I’ve ruined the floor and feel so stupid

This morning our long awaited amtico flooring fitters arrived to prepare the floor. They spent hours levelling the floor with a special cement-like compound. They told me repeatedly not to walk on it and I fully understood. They then left and I continued with my work (currently working from home). I made myself a cup of tea ten minutes later and drank it whist speaking to a colleague on the phone....I think you can guess what’s coming.

Absorbed in the content of the call I (stupidly and absent mindedly) wandered over the hall to go and sit in the lounge as I often do when talking at length... slipped on the wet screed and collapsed in a heap on the edge of the stairs - in the process managing to cover the stair carpet and my clothes in the cement whilst throwing hot tea all over the freshly screened floor... not only did this happen, in my panic I tried to ‘fix’ it with a cake smoother- so now it looks absolutely atrocious...I cried - a lot. I have a lot going on at work at the moment but I have clearly fucked up massively and this is inexcusably dumb.

So what happened next you may wonder? A blubbing call to my husband who broke the news to the carpet fitters and bless them they are coming back tomorrow to assess and fix the damage. I can only imagine what they have said about me Blush

Here’s the thing though...I can’t face them. I literally am so embarrassed at how stupid I’ve been. I just know they will think I’m a complete twat and I just can’t face them tomorrow or next week. Please make me feel better and tell me what you would do. How do I face two men that literally told me not to walk on their work Confused

Just to give you all some closure - the guys came back and fixed it Grin they were absolute gents (even if they were smirking a lot at my explanation) my friend on the phone did actually think I was being assaulted - so when I rang her back to tell her what actually happened, she roared with laughter. I agree guys, I think this will go down in my family history as just another one of those funny stories 😂

Hi Op most of us has been there with something or another. Me twice!! I was having my bath sprayed with new enamel paint and I gave the guy a cup of tea putting the tea down on the corner of the bath while the paint was still wet. He must of thought I was so stupid 😅 Oh and that lovely fresh enamel I chipped a year later dropping a big Yankee candle on it! I fixed it with some special white modelling epoxy resin because I'm to ashamed to ask the bath guy back so soon! I still feel so stupid but I can laugh about it now. I wait until the kids are older incase anything goes wrong again with it! I wonder what your colleague on the phone thought while this was going on, sorry Op it's raw but you will laugh one day!

Homehaircuts · 15/05/2021 08:07

Sorry op should of read you last post. That's so funny 😂

SoupDragon · 15/05/2021 08:19

the guys came back and fixed it

Did they use a cake smoother?

Ifbutandmaybe · 15/05/2021 08:25

This should make you feel better , we had a floor done in our house but still had workmen working in other parts of house , even tho we put something across to try stop people going on floor one of other workman ignored and walked on floor 🙄 floor done again then a neighbour walking their dog off lead came up , dog decided to disappear into house and walked through screed Shock needless to say floor people werent too happy, but least we couldn't be blamed , but its a miracle wasn't me, as its sort of thing i'd do. Must have been horrible falling in the cement,

murakamilove · 15/05/2021 09:15

I’m so sorry op - this did make me chuckle. They will be lovely about it I’m sure. Please don’t agonise about it - you won’t be the first or the last. Hope your work settles down soon?

Thedramalama · 15/05/2021 10:07

Thank you all Smile I’ll be making a point to sit and relax this weekend as falling in a heap on wet cement has made me realise that my head is a bit full! And erm...no Soupdragon they didn’t use a cake smoother to fix it Blush I’m glad I gave you all a laugh Grin

You could try to be helpful by offering them the use of your cake smoother when they come to fix it?

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 15/05/2021 10:32

I'm glad to hear that it's all sorted Thedramalama. I think you deserve a quiet weekend Grin I hope you weren't too sore after the fall.

@DandelionRose

Spicedlatte Personally I love seeing paw prints or kids boot prints or bird prints in concrete. Really love it, it always makes me smile when I see it. There's a repaired paving slab near where I live with paw print in it and I always look out for it. A moment in time preserved.
I carved/dug out my initials in the pavement behind my parents house when they re-tarmacced it when I was eight years old. 37 years later it’s still there...
TruJay · 15/05/2021 20:06

This happened to my DH on Friday. He’d self-levelled an en-suite bathroom floor to be ready for the tiler next week. Finished and left the job - nobody go in the room etc etc he got a call an hour later “Can you come back, the puppy got in and run through it all and now there’s paw prints everywhere!” Grin
It happens OP, it can be rectified but I understand why you’re so angry/upset!

I agree. The photo of the cake smoother with the attached sock was wonderful.

Aprilwasverywet · 16/05/2021 10:13

Morning everyone! This has had several nominations for Classics. We're going to transfer the thread to a wire rack to cool and then carefully move it over to Classics (before the OP gets her hands on it Wink )

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 17/05/2021 11:22

Excellent Grin

spiderlight · 17/05/2021 12:43

I've just thought of another (not me this time though, for a change). A few years back our road was resurfaced. A day or two after the lovely new tarmac had been laid, the men came to add the new road markings. They parked up at the top of the road, which is quite a steep slope, and a huge container of white paint fell off the back of the lorry, leaving an enormous splash mark which is still there to this day. It ran right down the hill as well so there's miles of it.
