Hello

We’re pleased to announce a webchat on Brexit, the ‘divorce’ agreement, and possible outcomes, with three guests from The UK in a Changing Europe on Tuesday 27 November at 1.30pm.

Professor Jonathan Portes is senior fellow at The UK in a Changing Europe and Professor of Economics and Public Policy in the Department of Political Economy at King's College London. Previously, he was principal research fellow of the National Institute of Economic & Social Research. Before that he was chief economist at the Cabinet Office, and previous to that chief economist at the Department of Work and Pensions.

Professor Catherine Barnard is senior fellow at The UK in a Changing Europe; Professor in European Union Law and Employment Law at the University of Cambridge; and senior tutor and fellow of Trinity College. Catherine specialises in EU law and employment law.

Professor Anand Menon is Director of The UK in a Changing Europe and Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs at Kings College London. He has held positions at Sciences Po, Columbia University and NYU. He has written on many aspects of contemporary Europe and is a frequent commentator on national and international media.

Professors Menon and Barnard joined us before the Brexit referendum in June 2016 - you can check out that webchat here if you fancy refreshing your memory/reliving the heady atmosphere.

Please do join the chat on Tuesday. If you can’t make it, please leave a question here in advance. Do bear in mind the webchat guidelines - one question each (follow-ups allowed if there’s time), and please be polite. Also following recent chats/guest posts we’ve updated our guidelines to let people know that, if one topic is overwhelmingly dominating a discussion with a guest, mods might request that people don't continue to post what's effectively the same question or point. Rest assured we will ALWAYS let guests know that it's an area of concern to multiple users and will encourage them to engage with those questions.

Thanks
MNHQ

Interesting that the three paid experts on the issue had little to add above what we have been saying on the Brexit threads for over two years.

Anybody who thinks that those they elected ever had a clue really should be disabused of that notion now.

So much harm done to the future generations by a selfish few who harried for the vote.

MyNameIsArthur · 27/11/2018 14:46

If we left the EU with No Deal, would we get back all our fishing waters? And if so, what degree of tensions would this escalate between France, for example?

RowanMumsnet · 27/11/2018 14:46

@Moonstorm

Nice to be ignored several times while 'big name' posters get answered several times Hmm

Sorry Moonstorm - not deliberate (there were an awful lot of questions) but sorry to be frustrating

OP posts: Experts' posts:
Moonstorm · 27/11/2018 14:48

I agree. Nothing here hasn’t been said before and people have been warning about this for the past two years.

MyNameIsArthur · 27/11/2018 14:49

Just realised, the experts have gone. Many thanks to them

Moonstorm · 27/11/2018 14:52

Sorry @RowanMumsnet. I think my frustration of the situation is just spilling over Sad

No worries Brew

Honestly i agree moonstorm. They answered my question several times when i would have been satisfied with the one answer as they answered it in one go.

Tiscold · 27/11/2018 14:59

Also i can't seem to find their answer to the question about the north east and scrapping high speed rail etc?

Did they ignore that like the government ignores the working class of the north?

Talkinpeece · 27/11/2018 15:05

Also i can't seem to find their answer to the question about the north east and scrapping high speed rail etc?
But that question has nothing to do with Brexit.
Its an entirely Whitehall decision that can be made before Brexit or after any kind of Brexit.
They were here to answer questions about Brexit.

They answered my question several times when i would have been satisfied with the one answer as they answered it in one go.
If you look, they EACH answered your question in their own way.

Tiscold · 27/11/2018 15:17

Hut practically the same way and same answer. All three saying they're impartial to me when they all work for the same place etc is a waste when one could've answered it and then moved on to other people not waste 6 replies on it.

And the question was brexit related it was relating to the north easts brexit trend and what would happen there if brexit was reversed.

PebbleDashed · 27/11/2018 15:40

You're going to get cross-over issues like that when you get 3 experts aren't you. Not worth getting worried about it. Having 3 experts on helped to get through loads of questions and this has provided some of the most focused and pertinent information on Brexit I've seen. Thanks Mumsnet. I hope it gets shared widely.

CatAndMice · 27/11/2018 15:42

@Tiscold Flowers

CatAndMice · 27/11/2018 15:45

@Tiscold

Posted too soon. As someone who is directly affected by the high speed rail (in a bad way). I would have liked to have an answer to that, too.

CatAndMice · 27/11/2018 15:46

Don’t know where the flowers came from, but feel free to keep them Grin

Tiscold · 27/11/2018 16:07

Why thabk you @CatandMice.

I realise hs2 and heathrow aren't brexit issues but they're in a sense related.

London sees massive investment while the north east with it's traditional manafacturing and warehousing sectors have suffered. This i belive is a reason for the north east voting heavily for brexit.

So the poster had a point if brexot was reversed what wouod the government do to tackle the issues that made people vote for brexit.

Bowchicawowow · 27/11/2018 16:19

I don’t see what the point is of asking questions in advance of the webchat.

Tiscold · 27/11/2018 16:41

Well they answer them surely? Not everyone is available for the webchat so should we all not be allowed to find out information?

Talkinpeece · 27/11/2018 16:50

Bowchica
I don’t see what the point is of asking questions in advance of the webchat.
So that the experts could get the feel of the tone of the questions beforehand,
get their links and facts ready
and have something to do during the first minutes
rather than waiting for us to type.

It also allowed those who could not get online during that time to have some input.

Seems an eminently sensible way to run such a thing IMHO

Bowchicawowow · 27/11/2018 17:11

Talkinpeace They don’t tend to answer the questions asked in advance, especially when a poster takes over the live webchat.

Talkinpeece · 27/11/2018 17:13

Bowchica
But in this instance they did.
They answered pretty much all of the ones we raised in advance.
And I do not think any of us "took over" the chat.
The three experts did a good job of not reassuring me at all Grin

lonelyplanetmum · 27/11/2018 17:33

Many thanks to the three. It was interesting that all the matters people have analysed on the many Westminsterenders threads for the past two years were shown to be 100% accurate.

Depressing nevertheless.

HelenaDove · 27/11/2018 18:21

ive just read through this thread. Very depressing and very very worrying. My DH is on multiple medications.

And possible water shortages....................hospitals , care homes , day centres hairdressers, coffee shops ,even supermarkets will all be affected. economic suicide.

mum1980k · 28/11/2018 09:49

I really enjoyed taking part in this web chat. If, like me, you are keen to keep our position within the EU as open as possible so your sons and daughters (and perhaps you!) will be fully able to study or work in Europe, let alone enjoy the economic advantages of remaining within the EU (even more evident now following reports published today) and feel we should have a second referendum, please sign the Final Say petition that you can easily find online. There are more than a million signatures already. Watch it grow!!!

mum1980k · 28/11/2018 09:51

Agreed! For this reason and so many others, for example losing the EHIC (the European free health provision if we travel in Europe) I strongly believe we should stay in the EU. See my post below yours.
