Help? I've acquired a very young kitten?

We've had a female cat visiting in the garden for about 7 months. We actually thought she belonged to someone but we discovered she had no home and was a stray. We were planning on catching her a couple of months ago but she disappeared. Anyway she reappeared and had a litter in my garden. Well I say litter. One kitten. Numerous attempts to catch her have all failed. She was happy to take food from anyone but would never let us touch her

Mum cat was found dead on the side of the road this morning. I feel so guilty as it is.

Anyway I've got the kitten inside. It's pissing it down. He's soaked. At a guess I'd say he's at most 6 weeks. He's been eating the food we've left for mum. He fits in the palm of my hand. I know nothing about cats really. Especially one this small

So I've booked him into the vets tomorrow. Earliest appointment

I have a 2 year old and a husband in bed from an appendicitis emergency.
So I'm on my own really

So questions
What do I do?
What do I feed him?
I've dried him with a towel and he's now all fuzzy but he's screaming murder

My 2 year old won't leave him alone but I can't split them cos she can't be left alone and he's like a tiny little thing. Any suggestions? Could I put him in a box for now? Just so he can sleep without being poked

Ok I don't know what to do.

This has warmed my heart!!

This is him. Again I'm saying him. Could be a girl. My cat knowledge is non existent

What a sweet little kitten.
Is he or she fully weaned?
He or she will likely need routine worming and vaccinations when old enough {Just as any kitten and puppy will}, but what a little sweetheart!
Son's GF has a tiny ex stray born to a feral mother, but Mimou is lovely {Not 'wild' like her mother }
Kitten milk is a good idea.
Good luck!

OP "Husband said he's snuggled next to him and it's better than the codeine"

yep. I can imagine your DH will have a better recovery with this little one to help.

oakleaffy · 20/10/2022 18:54

Edit..Meant to say 'Mimou is lovely and friendly'..Her mum, being a feral, is obviously careful around humans...But mum is cared for now.

Have heard this from someone else this week...a Whippet curled up next to them with abdominal pain, and the Whippet's warmth took the pain away..
Animals are blessed things.

Yes, box with warm water bottle in it, wrapped in a soft scarf or jumper and something soft and cozy to lie on.
Allow a place for him/her to wee/poo, as well :) Newspapers shredded at a pinch if you haven't a litter box yet.

Poor mum cat but didn't she chose well in whose garden to stay in ❤️

oakleaffy · 20/10/2022 19:04

@softplayfail So glad you have all your Kitten stuff ready.
Peppa looks lovely.
What a sweetie.
Good luck at Vet's tomorrow.

Snozzlemaid · 20/10/2022 19:10

Aw this is so heartwarming.
What a lovely story.
Peppa's one lucky cat having found you.
You're wonderful for taking him in and looking after him.
Looking forward to updates and more photos of course.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/10/2022 19:13

Poor mum cat. Peppa will live the life though by the sounds of it.

Kittens need non-clumping litter, not clumping incase they eat it.

tentinginmarch · 20/10/2022 19:14

Omg @softplayfail do I remember correctly? Was it your post that made me laugh so much in sympathy (because of the way you wrote it) about the soft play getting stuck incident?
If so, this kitten is totally your karma. You had a horrid thing (and made lots of us chuckle with you) and now you have been gifted a beautiful kitty 🥰🥰🥰

softplayfail · 20/10/2022 19:15

He's found his meow. Asked toddler what Teddy is going to bed with you tonight? And she pointed at peppa. Nice try kid

@DWMoosmum what a very kind person you are - that's lovely.

softplayfail · 20/10/2022 19:17

@tentinginmarch yep that's me. Decided I couldn't be bothered creating a new profile cos I have no shame.
Now it's a part serious part joke profile. Karma has given me a husband with appendicitis which has taught me nursing is never in my future career path as I appear to have missed a sympathy gene somewhere. And now a kitten who's currently chasing his tail. A kitten up to 2 pm today I had no idea I'd be getting

Danikm151 · 20/10/2022 19:20

Cats choose their owners(human servants). You belong to him now

SpringCalling · 20/10/2022 19:21

Aw Peppa has struck it lucky!

Hm2020 · 20/10/2022 19:22

Ooh he’s lovely x

IceCreem · 20/10/2022 19:23

MidnightConstellation · 20/10/2022 18:00

What about cat rescues? None of them would take the kittens? That’s awful.

No and I called 16. Most said couldn’t help , rspca didn’t even return my calls !!!!!
one said fill in a form we might have space in a few weeks another said just keep feeding them

tentinginmarch · 20/10/2022 19:31

@softplayfail well as far as I'm concerned you're lovely and funny with it. We'd be friends for sure!
Hope your DH gets better soon. And never utters the words mine did "now I know how you felt after your c section".

Seriously had a sense of humour fail at that point. Nursing isn't for me. Kittens are though!

SpentDandelion · 20/10/2022 19:32

He is very lucky to have you take care of him, cats are a huge part of my life and always will be. We had a tom cat when l was growing up, he was the love of my life.

softplayfail · 20/10/2022 19:34

@tentinginmarch same scenario! He got home Tuesday and said 'you know when I suggested we go for a walk 2 days after you gave birth, I am so so sorry'.

I planned to spend this evening catching up on my er rematch. Instead I'm building a cat scratcher
