To feel "posh"

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

YANBU OP. I totally get it.
When my DC were young, a Boden towelling shorts or a swimming cape thing would have felt like I had made it.
Normally, I would be getting them second-hand off eBay or from the NCT sale.
So new would feel fabulous.
I remember a column by India Knight in which she discussed the stress of preparing for a family holiday with keeping all the DCs' clothes clean and ready for packing. Her solution was simply to put in a huge Mini Boden order with a holiday wardrobe for each DC ready to go. Not cool India. Made me feel like crap.

I wore an evening gown to a Black Tie do. It’s beautiful and as I’m highly unlikely to ever go to another Black Tie thing, I might start wearing it to the shops 😁

Not buying per se but for having european habits that I heard are considered if not posh at least middle class. We have dinner at 8pm, everyone in the house owns and uses a bycicle. And my children are very used to going to restaurants that have table cloth Grin and eat a varied diet with lots of vegetables that I usually have to adapt when having their friends over as wouldn't go down too well. But their clothes come from the likes of Primark and H&M. So, definitely not posh

Paying school fees for children’s education.

FVFrog · 23/07/2021 18:55

I have a beautiful one hundred stars full length summer dressing gown. I always feel like someone from a thirties Agatha Christie when I put it on in the morning. I then put my back door shoes on and walk down the garden to let my chickens out, the epitome of posh Grin

GreyhoundG1rl · 23/07/2021 19:02

@MySecretHistory

Anyone who uses the word posh is not. You are safe. Enjoy your shorts (look at Vilebrequin or Orlebar Brown for posh)
Op says it made her feel good to indulge in something she wouldn't normally. Snooty comments like this are really uncalled for.

Having a coffee and cake that I buy in a coffee shop. A real treat and if I’m honest a complete waste of £6:50. I don’t do this often and often feel guilty afterwords. Think this is from years of not having ‘waste money’ My real posh feel is having my children by the same father and still being married. Yes I’m Posh and fortunate x

texasss · 23/07/2021 19:08

Both have had ponies since they were toddlers.

@irresistibleoverwhelm - I was very sad when my 2 got too big for JoJo!

Diva66 · 23/07/2021 19:17

I’m wearing a Boden linen shift dress. Am I posh?

No, but if you feel good it doesn't matter.
Redapplewreath · 23/07/2021 19:19

@FuckingHateRats

I regularly take my these kids into a bookshop, buy us all a new book and then decamp in the nearest coffee shop for hot drinks and cake, and to read our new books.

My mum thinks this is the epitome of extravagance 🤣🤣

This is just lovely! Flowers
ravenmum · 23/07/2021 19:20

I have a tub of fleur de sel, i.e. posh salt, that has been sitting in my kitchen since before Christmas as it is only used on posh salads, with the posh olive oil :)

Of course people who use the word "posh" are not posh, though! That's the whole point of the word. It describes some other, revered or hated status.

SummerBreeze1980 · 23/07/2021 19:20

@irresistibleoverwhelm - posted too soon! I've never taken mine to a live ballet but often took my DS to the live broadcasts at the cinema. Was really looking forward to taking my DD. We went to see the Nutcracker a couple of years ago...she spent the whole first half asking when she could have her ice cream (at the interval) and wasn't much better in the second half!!

DysmalRadius · 23/07/2021 19:21

I'm so posh I spend my Friday nights bitchplopping my cuntishness onto MN threads to try and bolster my flagging self-esteem by pretending I am the arbiter of what's posh or not despite having only minimal reading comprehension skills and an utter dearth of social grace.

LettyLoman · 23/07/2021 19:22

Towelling shorts have made a comeback?? How about towelling playsuits. I’m going to have a look. Btw anything towelling never has been posh.

Diva66 · 23/07/2021 19:23

@GreyhoundG1rl

Thank God! I don’t actually want to be posh, but I am feeling good because it’s so cool and comfortable in this hot weather.

GreyhoundG1rl · 23/07/2021 19:24

Oh dear, now we're on the "my dd likes ballet, this is evidence of my poshness" 😬
These threads always become so embarrassing.

Grin. I knew you were kidding Wink

LovelyIssues · 23/07/2021 19:28

I've never understood the fascination with Boden, Joules and GAP clothes. We've had a few bits and always found them to lose their colour and shape very quickly and look a bit drab?!

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 23/07/2021 19:30

We have a bidet in our bathroom. I've often been told this is posh, but I don't really get why.

DysmalRadius · 23/07/2021 19:30

I've never understood

Judging by your post, you could have stopped typing here.

Lovemusic33 · 23/07/2021 19:31

Almost everything I buy my kids feels posh, we were clothed in 2nd hand clothes from jumble sales, most our toys came from there too. My parents were not poor, my dad was just very tight and wouldn’t allow my mother to buy us new things unless it was Christmas.

Buying Sylvanian families made me feel posh when the kids were small, they showed no interest 🤣, only rich kids had them when I was a child.

Clarks shoes, only posh kids had them too so when dd started walking I felt posh taking her to Clark’s.

corkernewyorker · 23/07/2021 19:31

Forking out for all the things that my parents wouldn't pay for for me as a child. Fuck it. My two have private school, music lessons, sailing lessons, a good bicycle each and don't want for anything (I know we are extremely fortunate and I NEVER take this for granted). The little darlings also have had good manners and politeness drilled in to them and can be taken anywhere and behave appropriately - which makes me feel better than all the 'things' I can afford for them. Manners cost nothing.
