To want to ban these phrases (not light-hearted - this would be my first act as dictator)

"I'm reaching out" - no, you are contacting me by email

"it broke me" - no, it made you a bit sad

"Picky bits tea" - just no

‘’Gentle Hugs” as a response on Facebook to someone posting bad news like illness or the death of a relative.

Unique.

That’s it. Something is either unique, or it’s not.

So it can’t be really, very, quite, almost or whatever other word anyone wants to put with it.

Oh God yes! that one fills me with rage

@Lifeomars

I have a relative who calls snacks “diddles.” That might be even worse than “picky bits.”

Diddle? That’s mastrubation

fleabites · 01/07/2024 22:21

"next steps"
"going forwards"
and as mentioned in the OP "reaching out".

I'm in a couple of local facebook groups and what really pisses me off is people starting posts with "Hello beautiful people". What the fuck is that all about?

Thedayb4youcame · 01/07/2024 22:21

"Cringe".

"Chill"

As in "it was so cringe". "He was so chill".

No one (I hope to God no one) would ever say "it was so taste" or "He was so bore".

It is cringeworthy, and chilled, tasty, and boring. Etc. Something or someone cannot and never will be cringe or chill, in the same they could never be car or sneeze.

Gifted.

And phrases like "it needs done" instead of "it needs doing " or "it needs gone" instead of "it needs to go".

Do you mean, “it needs to be done”?!

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/07/2024 22:22

Ah yes, I don't even flop onto a zoom/teams call.

I might huff, grump or slither, depending on mood and subject matter. I will also grumble off as soon as possible.

As for the 'moving forward' people, I always want to say 'oh good I am so glad you clarified that Jurgen, because I had thought we might lurch backwards, grind to a halt or dive off sideways...'

It brings out the sarcastic twat in me.

god yes. when did 'gifted' start? whatever happened to giving someone something?

'needs gone' makes me feel murderous.

People in my old office used to "lean into" a problem or situation. And once they had they'd see if they'd 'moved the dial' on whatever wankerage was that they'd been blathering on about.

One of the reasons I don't work there any more. 😬

This is absolutely hilarious!!!!’nnnn

Is it? 😦 Maybe it meant something different back in her day? She’s almost 90. Or maybe she’s starting to get confused 😐

BriansGotHisWinkyOutAgain · 01/07/2024 21:52

HAUL 🤢

Also, I feel like you will all understand my internal anger about this one... a colleague uses 'myself' (incorrectly) in every telephone conversation she has. Last week, she said 'I'm taking annual leave next week, so myself won't be available'

Is your colleague Irish? We tend to say himself or herself: is herself around? Again it's a direct translation from Irish to English.

youwouldthink · 01/07/2024 22:24

The current trend of the headline 'xxxx has broken their silence' Probably seen in public a whole 3 minutes past whatever news has broken.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/07/2024 22:24

Anyone who uses the phrase "kicking the can down the road" especially when describing someone in government or a politician and thinking they are so fucking original

Zone2NorthLondon · 01/07/2024 22:24

This too will pass. An inane platitude. What if it doesn’t pass? What if this is the start of the decline

Lifeomars · 01/07/2024 22:24

"literally" and "like" used as some kind of verbal tic. I once overheard the following from a young woman talking on her phone:

"I am telling you like I am like getting no sleep like I am literally an owl"

Wigtopia · 01/07/2024 22:25

Cat/dog parent

Eugh yes! I get all twitchy when someone speaks to my dog and adds “your mummy” when they mean me. Makes me want to twat them! 😄
She isn’t my daughter, she is worst lodger ever (doesn’t pay rent and expects me to pick up her actual crap). She does however have excellent comedic timing which counts for tons! 🤩

Wintersgirl · 01/07/2024 22:25

"Gawjus"....learn to spell for god's sake.

Onemanwenttomowameado · 01/07/2024 22:25

wait list.

I received an email today letting me know I am on a wait list.

A what? I was so annoyed I reported it as junk.

Why are the hugs gentle anyway?
