Hello,

We’re pleased to announce a webchat with the leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday 30 May at midday.

Jeremy has been MP for Islington North since 1983, and has been Labour leader since 2015, having been re-elected when Owen Smith stood against him in 2016. Labour’s manifesto for the election on June 8 proposes ‘a Brexit deal that puts our economy and living standards first’, tax rises for the top 5% of earners, the renationalisation of the railways, free school meals for all primary pupils, the abolition of university tuition fees, and a £250 billion investment fund for infrastructure and the economy.

Please do join the chat on Tuesday at midday, or if you can’t make it, leave a question here in advance. Please do share the webchat on social - the more, the merrier!

As always, please remember our webchat guidelines - one question each, follow-ups if there’s time and please keep it civil .

(As we approach the General Election we will endeavour to offer you a balanced diet of webchats with politicians from different parties. More announcements coming soon.)

Thanks
MNHQ

The Labour manifesto is costed

I can fix that for you JimmyGrimble!

The Labour manifesto is not costed accurately.

So apparently MN is only interested in jam, biscuits and childcare. Is that what men think of us? Is that acceptable?

TheHoneyBadger · 30/05/2017 21:00

oh and then whichever party was elected in after them had to stick to that ten year plan that had been voted on.

i hate our political system. sick and tired of this boys club tribal nonsense. wasting billions on ideological projects that continue even when clearly burning through money with no social gain.

wish we could actually have some adults and adult approaches managing things.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 30/05/2017 21:00

haidik

Rufus you know what is stupid that you all want free schools free healthcare free benefits free kids care free school meals???first of all start paying bloody taxes!!!!

You have only mentioned your husbands taxes...

Charmageddon · 30/05/2017 21:02

I noticed that too Rufus!

But... but... but... he pays FOR ALL YOU LOT!!!!!

NettleTea · 30/05/2017 21:03

Im looking forward to seeing which questions Teresa May is going to answer when she comes in

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 30/05/2017 21:04

And as others have said not everyone on this thread is voting labour

For goodness sake...

And your question is still stupid...you dont get benefits because your husband earns a lot of money

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 30/05/2017 21:05

He is obviously a busy man charm if he is paying for all of us

I will sit here and wait patiently for my cheque

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 30/05/2017 21:05

I lied

I'm not going to be patient at all

Charmageddon · 30/05/2017 21:06

FOR ALL OF US I TELL YOU!!!!!!!!

JimmyGrimble · 30/05/2017 21:06

*i'd have been happier to see him say, for example, if elected we will enlist top economists etc to investigate the viability and costs of repurchasing the railways etc and to help us draw up a plan to do this. that would have been viable, given hope and promise but would mean taking the time and investigation required to check it out and develop plans that people could be voting on next election when we'd seen them manage other promises and the economy etc.

this, 'we'll do it' smacks of more ideological blind we'll do it my way even if it costs billions and isn't going to work - much like the bloody tories and their welfare reform.

no one appears responsible, balanced, committed to best practice and ensuring things can work and then presenting the facts as to how and letting people vote on it.*
It's a manifesto. People vote on it. The party with the most popular ideas forms a government. After 5 years (or 7 if TM gets her way) they are held accountable for how they have fulfilled their manifesto. Then we have another vote. You see how this thing works? I remember being promised £350, 000, 000 a week to go to the health service. Still waiting for that one. Austerity is not working for the vast majority of people in this country. Labour is offering a different approach. Some people voted for BREXIT preferring a leap into the unknown. . . that wasn't fully costed either was it?

Charmageddon · 30/05/2017 21:06

For Jeremy...

charm

I think it might just be for moo

I think moo has all our money

And i could have had a takeout for tea...i had to make do with fishcakes with rocket and a balsamic vinegar glaze, from Marks and Spencer's natch

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 30/05/2017 21:09

Wait...

Was that a stealth boast Blush

TheHoneyBadger · 30/05/2017 21:14

iknow what it is - i don't think it works on matters as important as this. a manifesto is worth nothing as we see time and time again. for something as huge as welfare reform (of the kind IDS has wasted billions on) or renationalising things like the railways i want to see non-partisan factual reports, costings, projections and ten year plans and then vote on those and to know that as they've been voted on they'll be stuck to regardless of which bloody tribe of eton boys comes in in 4 years time. rather than millions sunk in to the start and then it's abandoned as the next ideology based nonsense comes in to be half done in the next term.

it's fine to disagree with me but not to imply i'm stupid and a manifesto is somehow equivalent to what i am suggesting.

myrtleWilson · 30/05/2017 21:23

Jimmy - how patronising did you intend to be? I think all of us grasp the concept of manifestos and elections but there are inherent and obvious issues on timelines within them. honeybadgers point about welfare reform is well made - many people agreed with the principle behind making work pay and with simplifying the benefit system. However the mechanics of implementing it have been so ill thought through that the delays and costs are increasing and therefore any saving or indeed benefit are lost.

That said, we are starting to see some politicians recognising that they and the wider electorate need to deal with longer timelines than the next election - the work on devolution for example in Greater Manchester has looked at the earn back principle on investment through uplift in GVA over a reasonable period of time - not (unsurprisingly) a five year election cycle...

HoneyDragon · 30/05/2017 21:24

Was my question he answered really that bad?

I'm still keen to know if we got jam though or if he only bribes the BBC.

gluteustothemaximus · 30/05/2017 21:28

Don't understand the floating voters putting all their eggs into this web chat.

Jeremy has been involved in many TV interviews, and has been answering many questions, so it's probably best to catch up with those, to see the real Jeremy.

He covered in 25 minutes:

Sugar
Reducing voting age to 16
Childcare
Taxes over £80,000
Trump and USA
Advice to younger self
EU
Corporation Tax
Brexit

But all we hear is jam and biscuits??!! And aren't we silly women??!!

May is the one that believes in girl jobs and boy jobs.

This feels like a thread in AIBU Grin

HoneyDragon · 30/05/2017 21:30

TBH I wasn't hearing jam and biscuits until after the one show. Now I'm sorry but it's either jam for everyone or no jam at all 😡

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 30/05/2017 21:32

charm and jelly

Its no laughing matter

I know stealth boasting is frowned on when on mumsnet

Still it could have been worse, i could have popped to waitrose

When i get my money i will go there first...

Charmageddon · 30/05/2017 21:35

When my brew comes I'll probs pop into Waitrose too - it's only coz of thon benefits that I can afford to go there....

...Thanks Haidik's hubby!!

HoneyDragon · 30/05/2017 21:40

No one ever goes to Waitrose do they? You pop there or you don't go at all.
