Places you have visited with a strange vibe

Hi. I'm off to Saltburn (near Whitby) tomorrow and I feel sick. I visited last March. The weekend before the lockdown.

The place was so eerie. I was actually freaked out on the pier and had to run off it. I actually managed to sleep at night but I honestly didn't think I would.

The cottage was surrounded by cliffs and there was a Victorian lift and a small morgue by the beach. I'm not sure whether these have anything to do with it.

Has anyone else had this feeling from a place they have visited?

Masham in Yorkshire, the whole area, including the forbidden gardens, there is something really dark and horrible, and wrong about that area.

Weirdly enough Glastonbury festival. I feel that the whole festival is possibly quite occult, and harnesses a lot of energy along the local ley lines which is used by druidic/ wiccan groups in the area to magnify their practice.

Canterbury did it for me, we only went there for the day to see the sights but it just felt off and I was very happy to leave.

I’m not woo, but as a teenager of 13 or 14, lived in v old house (built in 1600s) had a weird moment. There was a big internal window in the bathroom wall, facing out onto the landing (guess the room was very dim tho why not at least put in frosted glass?!!) Anyhow, I’d got up in the night for the loo. About to open the door to go back to bed but something started tapping on the window. Nothing on earth would have made me open that door to see what was out there. Had to call mum to rescue me.

I'm the same about Saddleworth Moor.
I found Tyneham village in Dorset both sad and interesting. here

@Tyredofallthis1

Bradford town centre. There is something very off about it, imo. Apologies to those from Bradford, but the town centre is just depressing, in soul rather than anything else.

Once went to an amateur play in Bradford town centre. We got there around 6pm, long before it started, so had a drink before finding the theatre. It was winter, so dark, with a full moon, and the place was utterly empty and it felt soul sucking. I've seen a few things advertised at St Georges Hall which I fancy but I don't feel like going back.

Me too! We stayed overnight coming back from a road trip to Scotland and went out for a dinner…..such a creepy feeling we had…couldn’t wait to go back to the hotel and leave in the morning

Seems I previously replied to wrong post ….

The Catacombes in Paris.

TheWashingMachine · 04/06/2021 20:10

I visited Townsville in the 80s arrived in the middle of the night, (the plane was delayedfrom Singapore) my parents did not have much money and their friend who was driving us somewhere up the coast had gone home. We waited in the airport for hours with the Townsville chief of police who told us all about how he liked to wear tights. Completely surreal but nothing strange.

Shining Cliff woods in Derbyshire. Awful, almost sinister atmosphere there. Wouldn’t go again if you paid me!

Woollff · 04/06/2021 20:16

Gougane Barra forest in Ireland. Something really sinister in those woods, though absolutely beautiful.

Catscrat · 04/06/2021 20:24

Another vote for the Underground hospital in Jersey....I visited it when I was a child some 20 years ago now and still remember the feeling of unease and claustrophobia.

Tewksbury and Gloucester both creeped me out, the atmosphere felt oppressive.

elizabethdraper · 04/06/2021 20:34

BURNLEY in Lancashire
Couldn't wait to get out of the place

Ljcoolgran · 04/06/2021 20:38

Slapton Sands in Devon. I wasn’t aware of the history when we visited, many years ago, but I’ve never been back. Awful sad atmosphere 😢

Workinghardeveryday · 04/06/2021 20:39

@RevolvingPivot I totally agree with you about Saltburn. A couple of years ago dp and I went for the day while kids were at school, was so weird. I had this weird feeling the whole time, the place is very very strange, I don’t know exactly why but it made me feel so uncomfortable.
Makes me think if something awful happened there in the past or something?!!
Never been back!

Frazzled2207 · 04/06/2021 20:42

I’m on hols in Somerset at the moment and gonna have to go to Glastonbury to check out what you all say!!!

Violinist64 · 04/06/2021 20:45

I found Carlisle very depressing. It was bad weather anyway and everywhere seemed dark and oppressive. It had a strange feeling altogether.

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 04/06/2021 20:47

Bethesda.

Any flooded quarry

I love Royal Victoria Country Park and have camped there so have been there at night too but I totally agree it has a 'feeling' to it. It is beautiful but always feels as if there is something else going on that we can't see.

Hungerford - went there a couple of years after the awful shooting - I felt like we were intruding. The locals were welcoming but I didn't feel right being there.

Thatched B and B in Charmouth - stayed there about 30 years ago with exH (he doesn't get the honour of being exDH). Very old, beautiful, quaint cottage but full of dark wood and panelling and heavy doors. No ensuite. Was completely petrified the whole time and couldn't sleep, felt if I did something would 'get me'. Couldn't bring myself to go to the loo in the night even though I was bursting. worse place I have ever slept (or not slept).

Glasto - agree it is an odd place and does attract some damaged individuals. I used to like to go there and enjoyed the cafes and slow pace but went 2 years ago and was really disappointed, the town had lost it's good vibe and felt tense and touristy. The Tor, which used to feel quite spiritual, was heaving and full of people being t**ts - including a naked woman and her vicious dog!

Agree re Salisbury - always feels odd and slightly out of kilter and also Arundel Castle - there is a room there with a arched window (probably lots to be honest) but one particular one made me feel uncomfortable - exH took a photo of me sat by it and I feel uncomfortable looking at the picture still - it's as if I am back there - I have the same feeling.

Local to me is George Staunton Country Park - have always felt a strange deja vu there and an odd feeling of sadness and, to an extent an incongruous anger, that the house that was there has been knocked down (in the 1960s I think). I feel connected to it but I have no idea why. I have asked my parents if we went there when I was little and we did but nothing special or odd happened.

I am not a 'woo' kind of person yet, like others, I seem to be aware of the differences some places have.

Lickedmylollyandneversaidsorry · 04/06/2021 20:48

I remember going to stay with relatives in Canterbury as a young girl (mid 90s) and finding it really weird and creepy there. Don't think the castle helped. Confused

RattlesnakesUnfold · 04/06/2021 20:51

Arnside, near Morcambe Bay.

Creepy expanses of quicksand and a bore tide that rushes in so fast all the birds stop singing.

olidora63 · 04/06/2021 20:55

Hargate forest and Hurst woods in Tunbridge Wells...both really creepy!!

Tootingbec · 04/06/2021 20:57

The village of Oradour Sur Glane in France. Give it a google. So creepy and heartbreaking.

janj2301 · 04/06/2021 21:03

Alcatraz, sucked the life out of every living thing, very interesting but coulnd't wait for the boat back

Silkal · 04/06/2021 21:08

Pericombobulations I know exactly where you mean in Trerice. I felt weird in that corridor. Also a holiday let that DH and I stayed in Llanidloes. I was in my own in there for a couple of hours and I was terrified.

Eggedy · 04/06/2021 21:09

I’ve been to places I’ve found depressing but I’ve never had a creepy feeling from a town or village. I don’t have a spiritual bone in my body and am cynical and have never had any paranormal experience or got weird vibes. Think concentration camps, prisons etc are different as you know the history.

I actually really like some of the places mentioned. I live in East Grinstead (been here 10 years) and have never found it creepy. It definitely has a quirk but in a good way. I know there are Scientologists, Mormons etc around but I’ve never come across one.
We’re thinking of visiting Bodmin Jail this summer and after reading the comments I’m looking forward to it!

Beardie03 · 04/06/2021 21:12
