"I'm reaching out" - no, you are contacting me by email

"it broke me" - no, it made you a bit sad

"Picky bits tea" - just no

I think 'picky bits tea' tops the list here. I wish the top 10 suggestions could be ranked in order of popularity! I think holibobs might be number 2.

Educate yourself & privileged

Oh yes, and though I can see it is useful shorthand, “Check your privilege.”

Busybeemumm · 02/07/2024 08:00

I cant stand "my lived experience". What does that even mean!

ChristmasFluff · 02/07/2024 08:03

So glad to see someone finally hating on people being 'broken'!

'Methinks' really gets my goat. Just say 'I think' and stop trying to be entertaining, funny, arch, or whatever the hell you are trying to achieve by saying it.

And almost worst of all is people talking to countries, cities etc as though they were people. "Goodby Barcelona, you were amazing". vomit.

Ditto talking to things as though they are people - 'this hairdryer, well, she's seen better days.' It was interesting the first time somoene did it, it's just mega-dull now.

‘Need gone’

it makes me so unreasonably angry

Totally agree.
Also 'needs fed'.

What are picky bits? Are they left overs/bits and bobs of random foods, biscuit crumbs/things a 5 year old might eat?

Agree with this "picky bits tea" is right up there for me from this list but I've never heard it IRL just on MN!

''Making memories''

As kids we remember the most random things - no need for a carefully curated memory maker.

Yes yes yes! This! It’s just living and doing things!!!

AngelinaFibres · 02/07/2024 08:14

Fur baby. Its not a baby. You bought it. You paid money for it. Its not a baby. Its a purchase. You love it. That's fabulous. It's not your baby.

chillycat · 02/07/2024 08:16

Eatery
😂If that's on the sign, I ain't going in

OnlyFannys · 02/07/2024 08:19

Picky bits is the all time worst. Since being on MN I have also started to hate the word droves, always talking of the bloody droves. Apparently the collective name for a group of teacher is droves. So much drama BECAUSE THEY ARE LEAVING IN DROVES!!!!

I feel better now.

chillycat · 02/07/2024 08:19

And the obvious ones:
This one
I'll hand that to yourself. give it to myself etc
Reach out
Touch base

I'm howling - sorry do you mean you found it mild amusing? Are you a wolf?

Calling friends/family humans

'Happy birthday to this gorgeous human...

'I'm so lucky to have this human in life'

Wait for the Olympics, when the pundits start using medal as a verb. I noticed it during the Tokyo 2020
games and it made me want to pull my ears off.

This has been happening for a while. At one Olympics the UK had a very good gymnast called Beth Tweddle and the commentator actually said 'And Tweddle medals!' It was glorious.

'Gentle reminder', 'have a gentle word', 'Gently, have you considered ...' etc all make me homicidal.

I am not fond of people saying, “Parenting.”

Ugh.

Birthing seems to have replaced giving birth. I wish it hadn't.

Can I get - if you ever come out with this and see a manic-looking older woman behind you mouthing 'PLEASE MAY I HAVE' that will be me.

CriticalCondition · 02/07/2024 08:39

'Reach out'.
The following question runs through my head every time I hear the phrase. It will come as no surprise that there has never been an occasion on which it has turned out to be acceptable.

To want to ban these phrases (not light-hearted - this would be my first act as dictator)

"Trans women are women". NO. THEY. ARE. NOT.

This.
I'll add when people say "This"

Yougotwhatstuckwhere · 02/07/2024 08:49

@ClaudiaWinklepanda is a red lip like a cold sore? Or related to a black eye?

Demonhunter · 02/07/2024 08:51

Agree with so many, although there a few mentioned that make me feel "personally victimised" (that one, is one of my pet hates 😖)

I'm off shopping soon to get picky bits in for tea 😛

@mummybear2104 I also admit to using the word human, but in my defence it's only when I take in a new rescue animal and they have the same name as a human, so for example, they will be referred to as Dave cat 😺and Dave human 🙋

RedOrBlueOrYellow · 02/07/2024 08:53

Trans women are women. Incorrect.

They are actually biological men who use stereotypes of women and they identify with those stereotypes and feel that makes them a woman. They may or may not have had surgery for various modifications. However, factually their DNA is XY so male.

NewGirlinClass · 02/07/2024 08:57

Radio silence. All they mean is there was no comment.

Gifting. I was gifted this. I gifted her that. And gifts in general

Just say given and presents

I thought birthing was parking a ship. Maybe that’s berthing.

BoomBoom70 · 02/07/2024 09:00

It’s Marks and Spencer, not Marks and Spencer’s. Annoys me every time I hear someone say it.

Also, why when someone gets to a certain age they go from ‘I fell over” to ‘I had a fall’. I even heard someone yesterday talking about ‘when was it I had my fall?’

Plus most of the others already mentioned but if I had to choose to mention again
-we’re pregnant - 🤬🤬🤬
-gentle or polite reminder

I feel better now. Great thread OP 😊
