UPDATE: Watch Hillary's answers to your questions - scroll down to the bottom of the OP!

Yes, really. No, we're not kidding. Hillary Clinton - the former US Secretary of State, former First Lady and rumoured likely Democratic presidential candidate for 2016 - is visiting the UK this week to talk about her new book, Hard Choices: her memoir of her time in office as President Obama's agent overseas, after running against him for the Democratic nomination in the 2008 election. As Secretary of State, she was arguably the most powerful woman in the world for four years; if she were to revive her bid for the presidency and succeed Obama to the White House in two years' time, there'd be no contest. And this Friday, she'll be answering your questions.

Unsurprisingly, her time is strictly limited to 20 mins per session with the world's media, so rather than the usual webchat format, we figured we'd cover more ground by putting your questions to her on camera. We reckon we'll have time for about eight questions, depending on length, so in order to make sure that we ask the ones you'd most like to have answered, Tech have created a tool whereby you can nominate your favourite. Please do read through the thread and cast your vote - you can see the top 10 questions, ranked by number of votes, in the box to the right. We'll take the top eight along with us on Friday morning, and get the video up on site as quickly as possible.

So: what is it you've always wanted to ask Hillary Clinton? Now's your chance! And remember just one question each, please, or we'll be confused about what we're voting for.

minipie Hilliary Clinton has been VERY vocal about believing women are intelligent enough to know their own bodies and that a woman's right to choose is sacrosanct.

I was given the new HC book yesterday so haven't had time to form a very intelligent, original & pertinent question.
Am hoping the question on sensible discussion on gun control makes the top 10.

Happy July 4th Hillary.

What, of all the things you have achieved, are you most proud of?

Dear Ms Rodham,

Recently you spoke about how your family was dead broke after your husband's presidency, which was followed by reports how much you and your husband earn giving speeches. To people who earn average wages or less this may sound like you have no real understanding of what it means to be poor, and they may draw the conclusion that you therefore cannot represent them. Is this true and how do you address these concerns?

Disappointed at how many people are asking her about her personal relationship and her decision to stay with her husband as though she was "letting the side down". It's no one's business and no one asks men about their marriages!

Wait for the Bill Clinton webchat and ask him why he cheated. Seriously, she is a Yale Lawyer with 40 years of political and legal experience. And you are asking why she "stood by her man"? That's the most interesting thing you can aske her? The most appropriate?

Who'd be a woman in politics?

What are you views regarding the balance between personal privacy, free speech, free media and national security?

@mnhq have you shut down random sign ups like you did when you had amnesty international on so that only MNrs get to ask questions. Hope so!

An issue that has been in the UK media a fair bit in recent years is the effect that the increasing availability of pornography is having on the development of children. It is apparently now common for children to see extreme, often violent pornography on a regular basis even if they are not actively looking for it. There have been suggestions that this is having an impact the expectations young people have of themselves and their partners as they mature leading to an increase in sexual coercion, assault and violence.

What are your views on the matter?

I'm a stay at home parent, but I recognise the massive value to the economy (and to society) that mothers who work out of the home provide. I assumed in 2014 that most people did, but I have seen that people have genuinely been concerned about your ability to be a grandmother and president.

I'm not sure if the assumption was that you and Bill would be packing it all in to provide free child care for Chelsea or what but do you have anything to say to the people who think a woman can't be an employee and a mother (or grandmother!)

Also congrats on your soon to be first grandchild!

Amazing scoop Mumsnet! My question is - Hillary you famously voted in favour of intervention in Iraq in 2002. Do you, as an American, feel responsible for the current crisis in the country?

Second question: who do you consider a greater threat on global security: Al Qaeda or Isis?

last question:

what areas of British government (in comparison to the US system) do you most admire?

Do you watch 'Veep' or is it too excrutiating, like watching 'The Office' is if you work in an office?

All the best.

Hi Hilary, thanks so much for coming on.

My question. You're a feminist icon - one of the most important women in the world. Can I ask how you square that position with your decision to stay with your husband, after his very public affair? This is, I realise, a personal question, and I apologise for that, but given the fact that you're someone women and girls around the world look up to, do you worry about the example you've set?

Hillary if you had to be stuck in a lift for a very, very long time (let's say at least 24 hours) with only one other person, which of the following would you choose if you had to and why?

  • Gloria Steinem
  • Sarah Palin
  • Naomi Wolf

Hey everyone - thanks so much for all your questions. We're going to close the thread to new questions at 5pm, to give everyone a chance to vote, so if you're still drafting yours, be quick! You'll still be able to vote for your favourites after that, though.

Thanks

Good Afternoon Hilary, I was pleased to read earlier this year that SeaWorld's attempt to allow trainers back in the water with killer whales suffered a setback when the federal appeals court ruled against them.

I quote from Orlando Sentinel
"The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., upheld a citation against SeaWorld issued in mid-2010 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The agency accused SeaWorld of endangering trainers by allowing them to perform in unprotected contact with the world's largest marine predators.
The two judges who voted to uphold the citation, Rogers and Chief Justice Merrick Garland, were nominated to the court by former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat. The lone dissenting judge, Brett Kavanaugh, was appointed by former President George W. Bush, a Republican."

Will your party back the campaign to end the captive orca breeding programme, block any new construction of entertainment marine parks and issue a phase down programme to close the current parks in operation, that hold captive the largest marine predators in the equivalent of a goldfish bowl?

Our generation must become responsible to begin the end of these parks.
The cruelty imposed on these mammals is horrific, from being spilt from their families, mothers separated from calf's, inter-breeding programmes.

When Osama bin Laden was captured the photo showed you with your hand over your mouth and the others in the picture, all men, looking like they were watching a movie. Do you think the US needs a president who can take hard military decisions without emotion or is your empathy a strength given the regional unrest in a number of areas you'll face as president?
