According to research by Philips, in over 60% of UK households it is women who still do the lion's share of the ironing. On average, women dedicate over an hour a week to ironing compared to 25 minutes for men (40% of men admitted to not ironing at all). With this in mind, Philips has developed a new iron, specifically for men.

Philips say this about their new product "Housed in a robust black outer casing, the new Philips Man Iron exudes masculinity. Unlike any other iron, the appliance boasts a sleek design - resembling that of a premium sports car rather than a conventional iron. The Man Iron is charged to the max with performance-enhancing features to ensure that ironing is quick and simple. With 2,400 watts of power and a scratchproof soleplate, the Philips Man Iron is expertly crafted using the toughest, most durable materials to produce a practically unbreakable tool that can meet the toughest ironing challenges, delivering effortless results in minimum time with minimum fuss."

Philips wants to find 30 Mumsnetters who currently have an ironing-averse man in their life - this could be a DH, DP or DS about to start work or go to uni, to take part in a product test on Mumsnet.

Of course, we know that in many MN households, tasks such as ironing are shared or that one party is happy to undertake the task (or even pay for it to be done by someone else Grin). But if you get lumbered with the ironing pile and could do with a new iron to 'encourage' other household members to do their share then this is the test for you!

If you are selected to take part, you will be sent the Philips Man Iron - which is retailing at £60 - which will be yours to keep. All we ask if that your DH/DP/DS etc tries the iron and we ask that you/they add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet about how they got on with it.

Each tester will be sent a link to a video featuring Andrew Martin, author of How to Get Things Really Flat: A Man's Guide to Ironing, Dusting and Other Household Arts, who will give tips on ironing for men (even if you're an expert you may pick up some tips!).

In addition, everyone who takes part and adds their feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky winner will get £100.

To apply to take part please add your details here. We're sorry but this test is only available to UK residents.

Thanks and good luck

Although it's really only a black (sexed-up) iron it just might encourage a few reluctant ironers. Man iron is quite an inspired title I think so I'll forgive its innate sexism.

poppyandsneeze · 12/08/2011 06:12

Have entered my details to,my dh never does the ironing and leaves that job to me. I currently have a pile of ironing waiting for me to get through !! it would be nice to have some help !!!

tjacksonpfc · 12/08/2011 07:18

Ive entered might make dp see that men are allowed to touch an iron to do his works clothes aswell.

QueenOfFeckingEverything · 12/08/2011 08:16

See in my house the words 'What do you think I am - your personal servant? Iron your own clothes you lazy arse' would have the same effect without the need to spend £60 Grin

Bumperlicious · 12/08/2011 09:09

People, people, people, how much ironing do you all need to do? I can't think of a time that I got the iron out in the last year and I am not generally a crumpled heap. Can you not see that these companies are conning us into thinking that we need everything from our bedsheets to our knickers freshly pressed? Free yourself from the shackles of domesticity. Don't bother with ironing. Don't get DH to do it with a souped up electric appliance. Let him use the time he could have spent ironing to take the kids to the park while you sit down and mumsnet.

bloodymumps · 12/08/2011 09:49

DP ironed my stuff once.
i challenged him as to whether he actually had switched on the iron as it was so creased- perhaps its due to the pink hue of the iron that he feels emasculated!!!
Would love to see if a 'man' iron makes a difference- he is a sucker for toiletry ranges in the same way!

MonsterBookOfTysons · 12/08/2011 11:21

When I moved at the beginning of may, I found 3 new irons that had obviously forgotton i'd bought Blush They are all morrisons value ones, I would like to see if spending more money on an iron will actually get creases out, currently i feel like i am just warming the clothes up Grin

SchrodingersMew · 12/08/2011 13:44

Bumper I like my bedsheets and knickers pressed. :) Even my pillow cases!

nickelbabe · 12/08/2011 13:51

Mew - you're quite odd Wink

I know people like that too.
it's just weird Grin

mrsgordonfreeman · 12/08/2011 14:03

Oh, yes, please, since having dd we have such a crumpled house. DH was brought up to believe ironing was the work of the devil's own pixies and refuses to do it. So it doesn't get done and he goes to meetings with curled collars and rumpled sleeves.

I also missed out on the Philips steam generator iron test due to being stuck in the US after the volcano erupted last year... and I'm still quietly, desperately crumpled.

Bumperlicious · 12/08/2011 14:09

Life's too short to iron is my moto!

Snorbs · 12/08/2011 14:47

A Man Iron for Manly Men. FFS. Hmm

I look forward to mumsnet promoting pink toolsets to encourage women to do DIY.

BTW, I'm a man who irons. I am genuinely struggling to recall what colour my iron is as it doesn't bloody matter.

moonbells · 12/08/2011 15:17

What's ironing?

I think the last time I ironed anything was... oh, can't remember*. My mother hated it too and used to bribe me in school holidays to do it.

DH irons more than me, admittedly only the odd shirt. Most of the time he hangs them on coat hangers to dry and then just puts them back on. We agreed when we first got together that anyone who wanted anything ironing could jolly well do it themselves.

Of course with DS approaching school age, there may be ironing arguments in our future because he certainly won't be able to safely do it. But for now...

*probably one of my linen skirts. Wish they'd magically iron themselves and STAY ironed!

WhipMeIndiana · 12/08/2011 16:31

I did think my iron looked a little forlorn today. and a shiny black one would match the lounge...

noddyholder · 12/08/2011 16:40

Well we don't iron but if ds suddenly felt the urge I would not be buying into any bloody male stereotypes with one of those and he could use the house iron like me!

MadameCastafiore · 12/08/2011 18:31

When I bought my new iron home DH commented - but it's fucking purple - I would love to wrap it up for him and say I have bought him a present - a MANIRON!!!!

HA HA!!

No excuses matey!!

(from a gimmick lover extroadinaire!!)

TrillianAstra · 12/08/2011 18:35

This is incredibly patronising.

Indith · 12/08/2011 18:38

So the man ironing has lots of features to make ironing easier and quicker. Are irons for women made to be difficult to use and make ironing more difficult and slower? We have an iron. It is pretty generic, there is nothing about it that screams "girl", there is no pink, no glitter and it does not have flowers all over it. Dh irons all his own work shirts because he has 2 arms just like me and is perfectly capable of doing it.

Indith · 12/08/2011 18:47

What would be useful though is an iron with some sort of guard on the front to stop completely inept men like my dh from burning themselves. Dh lifts the iron into the air with one hand then with his other arm reaches in the iron direction to pull his shirt up the ironing board to do the rest and he always, always catches his arm on the iron. The man has a line of scars up his arm Hmm. I'd suggest he was trying to make me decide it would be safer to do it for him but he is similarly inept with knives and he adores cooking.

tjacksonpfc · 12/08/2011 19:02

Just an added thought when does this close and when do people find out if they have been choosen as got a holiday coming up.

TheMagnificentBathykolpian · 12/08/2011 19:05

I don't care what they call it! I hope I get one cos I need a new iron Grin

Mine is obviously a style critic cos it burns items it doesn't like the look of Sad

SchrodingersMew · 12/08/2011 19:22

I bet everyone who has complained about this or called it sexist entered...

Bumperlicious · 12/08/2011 19:36

Why would they if they just complained about?

ChrisPBacon · 12/08/2011 19:45

@ mew

Er, no. Grin

QueenOfFeckingEverything · 12/08/2011 19:50

Nope, I haven't entered.
