Help? I've acquired a very young kitten?

We've had a female cat visiting in the garden for about 7 months. We actually thought she belonged to someone but we discovered she had no home and was a stray. We were planning on catching her a couple of months ago but she disappeared. Anyway she reappeared and had a litter in my garden. Well I say litter. One kitten. Numerous attempts to catch her have all failed. She was happy to take food from anyone but would never let us touch her

Mum cat was found dead on the side of the road this morning. I feel so guilty as it is.

Anyway I've got the kitten inside. It's pissing it down. He's soaked. At a guess I'd say he's at most 6 weeks. He's been eating the food we've left for mum. He fits in the palm of my hand. I know nothing about cats really. Especially one this small

So I've booked him into the vets tomorrow. Earliest appointment

I have a 2 year old and a husband in bed from an appendicitis emergency.
So I'm on my own really

So questions
What do I do?
What do I feed him?
I've dried him with a towel and he's now all fuzzy but he's screaming murder

My 2 year old won't leave him alone but I can't split them cos she can't be left alone and he's like a tiny little thing. Any suggestions? Could I put him in a box for now? Just so he can sleep without being poked

Ok I don't know what to do.

You need to contact a rescue! ASAP

At work we contacted them, they gave us traps. They were caught but had to let them go again, as they couldn't take them in as they were full.

We really need to set off to the vets

Cuteness overload

Aww this is probably my favourite MN thread ever Smile thank you for helping this little kitten OP, I am so looking forward to seeing the updates on Peppa!

DeadButDelicious · 21/10/2022 11:08

Oh bless him he's gorgeous! Well done OP for taking him in! We had a similar situation a few years ago (I say 'few' it was 10 😶), some people moved away and just left their cats behind 😡. We rang all the local rescues but they were full and couldn't help so myself and a few other neighbours just started feeding them so they didn't starve. One of them, got clipped by a car and I ended up taking her to the vet to get checked over and the rest as they say, is history! She's been with us 10 years and is a bossy little madam but we love her very much. I don't think we'd have ever caught her if it hadn't been for that, she was very skittish. We did manage to get the other a place in rescue, it took months though. I often wonder about him/her. This is my little rescue.

If anyone wants kitteny goodness, I recommend fostering for a cat charity if possible. I'm currently fostering two boy kittens about 4 months old. When they came here they were frightened, hissy balls of fluff. Now they're rampaging around my kitchen and asking for belly rubs!

I would love another cat, but have 2 dogs that are not used to them.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 21/10/2022 11:15

He's absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for looking after him.

GettingItOutThere · 21/10/2022 11:40

how was the vets today OP?

cutest kitten ever!!

EmmaH2022 · 21/10/2022 11:49

You're going to make a fortune with those books OP.

you could livestream Peppa. Tell him you want 80% of the profit. "Peppa Makes a Profit" can be the book about the livestream.

I want more pics with the tail!

I had a colleague who did this, he loved it.

I can't have cats here because I live on a high floor, but maybe in future.

We are home from the vets. We have a little boy. Vet reckons he's about 6 weeks at most and like most have said he should be fine away from mum. Just needs cuddles and love.

He's been flead and wormed and generally poked and prodded. Bringing him back in 2 weeks for jabs. Thank you to the previous poster who recommended insurance. I've read some stories of massive vet bills so he's now insured. Not bad for a kitten I only got yesterday.
He's very playful now. Rolling over and showing his tummy.

He's a great age to be really socialised. A word of warning, cats pick their humans. Even though your DH may be the one who wants Peppa, Peppa may well decide that you are his human and he'll bond with you instead.

Cats tend to gravitate towards people who don't like cats and win them over.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/10/2022 12:18

Also you can get healthy pet club, you pay a certain amount each month You get flea, worm treatment and you also get 10% off vet bills.

softplayfail · 21/10/2022 12:18

@TheLongRider he's sat on my chest purring and occasionally he looks up at me and blinks. I suggested to the toddler we call him George instead and she looked offended and sighed like I'm a total moron and said peppa very slowly and then repeated it. Fine peppa it is.

Sounds like he has you wrapped round his tiny little paw.

Well, it has to be, now I've invented Peppa Makes a Profit. 😂

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/10/2022 12:21

Could spell it Pepper.

PuppyMonkey · 21/10/2022 12:29

I've had a really crappy month. With my husband getting appendicitis being the icing on the crap cake of my life. Apparently all I needed was a kitten because I don't think I've smiled so much today in a long while. Plus seeing my daughter be so gentle and caring is a great side of the usual whirlwind terrible 2s toddler who has me using every single skill I possess. So yeah I'm still not sure how this happened but maybe I am a cat person. Or maybe just a peppa person.

We will see how much he loves me in 4 months when he's getting his visit to be neutered.

Oh, he’ll HATE you, that’s why your husband needs to take him Grin my sister asked me to take her kitten for the snip so he wouldn’t hate her…. Now whenever I go round there the cat hisses at me. Trust me, he’ll remember.

Happy sigh 🥰
Such a lovely story!
(I’m amazed that he knows about slow blinks - I wonder if it’s instinctive or if his mum taught him.
Be sure to do it back to him!)
