Hello

We’re pleased to announce a webchat on Brexit, the ‘divorce’ agreement, and possible outcomes, with three guests from The UK in a Changing Europe on Tuesday 27 November at 1.30pm.

Professor Jonathan Portes is senior fellow at The UK in a Changing Europe and Professor of Economics and Public Policy in the Department of Political Economy at King's College London. Previously, he was principal research fellow of the National Institute of Economic & Social Research. Before that he was chief economist at the Cabinet Office, and previous to that chief economist at the Department of Work and Pensions.

Professor Catherine Barnard is senior fellow at The UK in a Changing Europe; Professor in European Union Law and Employment Law at the University of Cambridge; and senior tutor and fellow of Trinity College. Catherine specialises in EU law and employment law.

Professor Anand Menon is Director of The UK in a Changing Europe and Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs at Kings College London. He has held positions at Sciences Po, Columbia University and NYU. He has written on many aspects of contemporary Europe and is a frequent commentator on national and international media.

Professors Menon and Barnard joined us before the Brexit referendum in June 2016 - you can check out that webchat here if you fancy refreshing your memory/reliving the heady atmosphere.

Please do join the chat on Tuesday. If you can’t make it, please leave a question here in advance. Do bear in mind the webchat guidelines - one question each (follow-ups allowed if there’s time), and please be polite. Also following recent chats/guest posts we’ve updated our guidelines to let people know that, if one topic is overwhelmingly dominating a discussion with a guest, mods might request that people don't continue to post what's effectively the same question or point. Rest assured we will ALWAYS let guests know that it's an area of concern to multiple users and will encourage them to engage with those questions.

Thanks
MNHQ

If you feel you CAN support a second referendum as a possible outcome of the division we are all experiencing in Westminster, please sign the Independent''s FINAL SAY petition. More than a million of us already have and share its link on Facebook. It's a small action but could have a potentially big impact I think.

mum1980k · 28/11/2018 10:08

I guess they just couldn't answer that as the situation is still so unclear. But if, like me, you see TM's deal and no deal both disadvantageous re the economy, our health provision and future career opportunities for our children (let alone the rest!), then a clear option is a second referendum. Please sign the FINAL SAY petition and facebook the link. More than a million of us already have!!!

Talkinpeece · 28/11/2018 11:59

mum
Who are you talking to? The last 4 posts have all been yours?

mum1980k · 28/11/2018 13:01

Sorry.! I thought my responses would appear immediately AFTER the individual responses I was referring to. This doesn't seem to have happened. I just wanted to alert mums, if they were considering a second referendum rather than supporting the PM's white paper, that there is a dynamic and important petition that they could sign online. And also... to take the step to write to their own MP. So sorry for confusion.

Tiscold · 28/11/2018 14:48

Why just alert mums?

Another bot targetting us 'mums' with their cries of save your children! I supporrted remain but even im sick of the constant posts of vote for a final say or your a terrible person posts

mum1980k · 28/11/2018 15:37

I'm sorry if you think I'm a terrible person. Firstly, my intention was not only to 'aler mums' but as a mum myself and on a site called Mumsnet, I perhaps wrongly assumed that most participants on this feed were parents. Our children are generally our first focus but I also mentioned EHIC issues, health issues eg. a friend of mine who probably won't be able to travel to Continental Europe because she wouldn't get treatment for her renal illness there. Also, I mentioned the economic disadvantage which is even more evident today and free movement.. in that it might be very much harder to study and work in the EU post Brexit. We won't even have total control over our laws. If you read TM's deal, you'll see that the ECJ can be brought in for final judgements in some cases. It goes on and on. But sorry again that you felt angered by my suggestion which was clearly expressed as only an option.

Talkstotrees · 28/11/2018 15:55

Because she’s on “Mumsnet” 🤷‍♀️

Tiscold · 28/11/2018 17:05

I jist hate the ooh mums you must listen posts, she spams 4 posts right after each other.

And doesn't mean to only go for mums then includes 'I just wanted to alert mums' in her post.

Potential Crash Out Brexit hunger and death due to medicine shortages exacerbating continuing acute poverty and homelessness seems a reasonable issue to draw mothers attention to?
