(My set up is: 2 kids, one just at school and one toddler; quite an active lifestyle and a few pets. Clean and healthy but not remotely germ-phobic! Have been using product for approx 1 week, in place of 'regular' pump-action hand soaps.)
1. Overall, how did you find the Dettol No-Touch Hand Wash system to use? What did you like best about it / did you enjoy using it)? What didn't you like, and why?
- The soaps were extremely easy to set up and use/explain to the kids.
- Proved a talking point (amongst visiting 5 yr olds)
- I hated the clamshell packaging - hard to remove and uses wasteful materials IMHO.
- I did not like the aesthetics - that the top of the soap poked out, and that the top of the dispenser cut though the logo and the imagery. Sorry Dettol, but I think this is poor graphic design!
- A bit over-sensitve. The one in the kitchen splodged a couple of times when I was working at the sink.
- I think too much soap is dispensed per dose. More, I am sure than with standard pumps. This, coupled with the price of the refills makes it a very expensive option.
- Disliked the gimmickry of it, actually. True, you don't get the soap itself dirty, but you DO still need to touch the door handle and then the taps with your dirty hands... And those could possibly be touched without handwashing, whereas by default soap is only touched when handwashing so I really can't see this product making any discernable difference. Dettol, I do really think you have addressed a problem that does not actually exist in real life.
2. What did your child(ren) think of the hand wash system? What did they like/dislike?
They LOVED IT, as many seemed to above, christened it the magic soap. Quite simply, they enjoyed the fact that you moved your hand and the soap magically came out; so much so that the 2 year old played with it a couple of times (grrr), releasing soap on to the floor...
3. Did having the system make your child(ren) wash their hands more regularly and encourage more healthy habits, giving you peace of mind? If so, why? If not, why not?
I think they probably washed their hands slightly more often. The 5 year old usually has to be reminded to wash her hands after going to the loo; with this, she did it voluntarily. At other times, (eg after getting mucky) she would more willingly wash her hands, she needed less encouragement/nagging. However, I am not sure that the novelty would not soon wear off. I Apart from the 1st day, I did not notice any increase in the frequency of handwashing.
The 2 year old only washes his hands if I am with him. No change in behaviour (apart from mentioned above), but he too seemed to like the novelty.
4. Similarly, do you think you washed your hands any more often, more thoroughly or more willingly as a result of having the system? If so, when did you find yourself doing this when you might not have done before - eg cooking, cleaning, gardening?
No, I did not wash my hands more often.
5. Where did you put your two hand wash systems? Did they fit well where you put them or not? Were they easy or difficult to set up and use? Did you prefer the white or stainless steel finish?
The stainless steel one went at kitchen sink; the white in the downstairs loo. Unfortunately the footprint of the No-Touch is larger than that of 'normal' hand soap and it did not fit at my cloakroom sink, so it had ot go on the (low) window ledge.
Very easy to set up and use. MUCH preferred the look of the s/steel one., just personal preference.
6. If you were previously concerned about (or at least aware of) germs in your home, do you think that having the system has reassured you or not? Why?
Has made no impact! I am bright enough to understand 'germs' and to judge when to wash my hands and those of my children. I understand the marketing angle but it does not affect me.
7. What did you think of the antibacterial hand soap? Did you like the fragrance of it or not? How does it compare with other hand washes? Which fragrance did you like best?
I think the jury is out on the need for and efficacy of anti-bac products; although again, I understand the marketing angle. My personal preference is to not buy anti-bac soaps, although this is by no means a hard-and-fast rule. I found it very comparable (no better, no worse) than other equivalent products - other Dettol ones, or Palmolive, Sainsbury's own etc etc.
MUCH preferred the cucumber fragrance, as did kids. It smelt fresher, and I think the sweetness of the smell appealed to kids.
8. Overall, do you think that having the hand wash system has made life (at least a bit) easier or not? And why?
It has meant that there is less resistance to handwashing. Less nagging does make life easier and slightly more pleasant in my house. I do slightly suspect that when the novelty wears off, the nagging may have to be resumed.
9. If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend the Dettol No-Touch Hand Wash System to your friends with children? If so, why? If not, why not?
I'd probably sum up the above really, and have done thus far. My conclusion would be that I would NOT recommend the product, due a) to the fact I believe you have tried to sell us - and then solve - a non-issue, that of the dirty soap dispenser; and b) the RRP. C. £3 for 250ml is 3x as much as standard Dettol handwash. Just NOT worth it for me.
Many thanks for the trial, but the increase in price is not worth the slight increase in convenience for me and my family.
