What's the broken thing in your house that everyone just puts up with?

I'll start. We have a three legged Henry Hoover, and any time anyone hoovers you hear lots of banging and "fuck offs" as it falls over every 3 seconds. It's been like it for five years and rather than replacing it we all have just grown to accept our disabled Henry.

What's that broken thing in your house that everyone just accepts and lives with, despite how annoying it may be? I feel every family must have one Grin

Top shelf cover in the freezer. I broke it shutting the door before I had pit the cover up. It falls out when you open that compartment has to be slotted back in. It needs a new cover, I just never get around to ordering one

NewYearCalavicci · 11/01/2022 18:47

@BeardyButton no it's just a bog ( boom tish Grin ) toilet fitted by my landlord my in year dot

snackcurator · 11/01/2022 18:47

My kitchen scales. I have lost the battery cover so keep having to tape it down and it keeps turning off mid weighing! I swear at the bloody thing every time and then wipe it down and pop it away for next time.

dragonflygirl1 · 11/01/2022 18:52

Our bathroom light has been broken for years. No window in there. We have an extension lead running from another room to outside the door, then a lamp plugged into it. You can kind of see what you are doing, but it's tricky when you are in the shower! We are still unable to get it fixed, so who knows how long it will stay like that!

pinkpirlie · 11/01/2022 18:52

Toilet seats in both our upstairs and downstairs bathrooms.
Have to warn guests they may slide and fall into the loo.

Downstairs has been broken since we moved in 4 years ago and we have every intention to replace the whole cloakroom, but just haven't got around to it.

Upstairs was new 6 months after moving in, but something went wrong and for the life of me I cannot work out how it attaches as it seems integrated (we are no DIY skilled).

Ilikenewbedding · 11/01/2022 18:56

Curtain rail in living room. Constantly comes loose by itself and you only find out when you open the curtains on a morning and the whole sodding things comes down and crashes to the floor.
Great entertainment for the neighbours though, I'm sure Grin

The fan on the oven has to be coaxed into life with a knitting needle, like starting a 1920s aeroplane.

CanIHaveAHolidayPlease · 11/01/2022 19:02

The radiators in the living room have deceded they're no longer going to come on when the central heating is on the timer setting. We wake up each morning and go down to a freezing cold room.

There's nothing wrong with the system according to the plumber. I cant be arsed to argue with the landlord about it Hmm

Tiled kitchen floor that looks like someone has taken a hammer to it. Can't take it up and replace it without ripping out the whole kitchen. That's a project a long way down the list.

Same here but it’s a laminate floor we spent a fortune on and my husband put down really badly. He claims it can’t be fixed without a major change to it which is weird because the reason he wanted laminate planks rather than sheet vinyl was so we could easily fix it if it got damaged.

PickAChew · 11/01/2022 19:17

If you have a wireless controller, it's possibly a problem with that, @canihaveaholidayplease

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 11/01/2022 19:20

To make mine worse, I'm quite handy at diy and have fixed loads of stuff when visiting friends or family. If I can't fix it for them, I'll have a good recommendation.

I had a hair dye stain on the tiles right next to the loo. At the time it happened, I meant to sort it asap as it could easily be mistaken for a poo stain, roll on 3 years of just staring at it every time I sat down, promising myself to sort it and yet as soon as I left the bathroom, I forgot.

When I fnally scrubbed it out, it literally took 5 minutes!

@Lacedwithgrace

All our light switches are upside down. They're old enamel switches and bamboozled the electrician who put every single one upside down. We're used to it now but it's confusing to put lights on in other houses
You’d be ok in the USA then.🤣
angela99999 · 11/01/2022 19:20

@MrsPear

Toilet seat. It moves around and won’t tighten. It’s the only toilet - shock horror - and being the only female I’m the most annoyed but still not got round to replacing it.
I know, they just won't tighten up properly. I think that almost every home I've had has had this problem. So many have flimsy fastenings that work loose. I bought really expensive toilets last time and had no problems at all, but the good seats don't fit the rubbish WCs

Thankyou.
Nope, we're old fashioned here. All wired sadly!

Pleezgivemestrength · 11/01/2022 19:23

Had a tv with a faulty aerial socket. Pic would go and would comeback on when we jumped up and down on the floor. Became a bit of a competition. Missed it when eventually replaced

angela99999 · 11/01/2022 19:27

Freezer drawers, they stick then crack and break if you try to open them. You can replace them but they're insanely expensive for a flimsy plastic box. The ones that are wire with a detachable plastic front are even more annoying.

maybloss2 · 11/01/2022 19:32

We have self closing toilet seat that doesn’t self close. Also two door handles, that fall off so regularly we no longer shut those doors in case someone gets shut in. A shower head pole that keeps working loose oh and a leaking sink.
My partner seems to think it’s my job to fix broken things so doesn’t even try to think how to solve any of these issues, let alone actually fix them.
I’ve told him I’m not the housekeeper/handy person and he’s welcome to try, so he’s stopped complaining in my presence. 🤷‍♂️

Ddot · 11/01/2022 19:35

My dyson will charge but only when it feels like it 🤬 kitchen tap drips, oven racks fell apart so using adjustable ones which fall down if you dont check them before use ( lost a few lunches). Oh the list is endless 😭

purplesequins · 11/01/2022 19:37

the 'clicker' on the gas cooker is broken.
we make do with a lighter...

At least get one of those gas lighters from the pound shop! They last ages and are much safer than a lighter.
LoveAndBeSilent · 11/01/2022 19:43
@LoveAndBeSilent hahaha same in our house! We have to slam the door or keep it shut with a (broken) chair when DCs are in bed!
Yes I forgot to say the oven closet chair is also broken!! And is the one that the DCs all fight to use daily 😂

AnAverageMum · 11/01/2022 20:02

Toilet roll holder, falls off anytime anyone but me uses it (I have the knack.) Many a guest have sheepishly brought me my toilet roll holder 😂

dementedma · 11/01/2022 20:10

This is such a comforting thread. People on MN always seem to have lovely houses and I feel that my flat is totally inadequate. Now I know differently!

Twospaniels · 11/01/2022 20:16

Roller blind in the Family bathroom.

If you try to lower it or raise it, it “may” throw itself off its bracket and into the bath in a fit of pique.

I warn visitors staying overnight to leave well alone.

I feel exactly the same! as I sit here looking at my two holes in living room wall still waiting to be fixed after a leak last winter
