happy , but not this time. he thoguht it was disgusting and asked me not to buy it for him. Said it didn't taste of anything nice and he'd rather have had the plain oats. Also the portion size wasn't enough for a 10 year old - if he'd liked it obviously! We then gave my dad (who will officially eat anything) a sachet and he wasn't impressed.
The temperature was also far too hot having been cooked for 2 mins in the microwave, so there was a lot of faffing aorund waiting for the oats to cool down enough to eat.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I wouldn't buy them, sorry. We'll be sticking to Weetabix etc. I can see the conveninece of them being in sachets for taking to work etc, but then you could also just take some Weetabix/oats etc into work in a wee plastic bag, much cheaper and just as easy.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
They loved the idea of pouring the milk into the empty bag although it did get a bit messy! The box is fine - good quality packaging and appealing. hard to open without ripping the box though! Dd has asked fr the box to make things out of so it's had the quality approval there!
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Larger portions for older children - my 10 year old would ahve eaten at least 2 saches if he'd liked it. Also the flavouring was very bland and not appealing.

Thank you for letting us try it though!

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DD (age14) loves porridge. We normaly make our own with added sultantas or have a sachet of Oat so Simple Golden Syrup flavour. The texture was just about right. Unfortunately for DD that was probably the only thing that was right. DD felt the porridge looked rather weird, a very pale insipid beigey brown. DD is a bit of a chocoholic - don't know who she gets that from Blush unfortunatley the porridge lacked a chocolate taste for DD and for me when I tried a spoonful. It has an artificial taste and and tasted a bit odd. DD did suggest we added a teaspoon of drinking chocolate to see if this chocced it up a bit. Verdict: needs more chocolate.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I do use Oat So Simple on a fairly regular basis but wouldn't buy this flavour again. Porridge is a very filling breakfast and I tend to buy Oat So Simple for the convience.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

The packaging is very eye ctching and would appeal to small children. I like the individual sachets as they provide just enough for DD and I - maybe too much for small children. The fact I don't have to faff about measuring out oats is a plus first thing in the morning.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

For the chocolate flavour i'd suggest more chocolate. However I would try and keep the flavours natural. Apple, Syrup flavours. Do you do a Banana flavour? DD used to love the baby 'nana porridge.

Thanks to MN and Quaker for giving us the opportunity to test this product.

  1. my dd (4) absolutely loved it! She has had it for breakfast on several, days and has eaten it all up which is not like her at all, my son (8) was not so keen.

2)!the sachets were handy and made it easy to just make porridge for one.

  1. we all liked the bear and the box was quite appealing.

  2. my ds said it needs to be much more chocolatey! Also agree with puzzles/word searches on the back - my ds loves them!

Thanks for the opportunity - am sure we will be buying for my dd!

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance? Kids liked it at first, but didn't really seem to rave about it the way I thought they would. DS, 5, said there wasn't enough in the bowl, so gave him another sachet! Overall they liked it. They said it wasn't very chocolatey, but it seemed to go down OK.
  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product? Convenience! Easy to make and minimal washing up.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)? Make it a little more chocolatey and maybe put a bit more in each sachet, as my DS needed another helping.

Questions

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DS2 and DD1 did not like the cereal , the texture was to runny and they felt it did not taste of chocolate. they did like the look of it and did not comment on the smell so it could not have been bad.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

It is simpler (quicker) to make than normal porridge and portion size is useful but i would not buy the product The DCs and I prefer normal porridge with a spoonful od chocolate spread.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

Packaging and sachets were appealing and were excited too try it but after one go they decided even though they liked the package they did not like the contents.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Improve the flavour an texture.
Add facts/jokes to the box and sachets

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

My son (age 4) said that while the porridge smelled "delicious" the texture and flavour were both "yucky." He did not want to finish his bowl after taking the first bite. I tried a sample of his bowl and have to agree that the taste was a bit disappointing...very bland and an underwhelming hint of chocolate. The aroma of the porridge whilst cooking was quite nice but the flavour did not live up to expectation. I'll admit that I added a bit of sugar to my portion in order to make it taste nicer (which defeats the purpose of a low sugar cereal in the first place)

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

The main benefit of a product of this kind would be convenience and reasonably healthful qualities, particularly compared to other pre-sweetened porridges on the market. I would feel comfortable giving my child this product (assuming he actually enjoyed it!) on a regular basis.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

The design on the box was definitely inviting for children. My son was very eager to try the porridge based on the box design alone. The bear on the bottom was a big hit with him. The individual sachets are nice for portion control purposes but I would not use the sachet itself to measure out the amount of milk to mix with the oats. For me it seems easier and less messy to use a standard measuring cup.

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

I would hate to see a product of this kind go down the route of yogurts and other "healthy" foods by adding sweets, chocolate bits, other sugar-coated confectionaries in order to make them more interesting for children. I think, if there are to be any "add-ins" it might benefit from dried fruits or nuts---a bit of texture contrast would certainly liven up a hot cereal more than just another spoonful of sugar or syrup.

Thanks for letting us take part in the survey. I am sorry that DS did not find the product more appealing.

Questions 1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
The first morning dd1 (2.10) knew we were going to have chocolate porridge she was very excited. Her first word on trying it was "tasty". Dd2 (1.4) also got stuck in. I had one small taste and decided not to taste it again. However both girls finished a full packet each. Day 2 both girls asked for chocolate porridge again for breakfast. I gave them both a full portion each, but girls not as eager to eat it and only ate about half the portion each. Day 3 dd1 asked for the 'other' porridge, i.e. The porridge we usually have for breakfast made with oats, apples and cinnamon. We haven't had chocolate porridge since despite me offering it.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to
buy the product?

I won't be buying the product as it took longer to make and was more faff than usual and the girls prefer our usual porridge which am sure works out much cheaper.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

We loved the packaging design and played with the box after taking the portions out. I liked the portion sizes already being measured out.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

No, I'll be sticking to making porridge from scratch with oats and fruit.

Oops was in the middle of copying and pasting on my phone and for some reason only known to itself my phone has posted it Blush will try to do it again now hopefully completed with answers :)

Hi,
1.They felt that the texture was a little to lumpy and the taste not as sweet as they would like (!)

  1. I would buy the brand because it is well known for quality and is very easy to prepare. I like the idea of the microwaveable packets, as it give the kids an idependence when it comes to chosing and cooking their own breakfast on busy weekdays. It would also be ideal if we went away anywhere. Unfotuantely home this half term.
  2. They found the packets a little to hard to open, but I think that was mainly due to them now knowing how to do it. They also thought the design a little stange. The packets were not a large enough portion and we felt that the 2 minutes recomended cooking time was to long.
  3. More chocolate taste and chocolate bits!

Thanks

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridgey comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
Ds (age 5) hates porridge and I really hoped that with it being chocolate he would like this porridge as getting a warm breakfast into him would be a really bonus but unfortunately he took one bite and told me he did not like it. Dd (18 months) loved it. Dh tried a little and said it tasted of really cheap chocolate so he would not like to get it again.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
I like that it has no added salt and that it contains less sugar then other cereals.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why? We all really liked the packaging and we've been shopping since receiving the porridge and the box really does stand out amongst the other porridges. The best part for me was the sachets with the fill line to easily measure out the milk. It just makes things easier and quicker for me when I am in a rush (which I always seem to be in the mornings)

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
I sadly don't think anything will make ds like porridge I notice that you also do this porridge in blueberry and honey so we might try one of those flavours but I'm afraid the chocolate flavour did not go down well.
