  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

He saw that it was 'chocolate' but after a few spoons of it, pushed it away. DD (who is 16 months) was clambering for it only because her brother was having it, so we made another one and she ate 1 spoon. so I ended up eating 2 bowls Hmm - the texture was ok, the smell was weird (looked like choc but wasn't). Tasted quite artificial to be honest. Appearance wasn't the most appetising.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

Sorry, but I can't really see any benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge. The children don't like the taste and the preparation takes the same time as any other ready oats. Don't think I'll buy it.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

DS who is nearly 4 loved the look of the box and immediately wanted to open it. He wanted it for dinner (we opened the box when we got back from work). He was most taken by the bear/cuteness of the packaging. Thrilled by the individual packaging and the pouring of milk into the packet (although that was an accident waiting to happen since we use the big 4 pints of milk!).

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Make it more 'real'!?!! and tasty. it just tasted quite artificial to be honest. I'm not sure what to do with the rest of the packs!!

kasbah72 · 16/02/2012 15:08

Still no package here either!

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
We were really looking forward to trying this but unfortunately it has not gone down very well. DS(5) had a couple of mouthfuls then refused to eat more, he said it tasted "funny" and definitely not of chocolate. DD(3) did not like it either, she ate approx half the portion but then decided it was "yuck". I convinced DH to try it who said it was "okay" but preferred our current cereals. I tried it but I did not like the taste, not chocolatey enough to be called chocolate flavoured in my opinion.
  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
The main benefit but would be my children having a warm breakfast, particularly on these cold mornings. I would not buy the product again though as unfortunately neither of them liked it.
  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
Both children loved the box with the bear on, if looking for porridge to buy I believe this box would stand out and be appealing to young children. I did like the individual sachets but I would normally buy a normal box as I feel I tend to get better value for money than sachets. We tried the pouring the milk into the bag, I thought this was very fiddly and the consistency was not very good so I just warmed a smaller amount up in a cup for the next attempt.
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s).
The only idea I had would be to make it have a more chocolate taste, I guess you are trying to keep additives and sugar to a minimum but currently it is not a very pleasant taste.

Thank you very much Mumsnet for the opportunity to trial this product.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DS is not yet vocal enough to express an opinion, but we shared the chocolate porridge together, and he was happy enough to eat it. The texture is great for young children - it's smoother and less lumpy than some brands of porridge.

I found it gave off a very strange smell - a bit plasticy/play doughy.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

A filling hot breakfast - great for extra energy, particularly in the winter months. Full of healthy whole grain.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

Loved the bear on the box - a lovely design. I find individual portions tedious. I prefer loose cereal/porridge so that I can adapt portion sizes to the appetite of the recipient. The portion size is way too small for me, but too big for DS.

Measuring milk in a paper bag is messy.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Recipes on the box - flapjacks or brownies you could make with the oats.

Ds1 is 5yrs old,nearly 6.
Ds2 is 3.5yrs old.

  1. ds1 liked it. He was keen to try it and said it was yummy. Ds2 would not try it. He loves porridge but offered it a few times but he didn't want it. He also said he didn't want any when I made a bowl and offered it.

2.benefits would be that porridge is wholesome and filling. A warm breakfast in the winter is perfect start to the school day, knowing they have something good in their tummys. The choc flavour may encourage those children who do not normally eat/like porridge to eat it.

3.both boys liked the box, it is easily noticeable in the supermarket.

sachets are convenient.

4.I did not like the flavour. Maybe as an adult I am used to things being sweeter or more flavoursome. But I did not like the flavour of the porridge.
Ds1 liked it however. I have the various flavour adult oatsosimple sachets at work. Why not make these for kids too? Children don't just eat chocolate!

Thanks for the opportunity to try this product. I don't think we would buy it though.

MandyT68 · 16/02/2012 17:58

The porridge cooked fine in the microwave. I quite liked the package as a measure but it is too flimsy and milk went everywhere. We ended up finding out the measurement and using a jug. The texture was good but the colour was not very chocolates and it didn't tasted chocolate. Dd said it was too sweet and didn't taste of anything except sugar and Ds said it was tasteless but too sweet. I am not sure of the advantage over a bag of porridge with a spoonful of drinking chocolate powder stirred in or even a square of dark chocolate.
The packaging was very appealing and the box was easy to open but why, when open, is the bear lying on his side? It opens the wrong way to be like a cereal box. Also, some debate - was it a bear? Husband suggested a chocolate beaver but that thrilled no one! Wouldn't buy again and my two love porridge and eat it fairly often but it is as easy, just as convenient, and tastier to make your own to suit individual tastes. Put half quantity of porridge to Millie water in the microwave and leave for two minutes. Add sugar and chocolate etc to taste. Sorry. We so wanted to be impressed. One other thing. The box appeals to children but this might put off older children. My son is too old for bears and he said the portions were too small.

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
4YO DS was underwhelmed. He was excited about the idea of chocolate porridge but to him porridge is ready brek so he didn't like the texture. I don't think it was dark enough brown to convince him of the chocolateyness. He did try it, but didn't like it much and left 3/4 of the bowl. Baby Goo is only 1 and I didn't want to give it to her.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
I wouldn't buy it again. I have bought the porrdge sachets before, for me to have at work. I did not like the chocolate flavour so would not choose that one again.
I liked the idea of it, to get DS to have a hot breakfast, and wean him off a coco pops phase. But he prefers weetabix and ready brek to this. I do put a squeeze of syrup or honey into his ready brek but he will eat weetabix as they are. I actually let him have choc weetabix, but he chooses the ordinary kind.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
I liked the packaging, I thought it was attractive and I understood the muted tones were meant to make me think it was wholesome.
The sachet measuring thing for the milk doesn't work IMO I needed to add milk, and that threw the timing out on the microwave.
The sachets are good for me to take to work, but a bit pointless on a children's cereal.

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
Mine doesn't like the oaty texture. This is because he is used to ready brek and weetabix. He doesn't like things with bits in. I remember that being a child I didn't either. I think liking texture comes with age :)

northernmonkey · 16/02/2012 18:43

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
2 out of 3 of them loved it! Ds1's (11)words were "The best porridge EVER" Dd (8) said "That was Yummy" Ds2 (5) didn't like it. Dd and ds2 both helped cook it, they loved how easy it was too make and dd (who is not the greatest reader) found the instructions on the individual packets easy to understand. Ds2 was very excited about trying it. He loved the packaging and the smell, but when he tasted it, he wanted to put more chocolate in it.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product? As I said above, it was very easy to make. Even the dc's cooked it! The fact that it had the milk measuring line was very easy too. It filled them up well, to the point that ds1 (who eats for England) didnt ask for snacks for a while! Taking all this into consideration, I will definatly be buying it again.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
We all loved the packaging, reminded us of the three bears story :) The fact that the individual packets were weighed out was a bonus too.

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
I honestly dont think Quaker can do much more. We are a fan of the Oat So Simple range in this house anyway, and ds2 managed to eat more of his porridge by adding a dollop of nutella Blush

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

Both DDs enjoyed the porridge and left me with 2 clean bowls at breakfast time. They didn't really comment on any of the above, but did say they'd like it again

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

To be honest, the benefits for us are minimal. I made 2 sachets up on the hob. It didn't take 2 minutes to thicken, it took quite a while longer than that, and making real porridge seems a lot less faff than having to boil the milk first. It wouldn't save me any time in the mornings so I don't think it'd be worth paying the extra for. I do like the fact that it's a lower sugar chocolate cereal though, so I'd consider buying it if it was on a good special offer at the shops - I know my DDs like that sort of thing!

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
We all liked the packaging. `It's obvious from the colour that it's a chocolate flavoured cereal and the monster is quite fun. The sachets are't very exciting to look at and I must admit that I didn't even read the text on them so didn't know you could measure the milk in the sachet until I read a few posts in this thread.
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
My older DD loves facts and jokes, so if you print as many of these as possible on the box, sachets, or even in a leaflet form inside the box, she'd be over the moon
northernmonkey · 16/02/2012 19:09

Oooo I agree with what somebody said up the thread too maybe they could add some trivia facts
have to admit, my dcs love doing the puzzles, Qs and As and jokes on packaging. It keeps them sat at the table longer too

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
We liked the smell and the texture and we all enjoyed the taste to varying degrees. 10 year old DD was sceptical (she is not that fond of chocolate), but actually to her surprise quite liked the flavour as it was not overpowering. DH really liked it and said he would eat it regularly. 7 year old DS thought it should have ?a bit more flavour to it?.

DH liked it as it did not have any artificial flavour and we all thought that the level of sweetness was just right. It looked exactly as I thought that chocolate porridge would. The first time that my DH cooked it though, he did not set the power on the microwave correctly and the resulting porridge was very ?sloppy?. However, after we resolved our mistake then we had a perfect result every time.

The flavour is not overly chocolately, but I quite liked it as it wasn?t too rich.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
I am keen for the children to eat porridge in the winter as I think that it is a good start to their day, however, they do get bored with it day after day. This is a good alternative, which is attractive to the children without being too unhealthy.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
DD loved the packaging and said that the bear was ?cool? and she liked the writing style. I liked it too and think that the individual sachets make it very easy to prepare. The portion size was just right for an adult ? would possibly be able to share one between 2 children, if they had fruit as well. DD would be able to make it for herself with no problem.

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
My DD thought that she would like porridge with a hint of vanilla and my DH would like see maple & pecan.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
DS (2) refused to eat it. But then there's no reasoning with him as he can't really talk. He's used to cereal and didn't fancy a change it seems. DD (4) was very excited about it because it was chocolatey, she smelled it and said it smelled and looked yummy. She liked the taste.
  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
It is a way of getting porridge into the kids then great, as they won't eat normal porridge. I'm not sure if I'd buy it yet as I'm not sure if it was just the novelty that made DD try it IYSWIM - once said novelty wears off she might not like it. Breakfast for her (and me, TBH!) is more about familiarity.
  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
We love the packaging, it's really cute and makes it instantly clear that it's chocolate. However I wasn't impressed with the "natural flavouring" listed on the ingredients... Nothing specifically against this product, but it bugs me - what does it actually mean?
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
Hmm, not really in terms of making my DCs choose it as I'm the one doing the shopping and choosing. I have a feeling DD might like it more if there was something crunchy in there. I don't know, nuts or something?

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
DD (14 mth) enjoyed it. I gave her half a portion and she wolfed it down. I had the other half and thought it was ok, but not very chocolaty and a bit sweet. When it came out of the sachet it looked like plain oats with a bit of low quality hot chocolate powder.
  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product? I don't think I would buy it. To add to the variety we have for breakfast (although i'm not sure I want to serve chocolate flavour for breakfast - we had it as 'dessert' after dinner)
  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
The milk measuring sachets make it very simple to make up. The box looked fun.
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)? I think fruit flavours would be better for a breakfast cereal.

OK, here we go again! The short version;

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DS2 said it was "nice". DS1 said "It's sweet and not too bitter, like a lot of the chocolate things you buy". (Sorry DS1 for forcing quality chocolate brownies on you!) DD refused to try it, telling me she hates chocolate porridge. This is news to me. Next week she will be fussing because the DSs have eaten it all.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
I like that it is easy to make. My 8yo can make it in the microwave by himself.
  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
We all liked the packaging. The artwork on the box was fresh and attractive. I like the sachets because they mean the DC can make their own breakfast while I lie in bed get ready for work.
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
Maybe make it glittery and advertise it on TV every 5 minutes with a catchy tune? Hmm

I tried some today (DS had made his own and taken it to eat at the garden table) It reminded me of French breakfast products made by Nesquick. I can see why my DC like them. Personally I would like it more chocolaty, but appreciate the product isn't aimed at me. I am curious as to what the "natural flavoring" is.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

my dcs were excited by the packaging and couldnt wait to try it
regarding the texture as i was making two portions at once i must have mis-measured as i keep getting one runny and one thick
they liked the taste but didnt eat it all
they didnt comment on the appearance

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
the benifits for dcs are that there is chocolate porridge available as i normally make porridge in the microwave and add golden syrup after for me the benefit is that its something the children like to eat id buy it as a standby
  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
we all really liked the packaged it looked really fun and appealed to the children

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DS refused point blank to eat it as he didn't like the smell or the look of it, but that is par for the course where he is concerned. Not even the promise of it tasting chocolatey could change his mind, so he's not tested it. DD was a different matter and she ate and liked it a lot. Unfortunately, she's only just two so the best comment from her was "Mmm oclat mummy" but she did say it with a smile on her face so not all bad and she's asked for it again, so thats good!

That left me needing to test it as well. I thought it was smooth and creamy and I liked the texture, but the taste was disappointing - like very weak own brand hot chocolate. I've had better plain porridge with a teaspoon of nutella mixed in, which is how we usually make chocolate porridge in this house.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

Its very simple to make and I could send a sachet with dd if she was staying overnight with her grandparents, but that is about it, to be honest.

The portion size was way too big for a two year old, so we shared a bowl for the days we had it. It also took forever to cool down, so even though it was done in two minutes, it took a good 5 of me blowing on it AND moving it into a cold bowl before she could even think of eating it and even then she kept saying "ot mummy ot" (hot). I'm not keen on stuff that can burn my children's mouth, funnily enough!

Also when preparing it, if I stop it after a minute and stir, its cooked in 1min 50 secs in an 800w microwave. If I don't stir, its still very sloppy after 2 mins and I had to stir and then put in for another 20 seconds.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

Both my DCs thought the look of the outer box was brilliant and we all liked the bear. The individual sachets are great if you want to make the full portion, but its not great that I can't change the portion size when making it for a smaller child. Its a good idea to be able to measure the milk in the sachet, but not that clear whether the line includes it bulging with milk, so a different amount went in each time.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Make it taste more chocolatey! Have something that you can sprinkle on it and give away a free bear shaped bowl with x amount of tokens Grin

Have a smaller child / appetite version so I don't have to either eat it or waste a sachet each time. Have a cool down time.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

The first time I gave it to them they guzzled it all down no problems but since then they have reverted back to normal cereal as they are too imatient to wait for it to cook and then cool down, I am not keen so the remainder will probably be used for flapjack making (sorry)

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I like the idea of the children having porridge oats for breakfast instaed of the same old sugary breakfast cereals as it is more natural and seems to have some nutritional value.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

The children came to blows over who was going to look a the box first (they are easily impressed and very competitive!)
I loved the in-built milk measurer as it is very convenient, however it was a bit of a pain that the sachets are very flimsy so you had to use all of the milk in one go and not save some cold milk to cool the cooked porridge down with- essential for impatient children.
Personally I would have preferred a box of flavoured porridge with a measurer in (a bit like washing powder I suppose) instead of individual portions because that presumes that everyone has the same appetitites.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Mine didn't mind the taste but I do like the idea that other posters have mentioned- sprinkles to put on top, at the end of the day porridge is porridge and NOT particularly interesting

Thanks for letting us test it though

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

They liked the smell of it, and the packaging. They enjoyed the taste, although the elder one said it tasted more of vanilla than chocolate. The portion size seemed to be about right.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

Easy to prepare, no need to get measuring jug etc out.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

My children liked the picture of the bear, and recognised the product from, I assume, TV advertising. I thought the outer box was too large, and I thought the inner wrappers were wasteful in spite of liking the way they allowed me to make porridge without measuring the milk or oats. I don't know if the convenience justifies the extra packaging for me.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

No, they were happy to eat it and liked the packaging.

Ungratefulchild · 16/02/2012 21:24

Ds2 liked it, has eaten it 4 mornings in a row. He loved the packaging and it has inspired him to draw bears on a few cardboard boxes himself.

It's easy to make but a bit runny with the full amount of milk. We eat a lot of porridge so i tried some myself. I thought it was ok but tasted a bit of vanilla. Not really chocolately enough and a bit artificial.

More variety on flavours ie strawberry, banana ...limited editions...competitions to see which flavour children like the most...variety packs of different flavours.

Thank you for letting us try the product...we will probably buy in the future.

turnipvontrapp · 16/02/2012 21:53

My eldest DS (9) just tried it again for his supper and decided he likes it now (nothing like fickle kids!). So shall see what he thinks again in the morning.

He said it is probably just oats and hot chocolate (means the powder) mixed together. Glad he likes it as not managed to get him eating oats until now (except in flapjack).

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

We often have oatmeal, and the texture and appearance of this isn't much different than the any other. They liked the taste, but didn't comment much more on it. It was a too runny with the full amount of milk.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

The low amount of sugar compared to other breakfast cereals is a major reason we buy oatmeal in general and ease of making individual portions for Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge in general.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

No comments on the box or sachets, but I do like the convenience of using the sachet to measure out the milk.

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Maybe little puzzles or nature facts or something similar on the back of the sachets.

  1. My dd had this for her breakfast yesterday and she really enjoyed it, she even asked for a bowl for her supper tonight. She's only 2 so didn't say anything about the taste / texture etc but she did say it's "yummy" and called it "my special porridge".
  1. The main benefits are that it's quick and easy to make, she gets a warm breakfast and extra milk as she normally likes toast and fruit in the morning.
  1. She liked the packaging and recognises the box as her porridge. I liked the sachets at first but I didn't end up following the instructions. I found it better if I put half the milk in first, put in the microwave and then more milk so it wasn't too hot.
  1. I know my dd would like to add things to the porridge herself. Maybe if you could have sachets of chocolate drops or dried banana / apples or raisins. Overall though I would buy this and would try out different flavours. Thanks for letting us try it.
