I have a question about centaur babies.

Would the human section be all floppy and helpless like a whole human baby, while the horsey but be able to walk around like a horse baby? Or would both half’s be either humanly floppy and under developed or Horsily matured?

and how would mama centaur birth something that shape?

@StBrides thanks for clarifying. 🐘 🐘 are a good reference point...

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 04/08/2023 16:07

@StBrides

I had always presumed that Zeus switched back to humanoid form after the actual abduction. So Europa climbed on the bulls back and he runs off ( but transformation behind the tree and out comes the King of the Gods); same with Ganymede and the Eagle.

You’ve upset me now!

although Michelangelo and Yeats would agree with you re Leda and the Swan so ……😲

Mermaid babies are like seahorse babies, tiny tiny fry. Also like seahorses, the mermen have a pouch in which the fry is kept safe, and he does most of the early parenting.

We must hope so. Those arms are pretty ridiculous, you wouldn’t like to think of Mr Enormous having a similarly disproportionate prick. ( though I suppose he would be pretty much immune from mockery).

I wonder if stegosaurus ( or at least the females ) moulted during the mating season? Stags’ antlers drop off once the fighting and fucking season is over, I often used to find them in the park as a child.

This is much more fun than shelling the peas for dinner.

I'd never thought of that. Or perhaps they could retract them or make them lie flat?

The thing with T Rex is that they needed the tail out to balance - and the genitals (presumably) were under the tail, making it a bit tricky for the male to reach, given the size of a T Rex.

It's just more questions, isn't it?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 04/08/2023 16:18

As for seeing a baby minotaur...no thanks. Minotaurs were vicious bastards - although understandably so, really.

WitcheryDivine · 04/08/2023 16:22

What about the little sphinxes though, do you feed them meat, bird seed or milk?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 04/08/2023 16:25

Good question. And with those hairstyles, what would you do about nits? I wonder what sphinx parents say when someone says aww, which one of you does s/he look like?

IsadoraQuagmire · 04/08/2023 16:27

I know ALL about centaur babies, because I've seen Xena deliver Ephiny's baby. Ephiny was an Amazon who fell in love with a centaur, so the baby (Xenon) was really half human, but LOOKED like a centaur. Anyway, he could stand minutes after birth. Xena delivered him by cesarean, she has MANY skills 😊

I heard something on radio 4 (go me) a few weeks ago where they were talking about children t-Rex being small and their arms being in proportion to their bodies. It’s just when they grow up that they get huge and their arms don’t grow.

turbonerd · 04/08/2023 16:33

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen

My apologies, I meant LIKE manatees.

And they can’t be scaly, I think that is just someone’s imagination going riot.

Mermaids will be smooth like - well, like manatees.

I love manatees.

I feel a lot of people on this thread would enjoy the Incryptid series (starts with Discount Armageddon) which features a family of cryptozoologists trying to study and protect weird creatures.

Steve Brusatte (palaeantologist currently teaching at Edinburgh) would agree. The arms weren't actually much use, he thinks that the TRex hunted in packs - the juveniles hunted down and held the prey because theire arms were stronger and the mature T Rex dispatched it.

TRex in packs - how much of a nightmare is that for a plant eating dino.

ReadtheReviews · 04/08/2023 16:44

I'm sure Xena had an episode where an Amazon woman was having a half centaur baby and it had to be cesarean... I've not thought about the helpless human baby top half aspect before..

Maybe that was who was being quoted. My brain soaks up tiny bits of information, rather than the useful whole. Poor vegan dinos.

Hang on hang on - are people implying that centaurs are born from a horse parent and a human parent? I had always thought their parents would be centaurs going back to time immemorial. Also very wise and clever so presumably quite modern medically and have this whole baby/foal birth thing DOWN.

Kpo58 · 04/08/2023 17:00

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/08/2023 13:35

Do mermaids have live births?

I would have thought that they lay eggs. Going from the very scientific model (my DS merman Ken doll) I have to hand, he doesn't have any have any nipples and so the female is unlikely to either. So when they hatch they can go straight onto solids.

How did centaurs come about in the first place, though? were they a really out there branch of hominids? homo half horse, as it were.

WitcheryDivine · 04/08/2023 17:08

Great question - Homo Hoofiens?

Re: mermaids, I think they're more like seals - seals give birth from the middle join of their tail, poor bastards.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 04/08/2023 17:17

So....when Zeus seduced Leda was he swan sized or man sized? he'd have to be man sized, wouldn't he? or at the least a bloody big swan.

FoxClocks · 04/08/2023 17:31

I've always assumed merpeople are mammals like dolphins so would give birth to a live baby.

FoxClocks · 04/08/2023 17:38

Coming back to centaurs it seems like they have 2 stomachs a human one, and a horse one - so what do they eat?

ImNotReallySpartacus · 04/08/2023 17:38

Does anyone know the life expectancy of a centaur? I'm assuming it is similar to either the human or equine life expectancy. I'd hate to think the human part would be stuck on top of a dead horse for years.

Good question! Probably between the two, about 50 years. And surely, like conjoined twins, when one dies, both die?

What a ghastly thought. Surely this is the key point at which being magic comes into play, I think they live for centuries.
