NOW CLOSED Does the ironing cause creased brows in your household? Want to get your DP or older/teenage DS doing more ironing? Take part in the Philips Man Iron Product Test

According to research by Philips, in over 60% of UK households it is women who still do the lion's share of the ironing. On average, women dedicate over an hour a week to ironing compared to 25 minutes for men (40% of men admitted to not ironing at all). With this in mind, Philips has developed a new iron, specifically for men.

Philips say this about their new product "Housed in a robust black outer casing, the new Philips Man Iron exudes masculinity. Unlike any other iron, the appliance boasts a sleek design - resembling that of a premium sports car rather than a conventional iron. The Man Iron is charged to the max with performance-enhancing features to ensure that ironing is quick and simple. With 2,400 watts of power and a scratchproof soleplate, the Philips Man Iron is expertly crafted using the toughest, most durable materials to produce a practically unbreakable tool that can meet the toughest ironing challenges, delivering effortless results in minimum time with minimum fuss."

Philips wants to find 30 Mumsnetters who currently have an ironing-averse man in their life - this could be a DH, DP or DS about to start work or go to uni, to take part in a product test on Mumsnet.

Of course, we know that in many MN households, tasks such as ironing are shared or that one party is happy to undertake the task (or even pay for it to be done by someone else Grin). But if you get lumbered with the ironing pile and could do with a new iron to 'encourage' other household members to do their share then this is the test for you!

If you are selected to take part, you will be sent the Philips Man Iron - which is retailing at £60 - which will be yours to keep. All we ask if that your DH/DP/DS etc tries the iron and we ask that you/they add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet about how they got on with it.

Each tester will be sent a link to a video featuring Andrew Martin, author of How to Get Things Really Flat: A Man's Guide to Ironing, Dusting and Other Household Arts, who will give tips on ironing for men (even if you're an expert you may pick up some tips!).

In addition, everyone who takes part and adds their feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky winner will get £100.

To apply to take part please add your details here. We're sorry but this test is only available to UK residents.

Thanks and good luck

Grin oooh I quite fancy a test of this little thingummy bob .. will be another 'gadget' for DH to scratch his head over, if it makes him iron more happily it's gotta be worth a try

The3Bears · 10/08/2011 21:27

Would love this I spend way too much time ironing :)

stitchthis · 10/08/2011 21:35

Ffs!!

nocake · 10/08/2011 21:41

I'm an Ironman (that's Ironman triathlon) and an ironing man but not sure why I'd need an iron designed for men. The one I've got seems to work quite well with a male operator.

sockpoppet · 10/08/2011 21:45

This is rubbish. I'd expect better from you MNHQ.

Ilythia · 10/08/2011 21:54

What Queen said. This is a ridiculous, offensive idea. It's the equivalent of painting a razer pink and saying it's for girls. Only worse.

Merrylegs · 10/08/2011 21:54

"Unlike any other iron, the appliance boasts a sleek design - resembling that of a premium sports car rather than a conventional iron:"

pahahaha -

Can just imagine the Jeremy Clarkson voice-over - "This iron. Is probably the fastest iron. IN THE WORLD."

Applauds. This is too funny Grin

QueenOfFeckingEverything · 10/08/2011 22:07

TurboToilet anyone??

WhipMeIndiana · 10/08/2011 22:44

this product is getting a mixed reaction from the MN massive Grin

WhipMeIndiana · 10/08/2011 22:46

turbotoilet. dh is nodding thoughtfully at that...

WhipMeIndiana · 10/08/2011 22:47

i would like some man pegs to go with, so the lazy sod'll hang out the washing too?

KatyMac · 10/08/2011 22:51

Umm I haven't ironed in 19 years

Don't do much washing either

DH sorts the washing, washes it, hangs it out (on hanger to reduce ironing), irons it

It then appears magically in my draw/wardrobe some days after I drop it on the bathroom floor

He also dusts, hoovers, washes dishes, shops & is very good in bed

Why would I need to change any of this?

Valpollicella · 10/08/2011 23:07

Brilliant.

Can the design team extend their skills to a Man Sink for the washing up, and a Man Toilet Brush (what would that look like?)

C'mon you frustrated product designers....do your worst best

HerRoyalNotness · 11/08/2011 01:44

No, no, this is perfect. There are millions of women who get appliances as gifts from their partners, now the tables are turned.

"Oh sorry DH, you wanted a new driver for our anniversary? I got you a MAN iron instead"

violetwellies · 11/08/2011 02:08

Couldnt agree more I have received a domestic appliance for a birthday present. I am also the only one in the house to iron. If only to have the opportunity to show the baby what a man ironing looks like please may I (dp) have one?

HippyHippopotamus · 11/08/2011 07:29

I'm astounded! Are the non-ironing men going to suddenly start ironing because its called a 'man iron'?

To the poster re the razors.. Yyy! And have you noticed that the pink ones are more expensive than the orange ones?!!

HippyHippopotamus · 11/08/2011 07:30

Oh and forgot to say, my husband is the only one who uses our 'woman' iron

kittensliveupstairs · 11/08/2011 07:37

DH is happily pressing his work shirts with a lady iron. It is purple and turquoise as far as I remember.
What a load of old cobblers. Man iron indeed [wanders off muttering]

kat200 · 11/08/2011 08:22

yes please i would i find if men have something resembles a car it will make my jobs much easier if he took that job off list

CakeandRoses · 11/08/2011 08:24

Wow! A product which manages to insult both genders, is bloody ridiculous, and irons! Impressive.

If I man refuses to iron because he think it's 'woman's work' or somesuch twaddle then it'll take more than a fecking grey iron to change that idiotic mindset < foresees women up and down the country using this bloody iron themselves as their man still refuses to iron >

CakeandRoses · 11/08/2011 08:42

Oh sorry, it's in uber-manly black, not grey

this iron has really annoyed me actually. In our household, dh does all the ironing (I hate ironing and do plenty of other things instead), I'm now imagining the situation of dh buying me a barbie-pink iron thinking that would make me more likely to iron. not at all insulting, eh? Hmm

TimeWasting · 11/08/2011 09:24

What rot. Just don't iron their stuff.

HippyHippopotamus · 11/08/2011 09:27

ooh CakesandRoses have you seen a barbie-pink one for sale? I'd absolutely love one not And yes, it would completely encourage me to iron, especially if it was the same barbie-pink as my nail varnish and lipstick Grin

Bonsoir · 11/08/2011 10:01

I want the book and the iron so much I am going to order them (not being eligible for the product test!). DSS2's birthday is coming up!!!

Cattleprod · 11/08/2011 10:40

This is what it looks like, if anyone is interested. Looks like every other iron to me, just black.

Although the article is dated May 2010, and now in Aug 11 they are still calling it a 'new' product!!
