What shall I do with DDs placenta?

It has been in the freezer for a year now and I am starting to feel too proud of it to plant it and allow it to rot.
I dont suppose I can make it into something? I guess a necklace/bracelet wouldnt work.
Or maybe she would like it when she is 18?
Will it be alright in the freezer next to food for the next 17y?
I am afraid I am being serious - its such a special thing!

Now that's going to be in my head for hours

Dollytwat · 16/06/2010 16:39

are you sure it's still there? You might have defrosted it thinking it was something else and have already eaten it!

Bacofoil · 16/06/2010 16:42

pooky

try woonet

Now if you'll excuse me, the baby has just turded, and I need to dry it out and make a hat. A crap hat.

pookamoo · 16/06/2010 16:44

You could make a print of it, and then dispose of it in some way. Google placenta art or prints, I'm sure there will be a "how to" online. I have heard of people doing this before.

(good MN name, by the way!)

rastababi · 16/06/2010 16:49

We planted both our DDs placenta's in the garden with a little tree on top of each one. DD1 was born in the sack, which I dried out and pressed.

As for giving it as an 18th birthday present, I'm afraid I'd draw the line at that idea!

wannaBe · 16/06/2010 16:56

I thought it was illegal to bury them.

Tbh op I wouldn't be telling any of your rl friends that it's in the freezer, they might not be so inclined to accept your dinner invitations in the future.

Poledra · 16/06/2010 16:58

LionsAreScary, the only useful thing I found to do with my placenta was to give it to the research project that was going on in the hospital. They were very welcome to it.

rastababi · 16/06/2010 17:01

It's illegal to bury them on public property wannaBe Private land is fine.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 16/06/2010 17:06

chuck it away! What's wrong with you, woman!!!

if you want to do something useful and end up having another child, then donate your placenta to medical research

mountainmonkey · 16/06/2010 18:23

Can I just ask how one goes about turning a placenta into a necklace?

Not that I've got one stashed in the freezer as well-just curious.

LionsAreScary · 16/06/2010 18:48

eewww at placenta receipes. I was already feeling nausea & indigestion due to pregnancy!

like the idea of donating to medical research - will ask MW

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 16/06/2010 18:52

Have it with your lentil stew, not forgetting to dress in your best hessian frock and Jesus sandals.

SoupDragon · 16/06/2010 20:13

Hang on... Rastababi, you pressed the membranes from you DD??? what are you planning to do with them?

Blu · 16/06/2010 20:20

Look in your local Yellow Pages for a taxidemist?

Can I ask, quite seriously, why you feel proud of the placenta?

lal123 · 16/06/2010 20:23

Why is it illegal to bury a placenta???

Blu · 16/06/2010 20:24

Well, it could pose a health risk, significant quantities of human tissue, shallow buried in parks etc...

lucysmam · 16/06/2010 20:26

I'm a bit baffled that you'd keep it but am also curious as to why you would?

& why is it illegal to bury one?

x-post Blu, that makes sense

ShirleyKnot · 16/06/2010 20:27

The Placenta laws of 1956 gave full responsibility of the placenta to the local health authority.

To bury a placenta, in a park for example, can lead to serious penalties, including being poked at in the street until your upper arm is slightly bruised, and being physically taken to a shower to remove the stench of patchouli

Fruitysunshine · 16/06/2010 20:27

I cannot believe that somebody would keep a placenta, much less think up ways of how to preserve it!

Just clicked on that placenta recipe link and my stomach churned.

FGS.

  1. defrost it, wash it off and take some prints of it - really pretty, you ca use blood from a fresh one or oil based paints for nice colours.
  1. plant it in a big pot wth a nice tree on top, then even if you move you can take it wit you.
  1. dry it and frame it.
  1. make face cream

apart from the face cream i think it's a lovely idea to do something nice with it. Placentas are beautiful.
