To want to ban these phrases (not light-hearted - this would be my first act as dictator)

"I'm reaching out" - no, you are contacting me by email

"it broke me" - no, it made you a bit sad

"Picky bits tea" - just no

“To which” being crammed into sentences incorrectly. “We went for a curry to which I was pleased about.”

“l caught feelings.”

“I have trauma” being used for every negative experience under the sun, no matter how trivial.

“Problematic.”

“Girl boss.”

“Yass”, “queen”, “slay”, and any combination thereof.

Things being described as “iconic” when they fucking aren’t.

C'mon now, they are stunning and brave, living their authentic self

😂yes.

I'm also brave everytime I pop on a skirt and wear lippy and swish my hair around. The simpering that some women do over men who identify as women is ridiculous.

GetThatBloodyFaceOff · 02/07/2024 09:02

All of those things annoy me.

Also -
living his/my/her best life
need gone
giving me the ick

Do these people know how stupid they sound? (obviously not). Can't they extend their vocabulary at all?

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 02/07/2024 06:59

It happened on accident.

No it did not.

I forgot about this one. If I could only ban one it would be this. I'd have to fight so hard not to correct someone if they uttered this in front of me.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 02/07/2024 09:04

If you make me your Minister for Language, I promise to bring back the stocks for anyone who uses text speak anywhere but in a text.

Busybeemumm · 02/07/2024 09:05

Thanks OP for a great thread. Most of these have been grinding my gears so good to know I'm not the only one! Actually put in 'grinding my gears' on the list😆

GHSP · 02/07/2024 09:05

Rellies instead of relatives <shudders>

Tell me about it! I lost a lot of friends years ago because I wouldn't tow the twaw line and was genuinely shocked at the people who did. I never expected it from them, especially the parents of teen girls!

A buffet

You don’t seriously say to your kids ‘buffet for tea tonight my darlings!!’ ??? Buffet is for lots of people, not just a load of bits n bobs out of your fridge.

newtb · 02/07/2024 09:09

Train station. No! It's a railway station with trains that run on railway lines. I blame Kirstie Alsopp. You never used to hear it.

Justleaveitblankthen · 02/07/2024 06:52

Speaking on the phone to anyone under the age of 40, I seem to be "Amazing!" because I can attend an appointment they are offering.

Infact, if they say it once, you know they will say it another 5 times before the call ends😶

This is so true, glad it’s not just me! We’ve been in the process of selling our house & both the estate agent & solicitor I’ve spoken to seem to respond to practically ever answer I give with ‘amazing!’ or ‘perfect.’

Funnywonder · 02/07/2024 09:16

Obligated. There is no such word.

Of course there is! I would say 'educate yourself' but I HATE that expression🤣🤣

That one gets my husband shouting at the TV or radio, along with lieutenant pronounced as loo-tenant.

SwordToFlamethrower · 02/07/2024 09:25

Adverts that say "say hello to" and it's an inanimate object or place. "Say hello to a good time, here at blah blah!"

NO I SHAN'T

Toooldforlonghair · 02/07/2024 09:26

I have recently heard Unalive or someone has been unalived. They are dead or have died. Use passed away if have to use a euphamism.

Callipygion · 02/07/2024 09:26

NRTFT as a lot of these are making my blood pressure rocket, but may I just add “from the get go” I absolutely despise that with a passion. Fuck off with that please.

SwordToFlamethrower · 02/07/2024 09:27

RedOrBlueOrYellow · 02/07/2024 07:42

Another one is 'lose my shit' - you have diarrhea and are about to poop your pants. Or you are annoyed about something or someone. 🙄

The word "poop" narks me no end. It's poo!

You are quite correct @OptimismvsRealism picky bits tea is a nonsense.

It should of course be referred to by its correct name, a "cold collation".

It is snacky tea in my house. I stand by my choices.

CoffeeLover90 · 02/07/2024 09:36

Ponoka7 · 02/07/2024 07:48

That's because it's an old saying, especially in some parts of the UK. It's a direct translation of mea culpa and is an admittance of guilt and apology rolled into one.
@CoffeeLover90 I like himself, yourself etc when said in an Irish accent.

I love the Irish accents and the sayings such as 'your man there' and 'he's after going to the match' but this man is not Irish. He only speaks like that to the customers, not anyone else. I'm about to beg him to just say you

Toooldforlonghair · 02/07/2024 09:26

I have recently heard Unalive or someone has been unalived. They are dead or have died. Use passed away if have to use a euphamism.

This is used because TikTok and other SM platforms don't allow words like murder or suicide.

Rightsraptor · 02/07/2024 09:43

Being told 'no problem' in a cafe when placing my order.

I'm in a cafe: why would my ordering food and drink ever be a 'problem'?

Also people using 'decimate' incorrectly as they think it means to (almost) wipe out. It doesn't. It means to reduce by one tenth, hence the 'dec'.

Midge75 · 02/07/2024 09:44

"I'll wait", following a challenge to name something or prove something or admit to caring about something - I don't know, but it's always said witha kind of arrogance and assumption that nobody will be able to reply, but usually by someone who has absolultely no grounds for that arrogance.

e.g. "show me a woman who doesn't want a man to protect her. I'll wait"
