To feel "posh"

565 replies

leopardprintpants · 22/07/2021 19:48

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

We have a shopping area nearby with a number of charity shops and a great coffee shop. I love nothing better than to browse the bookshelves of the charity shops and then retreat to the coffee shop with my purchases for a huge toasted tea cake and coffee.

steff13 · 23/07/2021 09:10

@beigebrownblue

Balsamic vinegar from Modena, Best mozarella Fresh basil from our allotment Fresh tomatoes likewise Olive oil

Tricolour salad
Posh for some but for other communities working class.

Maybe it's more posh if you call it a caprese salad.

Sorry I’ve just looked up Bodensee towelling shorts and I’m perplexed as to why you reckon they’re posh 🤔 The fabric isn’t expensive and they’re sort of gapey….I think they’re naff and chavvy for day time wear

You actually took the time to go and Google those shorts in order to be as spiteful & derogatory about them as possible? Seriously? Your life must be so empty and bitter.

ScrollingLeaves · 23/07/2021 09:14

The towelling shorts are not even comparable to chinos etc anyway.
Their function is as practical and very comfortable wear - very soft and absorbent and with colourful, apt patterns- for young children on holiday having fun near water, sand, grass mud, picnic food and so on.

The luxury lies precisely in their being something to buy for holiday or weekend play only, without the smartness of plain chinos, or the year round practicality of jeans. An additional sense of luxury would be because getting something from Boden.

turbonerd · 23/07/2021 09:15

I still feel posh when I buy food to eat when we are travelling anywhere.
My parents always packed our sandwiches and we had a flask and thermos with beverages each to last the journey. Smile
I feel posh even just getting a burger in the petrol station!

peaceanddove · 23/07/2021 09:28

Admittedly, I grew up rather pampered as I was privately educated and we lived in a naice, large detached house on a smart estate (all respect to my lovely Dad for providing this, considering he grew up in a council house with no indoor loo).

But it still impresses me how casually our DDs treat eating out on a very regular basis. They're always meeting their friends for lunch at 'posh' cafes or coffee in Starbucks. Going out/out for dinner happens very regularly too. When I was a teen in the 80s stopping for a milkshake in Wimpy was the height of sophistication 😍😍😍

Eileen101 · 23/07/2021 09:42

When I brought a jar of pasta sauce in Waitrose yesterday Grin I'd been to collect a bundle of second hand clothes for DD for nursery from a nearby town on my lunch break. I was doing spaghetti for tea and normally I'd make the sauce, but needed to get a few things done in the afternoon for work before the kids got back from nursery at 4.30. so on my way back from the other town, I called in at Waitrose for a jar sauce. I had a word with myself in the car Grin buying something easily made for a comparatively high price Grin but I just wouldn't have the time, and the kids would be shattered from nursery so knew dinner needed to be ready when they got in.

Oh and I also have a frugi habit like pps, although only in the sale. The clothes are so soft and bright! Supermarket clothes for boys are dull, repetitive and covered in paw patrol or mine craft logos. I do either sell on or hand them down to DD though (or both). Some of DSs stuff still look in excellent condition after being worn by both.

nocturnalcatfreetogoodhome · 23/07/2021 09:52

I bought an awful lot in the ando sale.

My husband asked when we were moving the Mayfair when he saw the receipt.

Beyond that we’re very basic.

We got cutlery from made too. And I’ve grown my own veg this year that makes me feel like nigella bloody Lawson!

😉 you explained it WAY better than me!

Thankyou

@doorornottodoor

Perrier - that reminds me of Orangina. That felt super posh when it first arrived in the UK in the 80s!
Also San Pellegrino - affectionately known as 'Tory Fanta' in our house Grin
pinkfanman · 23/07/2021 10:42

I feel posh when I wear my Toast Linen apron to cook in, it was such a treat.

windmill26 · 23/07/2021 11:02

@Maggiesfarm You are thinking of the old Burberry before Christopher Bailey and then Riccardo Tisci took over. It hasn't been chavvy for a while ,in fact is very fashionable.

windmill26 · 23/07/2021 11:27

Also,to the people that keep saying that Boden is chavvy etc... You don't know what you are talking about! Boden is a bit safe ,a boring choice if you are really into fashion and trends but it is definitely not chavvy!
I would put it in the same category as M&S,Jonh Lewis,The White Company,Gap,Hush,J.Crew and the kind.Safe ,clean-cut middle class attire.When wearing it you are not setting the fashion world on fire but you don't look like a chav either (far from it!).

MiamiPants · 23/07/2021 11:39

Oh yes I feel so middle class (which is very posh to this working class background East End girl!) when my DC wear Boden. Also Jojo stuff I feel the same.

They have the towelling dresses for the beach.

It's funny as a lot of my stuff is Boden but that doesn't make me feel posh.

MiamiPants · 23/07/2021 11:40

@FuckingHateRats

I regularly take my these kids into a bookshop, buy us all a new book and then decamp in the nearest coffee shop for hot drinks and cake, and to read our new books.

My mum thinks this is the epitome of extravagance 🤣🤣

Oh my.

The next bad weather day I'm going to do this!

My DC would LOVE it!!

MiamiPants · 23/07/2021 11:41

@MySecretHistory

Anyone who uses the word posh is not. You are safe. Enjoy your shorts (look at Vilebrequin or Orlebar Brown for posh)
Anyone who says things like this is the type of "posh" that the rest of us call "snooty" - not posh.

Posh isn't necessarily a bad thing. But snooty is.

RosieLemonade · 23/07/2021 12:04

The pure anger on this thread about things being called posh is hilarious. I've not seen spite like it.
Anytime I buy any item of clothing not from a supermarket I feel posh to be honest. Yesterday I got DD plimsolls from Next and branded trainers JUST for PE. Felt like a millionaire.

turbonerd · 23/07/2021 12:13

Oh, I missed the sneery posters! Will have rtft in a bit.
England (possibly all of UK, but mostly England) cracks me up no end with some of the snobbery on display, so I will need to settle in with mocca and a fancy cake to reap the full benefits!
I worked in Kensington many moons ago (am not from UK and have since moved back home «where I came from»), and oh how I laughed at the «ladies» and sirs. I know they had the titles, it was just the way it was shoehorned into any conceivable situation Grin.
Oh golly! This will be fun!

ScrollingLeaves · 23/07/2021 12:17

“MySecretHistory

If you look at the thread, it is about a feeling of “poshness” (n.b. the inverted comas to show the word as a colloquial, generally understood term); and about something which, relative to what a person had as a child - and indeed probably completely beyond their reach when they were a child- seems luxurious, privileged and special by comparison - hence the little plastic character bottle of bubble bath seeming fit for a queen.

The thread is light hearted and intended for people to relish small pleasures or be amused.

The children’s bookshop trip is a lovely example which a lot of people reading might well imitate or adapt, as I know I shall. Whether it is Foyles or Daunt Books followed by tea at Fortnum and Masons; Waterstones and one of their cafes, or the local library followed by Greggs - it doesn’t change the basic idea.

LittleGwyneth · 23/07/2021 12:18

@VictoriaLudorum

This is the saddest post I have ever read here.
If someone else feeling a bit bouji for buying Boden shorts makes you sad then I would suggest that you're the biggest loser on this board.
saraclara · 23/07/2021 12:20

I just googled those shorts. I'd love to get those fish ones for my granddaughter!

LittleGwyneth · 23/07/2021 12:24

The other day I went to the deli down the road to get cheese to take to a a dinner party, then Majestic for wine, and Waitrose for some house bits. Got a black cab to the dinner and felt quite excited by how grown up and fancy my life was that day. It's a nice feeling. Not sure why people are being so snide about it.

Also to those saying that posh people don't use the word posh: I went to boarding school, I had a pony, my parents house has its own postcode and people in my family have titles. I'M POSH POSH POSH POSH POSH.

nocturnalcatfreetogoodhome · 23/07/2021 12:27

We also upgraded to premier economy on a flight once. My God I felt like Richard Branson.

SummerBreeze1980 · 23/07/2021 12:39

@MotherWol - it is so nice to have that feeling of actually have a choice of item not just having to find the cheapest thing from Argos!
