Help? I've acquired a very young kitten?

We've had a female cat visiting in the garden for about 7 months. We actually thought she belonged to someone but we discovered she had no home and was a stray. We were planning on catching her a couple of months ago but she disappeared. Anyway she reappeared and had a litter in my garden. Well I say litter. One kitten. Numerous attempts to catch her have all failed. She was happy to take food from anyone but would never let us touch her

Mum cat was found dead on the side of the road this morning. I feel so guilty as it is.

Anyway I've got the kitten inside. It's pissing it down. He's soaked. At a guess I'd say he's at most 6 weeks. He's been eating the food we've left for mum. He fits in the palm of my hand. I know nothing about cats really. Especially one this small

So I've booked him into the vets tomorrow. Earliest appointment

I have a 2 year old and a husband in bed from an appendicitis emergency.
So I'm on my own really

So questions
What do I do?
What do I feed him?
I've dried him with a towel and he's now all fuzzy but he's screaming murder

My 2 year old won't leave him alone but I can't split them cos she can't be left alone and he's like a tiny little thing. Any suggestions? Could I put him in a box for now? Just so he can sleep without being poked

Ok I don't know what to do.

Peppa LOVES chicken

😁

Our family cat ate through a plastic bag to get the coq-au-vin left overs. We didn’t realise until he staggered into the living room sideways.

Peppa LOVES chicken

Not a surprise. Cats tend to love fresh meat. Even cooked fresh meat.

Just be careful not to create a monster. Otherwise he will mug you every time you have some meat

Prepare yourself for some epic litter tray experiences !

We're vefetarian (except DS) so the cats aren't fussy about our food but like to share some of DS plain roasted chicken (with skin) at Christmas .

Tinned tuna gives FemaleCat a dodgy tum so we limit that to a small amount every so often. I used to crush the worming tablets in tuna but stopped because I think they went straight through her !

Snails (nice crunchy shell-on catchable snacks) have an adverse effect but i cannot control how many she has <sigh>

Toddlerteaplease · 30/10/2022 17:08

@Soubriquet I was about to say the same. OP if you ever want to eat a meal in peace , be very careful about giving titbits. I am unable to eat unmolested by two Greedy Persians.

LeMoo · 30/10/2022 17:38

@Toddlerteaplease it's all part of the fun and joy of living with cats

Yes but it’s also nice to eat in peace.

If I don’t chuck Toots chicken whilst I’m eating she will actually sit next to me and very carefully pull a piece off when she thinks I’m not looking.

So to keep my food safe, I have to have a tiny little meat pile just for her that I periodically throw and make her chase it to eat.

Keeps her entertained and me cat free.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/10/2022 17:52

Took me ages to realise that Cheddar would only eat chicken or steak, if I have feed it to her. Magic is less fussy!

Allergictoironing · 30/10/2022 18:06

A quick comment about the chicken - NO cooked bones, meat (and skin) only. The bones can splinter and puncture the intestines 😮

Toddlerteaplease · 30/10/2022 19:45

Or the feline mistakes your finger for. Bone and chews on that instead. Ouch!

And the Whisker/Width ratio

Not sure how relevant it is to fitting their bidy through a gap (mine have long whiskers and culd fit a London Bus through let alone their lardy arses )

But if they eat in a bowl that rouches their short whiskers they don't like it .
Male Cat whined at me till I swapped his food to a bowl with the wavy scalloped edges . (I'm sure he'd have coped but any excuse to whine at me Halloween Grin )

Whiskers are pressure sensors, rather than tape measures.. The pressure information relayed back to through their whiskers (long or short) tells them about the gap dimensions.

Omg just look at him
Holding his tail. Cuteness overload!

softplayfail · 31/10/2022 17:16

My daughter received a scratch today. Drew blood. She tried dragging his toy fishes from him when he was playing and he got her. If you like me thought that cats had claws at the end of their paws your wrong. My daughter has decided there called ouchies and he hurt her with his ouchies.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/10/2022 17:54

She won't do that again!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/10/2022 18:01

Your DD won't understand that Peppa is a little feral kitten but hopefully she'll learn from this .
(My DS did he was pestering our old cat , I kept dragging him away and telling him "No" . Cat told him "No" , he listened ! )

LeMoo · 31/10/2022 18:08

Oh that picture! 😍

Like your Toddler learning how to be gentle, Peppa also needs to learn. He should grow out of it, which is where litter mates come in handy - they really do have needles on their paws at that age!

Peppa caught a spider. His first kill

Way to go, peppa. Took my feral kitten years to graduate to living creature!

softplayfail · 01/11/2022 16:13

Confession time. He bought me over the spider and I obviously squealed because it was both dead and you know a spider. He dropped it and looked thoroughly pissed off I didn't accept his gift with the praise he wanted.

He decided to eat it. Ok first of all ew. Second of all my toddler decided to help.
It's only Tuesday and I had to yell do not stick that in your mouth! I wish I'd just stayed at work and canceled my annual leave

Grin

that’s hilarious

Allergictoironing · 01/11/2022 16:23

I remember Girlcat coming into the room looking very smug, with still waving legs sticking out of her mouth. She does like a spider that one.
