To feel "posh"

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

I buy new clothes for my kids, I grew up with hand me downs and charity shop clothes not because my parents couldn’t afford new but because they didn’t think it was worth spending the money on kids.

My partner and I did a job a few years ago that required some foreign travel. We were chauffeur-driven to Heathrow, where we caught a business-class flight to Hong Kong, and stayed at the Peninsula.

It all felt slightly unreal.

Fluffmum · 23/07/2021 21:00

My son had osh kosh clothes in 1993 when he was a toddler. My parents bought him loads of stuff when my Dad worked in the US. I felt posh when he went to playgroup 😂

Lnd, that is a beautiful story but also they can be very personalised what if his wife doesn't like them!

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 23/07/2021 21:17

@Confusedandshaken I love that .. it’s the little things isn’t it? 💕
Ds is a skint student, but just announced he’s going to buy a butter dish for his new flat 😂 because obviously I’m a heathen and keep mine (usually not real butter either) in the fridge. He’ll be telling that story on a thread like this one of these days..

saveyourbreath · 23/07/2021 21:22

I have a mulberry handbag and an APC one. I have a YSL one arriving in the post this week.

I work full time with 2 kids, run the house, keep everything going (my DH is good too though) so I feel like I’ve earned those bags.

@Lndnmummy

A few years ago I read about a poster on here who’d brought a Christmas bauble with her son every year. Fancy ones like from Liberty’s or Harrods. They’d make a day of it and go into town, have lunch and pick their Baubles. Then when he got married she gifted them all to him and his wife. It was such a lovely story and I couldn’t look at my B&Q baubles the same way that year so I decided to shamelessly steal her idea. I’ve now got a very fancy Christmas baubles collection and my dh jokes every year that someone will break the family heirlooms.
Oh we do this! The shops vary as sometimes the destination shops aren't as lovely as you imagine, last year we bought them from Tiger as we just happened to be in there but have done Liberty etc.

Yes I was always wondering about that. My youngest future wife/husband will hopefully not mind the ghastly priced unicorns and butterflies 😬

I’ve come back to add about Clark’s. When Id been with dh a couple of months I mentioned dd needed proper shoes now she was walking , he suggested going to Clark’s to get measured. I’d already made up an excuse as to why I wasn’t going to buy any that very day (because for some reason I couldn’t admit I would be buying them second hand off eBay. )Just getting her feet measured there felt posh to me. She tried the loviest shiniest shoes on. He went back while I was in the baby change in the shopping centre and bought them in 2 different colours , put the bag under the pram and didn’t say a word. I looked him in the eyes and had to stop myself from crying !he said it wasn’t even because he thought I couldn’t but because he wanted to. Every pair of shoes she’s had since then have been Clark’s and it is their thing to go get shoes and a Mac Donald’s. I love feeling posh looking at the shiny shoes lined up in her wardrobe.

I had the same tradition with both my DC. I would never give the decorations away because they constitute our family Christmas at my house and we had a very enjoyable tradition of putting the decorations out. My tree wouldn't be my tree without the Llama on top and all the slightly mad baubles bought by us all over the years. I presume my DC will establish their own rituals with their new partners and families.

I might actually get the hoodie for my UK beach holiday grin ❤️“

I have looked at these towelling shorts and hoodie and am longing for them. What utter luxury to have these special cosy, organic cotton shorts specially for trips to the beach or after swimming or gardening.

That’s one of the most loving and enchanting gestures I’ve ever heard of.

Allycott · 23/07/2021 21:59

When DD1 was 7 bought her a quad for Xmas - this was 1999 and it cost £800. Total extravagance but (then) DH was loaded so who cares😁

mummeeee · 23/07/2021 22:09

My 7-yr old ds and I were in our small Waitrose the other day, buying a couple of things we couldn’t get from other shops (never do a big shop there but buy nice wine as gift etc). At the checkout, I’m putting things through, chatting to checkout operator, when my phone rings and it’s older ds, who is at home with DH, they’re making some lunch.
7-yr old, after speaking on the phone, says dramatically ’Mum, stop, we HAVE to go back and get black olives, ds says we CAN’T make greek salad without them.’
I’ve taught ds to make Greek salad as I made it once and they mostly all like it….but I have to admit it made me think I’d raised posh kids!!Grin

Having Bahlsen biscuits rather than own brand or McVities

ArabellaScott · 23/07/2021 22:13

Borders dark choc/ginger biscuits instead of penguins in the lunchboxes.

ItPearl · 23/07/2021 22:15

The first time I bought something from Boden I felt very English !
(I'm Irish. Fewer people here have heard of Boden. If they have, I suspect they're on mumsnet. More people have heard of mumsnet than Boden).

Recently I bought something from Toast! I older, eccentric and quietly rich. The first might be true.

I tried once. I'll stick to Hellman's (or Heinz) Grin

I can do olive oil and lemon juice (real lemons - posh, me), and even a decent Ceasar. Mayo - no!

We live near a Waitrose and you had some fantastic stuff - I once heard a dad say “Lucien, no no no, those aren’t the melba toasts you like” and almost died trying not to laugh 😂

I remember in the early 2000s mocking Nigella for giving her kids Parmesan on pasta in her TV show (who would give KIDS expensive cheese?!?) Fast forward 20 years and there is DD snacking on finest Parmesan in her nursery lunchbox. Oh the shame 🤦‍♀️

Bertiebiscuit · 23/07/2021 22:18

Brunch with cocktails in Liberty's - I felt proper posh 😂😂😂😂
