Ten years. TEN YEARS of careful seasoning of my cast iron pan and he has "cleaned it". With wire wool.

After I pay Elon Musk to devise a trebuchet large enough to launch him directly into the Sun, does anyone have any advice as to whether this is even vaguely salvageable?

I used one of my cast iron pans earlier tonight (for this www.olivemagazine.com/recipes/vegetarian/cheesy-garlic-dough-balls/) and have just given it a pat of appreciation as I wandered through the kitchen having just read of this horror

Athenajm80 · 04/10/2021 00:16

Until a couple of years ago, I thought I'd read this in one of the many true crime books I've had over the years. I had been telling people about this great way of getting away with murder that an old lady had done (I didn't query how she got caught in the end, and nor did anyone I told) When I realised it was from one of my RD books for adults, I felt so stupid, but haven't admitted it to anyone till now. In my defence, no one ever corrected me so it's their own fault if they believed it and repeat it 😉

IamEarthymama · 04/10/2021 00:21

I have just bought a new cast iron pan, it arrived yesterday.
DW has been told not to touch it ever, never.

She walked through as I was cooking breakfast, Ooh, I’ll turn this off shall I?

I just said Spoony Fucker and she scarpered!

My sympathies OP, 💐

Many many years ago when I first started in the hospitality trade I washed the egg pan. Now this probably wont mean much to anyone who hasnt worked in a professional kitchen but lets just say that I was lucky to walk out alive!

I tell that story whenever I start in a new job to reassure the chefs that whatever mistakes the servers/porters/washer ups may make, it will never be as bad as washing the egg pan. In fact it became a saying in my last place "At least he didnt wash the egg pan eh Pyong?!" :o

Mamanyt · 04/10/2021 00:57

It can be re-seasoned. Careful coating with a THIN coat of good oil, followed by an hour in a slow oven. Repeatedly. Gentle cleaning. VERY gentle cleaning. And it will take time.

And yes, launch him into...well, I'll quote Pink Floyd here, "Set the controls for the heart of the sun."

I used to care for an elderly woman who had a pan with a label on "for scrambled eggs only" Nobody was allowed to touch this but one day she wanted scrambled eggs. I agreed with her that using the microwave just wasn't the same and she eyed me up and gave permission to use the pan When I left the job she said "but you make me the best scrambled eggs. Who will do them now?" 🥺🥺🥺
Hen2018 · 04/10/2021 01:34

He hadn’t seen you care for the pan or heard you talk about it over ten years?

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/10/2021 02:00

He heard he just didnt listen

KissedintheDark · 04/10/2021 06:13

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

Did he know about the seasoning? I've never heard of it.
Did he know about the seasoning ? I don't think op would have held back about it. Grin Grin
echt · 04/10/2021 06:19

I use the pans lovingly seasoned by my late DH. There's one solely for toasting spices before grinding.

OP, YANBU. A swift, though not necessarily merciful dispatch is order. :o

Yesitsbess · 04/10/2021 06:56

@AmandaHoldensLips

Give his car a nice clean just like he did your pan.
BWAHAHAHAHAAAAA. Seriously considering this.

I also would like to know the make of the mythical lasagne dish (and have second hand rage on your behalf).

Still catching up on the rest.

Am also incorporating "spoony fucker" into my vocabulary. You are all wonderful.

I have realised my dh is a spooner fucker but he has only done it once..

I'm more open mouthed with horror as I put my wok in the dishwasher. Am I cast out!Shock.

Meercat3 · 04/10/2021 07:49

I'm loving this thread!I have dreamt of having a cast iron pan for many years. Can anyone recommend a good one?

BoomChicka · 04/10/2021 07:52

@FelicityBeedle @mathanxiety this is the biggest tragedy! It was brought to mine for a party buffet and never claimed after, the owner clearly did not understand the value GrinSad and now it's gone.

BoomChicka · 04/10/2021 07:54

I was on a thread a few years ago trying to find a mythical lasagne dish and I don't think one was ever agreed on, I think someone even contacted Dolmio regarding the ones they used to give away Grin

Nope, I house shared with a Chinese guy, he threw his wok in the dishwasher and had never heard of seasoning.
SunshineCake1 · 04/10/2021 09:34

That's a relief! Thanks @sashh. My friend had said to be careful putting it in the dishwasher but the only issue I've had is needing to tighten the handle a couple of time.

PL15namechange · 04/10/2021 09:55

I have a very old cast iron pan - it's actually DPs. When we moved in together it appeared from his loft, covered in bat shit, and rusty.

It got shoved in our loft for 10 years until we moved again and I decided to try to save it.

The seasoning was flaking, and there was rust everywhere. I scrubbed it with salt and lemon juice and wire wool to get back to clean metal, then wipes it over with a high smoke point oil (can't remember which one!) and stuck it in the oven on max for ages.

Pic attached (teaspoon for scale) it's an amazing thing, apparently DPs GGF made it for his GGM. DPs DF would be over 100 now if he was still alive, so it's really really old and very sentimental.

As a result I'm scared to use it!

I am going to launch DP into the SUN for this.
SunshineCake1 · 04/10/2021 10:09

@PL15namechange using it sounds less aggressive than you cleaning and seasoning actions. Use and enjoy!

I know, and you're right. I need to fry bacon lardons in it or something I think to get it really slick.

I really don't want to have to attack it again because I did something stupid - it took bloody ages and gave me a dead arm!

poohaloo · 04/10/2021 10:38

My ex
Threw away the Christmas gravy
Used my dressmaking scissors to cut paper
And scoured my le cruset, non stick and enamel and cast iron dying pan with a Brillo pad

We are still good friends.... he's stopped mentioning gravy gate now as he knows it was a nail in his coffin

Yesitsbess · 04/10/2021 10:49

It was gravy made lovingly from meat juices, a fine stock and a little alcohol to deglaze the pan. Then boiled down to just the right consistency to allow the dish to really sing whilst simultaneously bringing it together, wasn't it @poohaloo ?

None that you can get in the UK I don't think. And mine belonged to my great grandmother, as did her sour dough starter and the crock it lives in. My kids grew up on homemade bread from a sourdough starter that was first made and proofed in about 1865, and it is still healthy and going strong. Eventually, I will buy another crock and split it for my DILs.
