This month - the Many Faces of Potatoes campaign is offering a £50 Love2Shop voucher to MNers offering a tip or spin on the November recipes - see this link for recipes and info

This thread is for the 15 MNers who are trying out potato recipes for the "Many Faces of Potatoes campaign" over the next few months. Each month they will be sent a new family favourite recipe which can be prepped and on the plate in under 30 minutes. The MNers will add their feedback to this thread.

Below are some questions for the Councillor's to answer each month - please feel free to add additional comments.

If you're not a tester but have any queries feel free to ask and maybe a Councillor will answer, or if not one of the MNet campaign team will.

Please state recipe name (if possible add a link from the above website):

~ How long did it take you to cook the recipe?
~ Did you and your family enjoy the recipe?
~ Will you be cooking it again?
~ Any other general comments about the recipe?

Two more general questions -
~ Since taking part in this activity have you found anything surprising about potatoes that you were unaware of before?
~ Any other general comments about potatoes?

Thanks
MNHQ

I made Bombay Spicy Potatoes yesterday for Dinner and also cooked Tandoori Chicken, Naan Bread and Savoury Rice.
The recipe is in a post above so I won't post that again.

  • Ease of cooking?
Yes very easy to cook
  • Time in which it took you to cook the recipe?
took about 15 minutes preparation time and 25 minutes cooking time as even though I had cut the potatoes quite small it did seem to take longer than 20mins Did you and your family enjoy the recipe? Yes my daughter loved it

-Since taking part in this activity have you found anything surprising about potatoes that you were unaware of before?
No

  • Will you be cooking it again?
Yes
  • Any other comments about the recipe?
Yes, I think it would have been better if the amount of potatoes and onion had been in oz/grammes as everyone's ideas of medium could have been different. Plus I really don't think you had to use Beef stock, veg stock would have done just as well.
  • Any other comments about potatoes in general?
when I first read the recipe and looked at the photograph, I immediately thought that the end product would be too watery due to the amount of liquid required. I had forgotten of course that potatoes are very good at thickening dishes(I use them when making homemade soup to thicken without having to use flour)

Have managed to add some photos of the Chinese Chicken and Potato recipe to my profile (and even managed to get some captions on them after a few tries!).

moomoo1967 · 06/10/2011 11:54

I will add the pics of before and after to my profile once I get home for the Bombay Spiced Potatoes

AnnMumsnet · 06/10/2011 14:20

Were we supposed to takes pictures?

zipzap · 06/10/2011 16:15

No, it didn't mention it. I just did it because I thought it would be interesting to compare how it came out with the picture on the recipe.

and because I love taking pictures and tend to take way too many of everything...

AnnMumsnet · 06/10/2011 18:21

Pictures are good though guys if you want to! Grin

I have just added Photos of the process for the Bombay Potatoes, the reason being is that I am thinking of starting a Cookery/Money Saving blog and wanted to have a practise. Need to think of putting in costs next time. Its the first time I have made my profile public so could someone let me know if they can see it, Ta Smile

I made the chinese chicken and potatoes for dh and me last night (wanted to test run before serving to the dc!)

mindful of previous warnings I:

used the whole jar of hoisin sauce (Waitrose Cook's ingredients one). 4 generous tbspns was about 3/4 of the jar anyway. and didn't want it to end up dry, or the sauce catching, so we added the rest - and put a few drops of oil in the jar to swill round and rinse out.

cut the potatoes quite small (1 -1.5 cam cubes), and left the chicken a bit bigger (2-3cm cubes)

made sure it was a single layer on the baking tray.

It was really lovely Smile. potatoes cooked fine, chicken also. nothing was dry, and the sauce didn't burn at all. it was in for 25 mins, in the middle of the top oven on an aga (so about 200 degrees, I reckon), and came out briliantly. dh loved it too, and if I can source a gf hoisin sauce (dd1 is gf), then I will definitely try it out with them too.
