According to research by Philips, in over 60% of UK households it is women who still do the lion's share of the ironing. On average, women dedicate over an hour a week to ironing compared to 25 minutes for men (40% of men admitted to not ironing at all). With this in mind, Philips has developed a new iron, specifically for men.

Philips say this about their new product "Housed in a robust black outer casing, the new Philips Man Iron exudes masculinity. Unlike any other iron, the appliance boasts a sleek design - resembling that of a premium sports car rather than a conventional iron. The Man Iron is charged to the max with performance-enhancing features to ensure that ironing is quick and simple. With 2,400 watts of power and a scratchproof soleplate, the Philips Man Iron is expertly crafted using the toughest, most durable materials to produce a practically unbreakable tool that can meet the toughest ironing challenges, delivering effortless results in minimum time with minimum fuss."

Philips wants to find 30 Mumsnetters who currently have an ironing-averse man in their life - this could be a DH, DP or DS about to start work or go to uni, to take part in a product test on Mumsnet.

Of course, we know that in many MN households, tasks such as ironing are shared or that one party is happy to undertake the task (or even pay for it to be done by someone else Grin). But if you get lumbered with the ironing pile and could do with a new iron to 'encourage' other household members to do their share then this is the test for you!

If you are selected to take part, you will be sent the Philips Man Iron - which is retailing at £60 - which will be yours to keep. All we ask if that your DH/DP/DS etc tries the iron and we ask that you/they add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet about how they got on with it.

Each tester will be sent a link to a video featuring Andrew Martin, author of How to Get Things Really Flat: A Man's Guide to Ironing, Dusting and Other Household Arts, who will give tips on ironing for men (even if you're an expert you may pick up some tips!).

In addition, everyone who takes part and adds their feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky winner will get £100.

To apply to take part please add your details here. We're sorry but this test is only available to UK residents.

Thanks and good luck

Done!Hopefully I get one:)I would love to have man iron, there will be no more excuses that ironing is one of my duty....Husband do it much better but so rare...

ouryve · 11/08/2011 12:03

I want a man iron. I hate girly stuff. :o

Silly idea, but our iron is getting old, so I'm willing to play.

LtEveDallas · 11/08/2011 12:27

Oh dear God please. (yes I know it's sexist, yes I know I shouldn't put up with this twaddle, yes I completely agree...but if I tell DH he we are getting something for nothing as long as he tries it out, maybe, just maybe I can stop being the ironing fairy)

WibbleBoy · 11/08/2011 12:51

As Yve says, she's not a Girly Girl at all. She'd love this, especially if it had a V8 ;)

JetLi · 11/08/2011 13:00

Oooh I love this idea - irons for blokes. My DP turns the vacuum off and then waits for some kind of medal!

My BIL does all the ironing for their family. He has an MP3 player & some good headphones, a decent iron & ironing board & he just locks himself away from the family and ploughs through the lot.

nickelbabe · 11/08/2011 13:33

our iron is really old, too.
I've applied Grin

currently, the only thing DH will iron is his surplice (and only because I make him!)
we have two ironing boards, so we put his surplice on one, and mine on the other. I iron a bit to show him, then he irons a bit of his!

it's like a sodding game (and his surplice is more complicated than mine!)

CasaBevron · 11/08/2011 14:04

Might be useful here.

Timpson · 11/08/2011 14:16

I have never heard anything so condescending, sexist and ridiculous in my life.

Badly done MN, badly done.

CakeandRoses · 11/08/2011 14:27

yy, I agree timpson - didn't think this would be Mumsnet's style

i reckon you should at least hold out for the pink ironing board to complete the set hippy Wink

southeastastra · 11/08/2011 14:32

were you all up in arms when they introduced pink power tools?

(if we were i apologise Grin)

Timpson · 11/08/2011 14:41

Well i was SEA if that helps - again - condescending, sexist and ridiculous....

gallicgirl · 11/08/2011 14:55

Don't think my DP is stupid enough to use an iron simply because it's black.

If it played Elvis songs while he ironed, it might be a goer but a bit of sexist marketing isn't going to work.

Merrylegs · 11/08/2011 15:03

I mentioned the MANIRON (it just has to be in caps, doesn't it?) to DH as he was ironing his shirt this morning.

His response?

"Brilliant! Is it designed by Apple?"

Hmm
gallicgirl · 11/08/2011 15:13
Grin

That would be the other option - sync the iron to DPs i-pod and he might use it once in a while for novelty value.

So might I, for that matter.

DirtyMartini · 11/08/2011 15:43

Yep, I thought and still think that the pink power tools/garden implements/whatever thing is massively irritating and stupid too.

WhipMeIndiana · 11/08/2011 16:36

should be a wii ironing game

his n hers surplices, nickelbabe?

WhipMeIndiana · 11/08/2011 16:37

dirtymartini =- i dont get why they make gardening tools green!! so you lose the feckers in the long grass!

they all should be orange or red.

DH wants to know what horse power it has, and if it runs on petrol or diesel.

nickelbabe · 11/08/2011 17:21

Indiana - no, sorry! Grin

he's got a choirmaster/organist's surplice, and mine is a bog standard chorister's one.
his doesn't meet at the front armholes (means he can wave his arms about)

HuwEdwards · 11/08/2011 18:24

My DP (a man) does all laundry - he doesn't find it necessary to have a specific iron, or washing machine.

How ridiculous!

SchrodingersMew · 11/08/2011 22:27

I've never seen my DP iron... or hoover or do much cleaning at all for that matter. Angry

Hoping for this to try and encourage him as DS will be born in 5 weeks, I'm hoping to bf and am not going to want to iron much!

ilovesprouts · 11/08/2011 22:40

done !

SchrodingersMew · 11/08/2011 22:44

In fact, adding to my comment he doesn't actually know how to work a washing machine!!

ChrisPBacon · 12/08/2011 00:18

I think I have the real demographic for this product.
This is for gay guys isn't it?
My former landlord would have killed for something like this, he was a ninja ironer.

Sorry Philips, you've gone fore the wrong site from the off.
