Look After Your Legs

I was in a cafe today and over heard an elderly woman talking to younger friends about getting older. She said the best advice she could give is to look after your legs as they are so important for mobility. But annoyingly she did not explain what she meant by this, and I could hardly ask!

So does anyone know how we can look after our legs?

Look on YouTube for videos by Will Harlow - HT Physio over 50s Specialist. I use his exercises every day and they have made such a difference. His explanations are clear and he has a realistic appreciation of what people are capable of. He has also written a book. I think it's called "Thriving beyond Fifty".

Thanks for this recommendation

I felt out of place when I went to a gym 15 years ago, and even then had to lie on the form about not having any health issues. The instructor knew nothing about dealing with any limitations. Now with my sciatica I think it could cause me more harm. Oh and I hated the gym. Feeling out of place did not help.

Why did you lie? A decent instructor should help you.

NoisySnail · 06/04/2024 22:21

Thanks I will look at those videos.
I sued to attend an exercise class for people with my health condition run by a physio, but my condition improved and I became too able for the class.

@Newsenmum That is a really bizarre claim. Why do you think I am lying? It was Roko chain and the instructor seemed to know nothing about any potential limitations, not even age related ones.

we know our bodies best

And yet MN is full of women who have close to zero knowledge of what perimenopause and menopause might mean for their bodies, or how the loss of estrogen might affect the flexibility of various tendons. And the young men and women who attempt to teach exercise classes or train us usually know even less.

I’ve learned so much from this thread and had already started to build my strength, albeit slowly and later than is ideal.

My question to those in the know is how do I stop my knees from hurting so much?

ILoveMyCat23 · 10/04/2024 06:33

I've always been fairly fit - I walk most days and go on my elliptical for 20 minutes each day for more intense cardio. The elliptical is great as it doesn't put any pressure on your joints.

I started doing reformer pilates at the begining of this year and omg it's showed how weak my muscles are (especially my legs). My core I have managed to build up quite well in just a few months but my legs still need a lot of work. I'd like to go twice a week ideally but it's quite expensive.

I find the pilates does sometimes set my SPD off but if that happens then I book a massage or physio appointment to sort it out so I can continue.

Oh and I've been doing leg raises ever since I was diagnosed with patella instability (can't remember exactly what she said but it makes me prone to partially dislocating my knees). I try and do it while I'm sat watching TV or reading. I do ten raises and then ten pulses on each side and repeat that a couple of times.

PaminaMozart · 10/04/2024 07:02

Try this leg workout by Lucy Wyndham Read @ILoveMyCat23 . I've posted it a couple of already, but it really is super effective!

Beautiful3 · 11/04/2024 19:31

Barbara Curry Yoga dvd is amazing. I had back pain, it's really helped it. My core muscles feel great. It's fantastic for your whole body.

Might it be patella alta? (That's what I have.)

I use this, Revitive Medic Circulation Booster it has completely stopped my night cramps (for which I used to take prescription meds)and restless leg and I take quite a bit of turmeric for the joints. Best thing for me would be to loose two stone which I am working on.

Evening all, you leggy lot. We've had some nominations for this thread to go into Classics. Flowers

We think this is a v good idea, seeing as there are so many interesting and useful tips within the discussion.

So let's all hot foot it over to Classics now, shall we? <presses the big Red classics button with a dainty toe>

I didn't know there's a Classics section! But yes, well deserved.

Ah sorry @NoisySnail, I don’t think you said your age so I was basing my advice on someone who is not already ‘older’.

Edited

Thing is though I saw Joanna Lumley do this (on TV) a few years ago and she was ancient even then. I remember being amazed as I can't do it.

saveforthat · 04/05/2024 12:46

I do ballet (on line). My legs are pretty strong now.

I guess because you said you lied on the form? I think this is what is being referred to!

@saveforthat Do you pay for classes or are there any good youtube classes you could recommend? I really want to strengthen my leg muscles but squats get boring!
