1. Overall, how did you find the Dettol No-Touch Hand Wash system to use? What did you like best about it / did you enjoy using it)? What didn't you like, and why?
It was OK but can't get really excited about it. Not particularly nice to look at, fun novelty value for the kids but didn't like the soap it dispensed, which was overly sticky and difficult to wash off, particularly for the children. The non-cucumber soap in particular had a very strong smell that lingered around whoever had washed their hands in it that smelt of cheap washing powder.
2. What did your child(ren) think of the hand wash system? What did they like/dislike?
They liked it. Unfortunately this meant they used it over and over to see it work so hopefully this novelty will wear off and once they are used to it they would only use it once each time they needed to! However they were very quick to work out how it was used.
3. Did having the system make your child(ren) wash their hands more regularly and encourage more healthy habits, giving you peace of mind? If so, why? If not, why not?
They are already pretty good at hand washing so whilst they liked using it they also like using the ordinary hand wash soap pumps. The amount pumped out is a lot for little hands so if anything it gave me more worries if they used it as they didn't really wash it off properly (particularly if using more than one pump dose given the novelty!) but even the right amount was tricky for them and then the taps and towels ended up with lots of slimy soap residue on them.
4. Similarly, do you think you washed your hands any more often, more thoroughly or more willingly as a result of having the system? If so, when did you find yourself doing this when you might not have done before - eg cooking, cleaning, gardening?
If I need to wash my hands I need to wash my hands - having an automatic pump dispenser isn't going to change that or make me do it more than I do already. And even if the pump dispenses automatically I don't yet have taps that turn on & off automatically, in fact they are ones that I can't even knock with my elbows so the taps still have all the germs etc on that you are touting that you miss when you use this product.
Plus using the antibacterial one in particular made my hands itchy and dry if I used it more than a couple of times a day so would be less likely to use it if anything.
5. Where did you put your two hand wash systems? Did they fit well where you put them or not? Were they easy or difficult to set up and use? Did you prefer the white or stainless steel finish?
White has gone in the children's bathroom, stainless steel in the downstairs loo. have put them on the sink but it's not completely flat (integrated dips for soap) so not completely steady.
Was surprised that more thought hadn't gone into the design of the bottom of the bottle that is on display at the top of the dispenser when in use - you just see the ugly bottle and bit of the design that is aimed at being the right way up and shouting 'buy me' from the shop shelf. Should have been possible to create a design that worked well whether it was on the shelf or in the dispenser - you know that that bottle has to be used in it and yet it seems very much that nobody has considered the two as a finished unit when in use.
Relatively easy to set up, was surprised that they both needed slightly different set up (one had batteries already in, the other didn't for example. And it wasn't clear which was on and which was off - You marked the on/off switch in the blurb, but until the batteries went in and something happened (or not) I wasn't sure if they were automatically going to be switched on or off. I know that the I and O are supposed to be international standard symbols but I can think of a couple of logical explanations for each one to be both on and off so can't even work it out from first principles!
Probably preferred the white finish as the stainless steel finish wasn't actually stainless steel but looked like wannabe steel but actually cheap silvery plastic. At least the white one is honest about being plastic!
6. If you were previously concerned about (or at least aware of) germs in your home, do you think that having the system has reassured you or not? Why?
Didn't reassure me as I am more worried about the germs being transferred to the taps that then get touched once you have washed your hands thereby transferring the germs back to you.
I also worry about the increase in germs as a result of hands (especially kids) not washing the soap off properly and whether or not this means they have left germs on their hands and/or the residue transfers to taps, towels, clothing, toys etc and then makes those things dirty and ultimately more germy and dirty as a result.
And of course I worry about germs becoming stronger and more difficult to kill with an overuse of antibacterial products when really not necessary. There aren't many occasions that I wash my hands that I feel I really need an antibacterial soap.
7. What did you think of the antibacterial hand soap? Did you like the fragrance of it or not? How does it compare with other hand washes? Which fragrance did you like best?
Horrid - smells like very concentrated, very cheap washing powder for clothes. Smell lingers around after using it for quite a while and is unpleasant. Also made my hands itch and crack. Cucumber one didn't smell too bad but still was sticky and difficult to wash off like the antibac one. And also made my hands itchy and cracked if I used it too much. And seemed to get used up very quickly.
Didn't compare well with my favourite (any Korres handwash) which is just for special occasions or my regular - carex gentle handwash (assorted fragrances). I use the carex one as my regular one (despite not liking the fact that it is antibacterial) as it is the only one everyday one I have found in high street shops that doesn't make my hands dry, cracked and itchy.
8. Overall, do you think that having the hand wash system has made life (at least a bit) easier or not? And why?
It over-complicates a problem and doesn't really come up with the right solution - if you are that worried about dirty soap pump tops then you would also be worried about dirty taps which this does nothing to help.
It does help little ones who are sometimes prone to battling and losing against a standard soap pump bottle, particularly when the surface it has to sit on isn't flat.
I'd prefer to be able to set the dose size to be more relevant to the kids - and me do a double pump than them to pump out an adult dose each time.
9. If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend the Dettol No-Touch Hand Wash System to your friends with children? If so, why? If not, why not?
Probably not for the reasons given above in Q8. Plus it would be expensive to run in terms of soap and increased hand cream needed to counteract the drying effects on the skin.
It's not particularly nice to look at although you can see that somebody has tried to make it look nice and failed (which is almost worse that looking bad to start with). However if it is aimed at kids then why not make a kids version - would probably make it look better than it currently is and even if it didn't go perfectly in a bathroom/kitchen setting it would look better overall as it would look like a nice extra added in for the kids rather than something trying and failing to be nice design in the bathroom. And if you were to design a kids version you could look at the design of the bottle and dispenser together plus how the graphics work on the bottle both on the shelf and in the dispenser.
