I’ve ruined the floor and feel so stupid

This morning our long awaited amtico flooring fitters arrived to prepare the floor. They spent hours levelling the floor with a special cement-like compound. They told me repeatedly not to walk on it and I fully understood. They then left and I continued with my work (currently working from home). I made myself a cup of tea ten minutes later and drank it whist speaking to a colleague on the phone....I think you can guess what’s coming.

Absorbed in the content of the call I (stupidly and absent mindedly) wandered over the hall to go and sit in the lounge as I often do when talking at length... slipped on the wet screed and collapsed in a heap on the edge of the stairs - in the process managing to cover the stair carpet and my clothes in the cement whilst throwing hot tea all over the freshly screened floor... not only did this happen, in my panic I tried to ‘fix’ it with a cake smoother- so now it looks absolutely atrocious...I cried - a lot. I have a lot going on at work at the moment but I have clearly fucked up massively and this is inexcusably dumb.

So what happened next you may wonder? A blubbing call to my husband who broke the news to the carpet fitters and bless them they are coming back tomorrow to assess and fix the damage. I can only imagine what they have said about me Blush

Here’s the thing though...I can’t face them. I literally am so embarrassed at how stupid I’ve been. I just know they will think I’m a complete twat and I just can’t face them tomorrow or next week. Please make me feel better and tell me what you would do. How do I face two men that literally told me not to walk on their work Confused

@FizzyPink omg I’m so glad that wasn’t me 😂😂😂

Reminds me of when I moved in to a new build, after a month or so there was a damp patch on the ceiling in the living room, the builder came round and put some sealer on and told me wait a few weeks for it to dry, few weeks later thought I'd see if it was dry... ended up with some nice finger holes in the ceiling.
The builder had to come back, cut a hole out of my ceiling and re plasterboard it and paint Grin

I could see a lurcher or a greyhound as a Simone.
Great pictures Thedramalama Grin

The sock! Stuck to the cake smoother! WEEPING.

CassandraCross · 13/05/2021 15:15

@SoupDragon

😂😂😂

Look on it this way - you've brighten up the day for lots of MNers! Think of it as having performed a random act of kindness.

You really have brightened up the day, OP. The pictures of the floor and the cake smoother with attached sock are just brilliant.

Dying at the Harry Enfield sketch 😂

Be kinder to yourself, this will have happened many many times.

AlCalavicci · 13/05/2021 15:21

Many years ago i spent days sanding a floor ( floor boards ) so that I could varnish them .
The vanish that I used have a very high VOC so I opened all the windows .
I made sure the cat and dog were locked in another room and I worked towards the door, proper proud of done every thing right.
Only I I did not foresee it been a windy evening and the laburnum tree in my neighbour's garden decided to have all its petals blown off into my house and stuck to the varnished floor.
So when I came down the following day I had a yellow spotted floor it took a lot more sanding to get rid of the old varnish and petals and a lot more re-varnishing

Crimblecrumble1990 · 13/05/2021 15:22

Ah don't stress. The reason they told you repeatedly not to walk on it is probably because it happens so often! You will feel better about it in the morning and will have forgotten all about it in a weeks time. Just a funny story to tell. :)

Thedramalama · 13/05/2021 15:22

Thank you all so much, I feel a thousand times better now - I’ll let you know if I do the same tomorrow 😂

It is fixable, adults, kids, animals, they have seen it all.

Unsure33 · 13/05/2021 15:37

My OH had a very long and difficult job removing and laying a large cracked tile by the sink . While the adhesive was drying I had strict instructions not to step on it and he put a chair in front of it .

About an hour later I had to fill the kettle . Not sure what was going through my head but I actually just moved the chair and stood on it . Squishing all the adhesive out .

I did try and cover it up by blaming the dog but failed . The whole thing had to come up again . oH was not happy .

Chaotica · 13/05/2021 15:38

@Jasmine245

Sorry that made me laugh. You are being very honest owning up. I would have blamed the dog.
The dog... and his/her tea... who even tried to fix it! Dogs, eh. Can't trust 'em. Grin

Sorry OP. I know you feel bad but I'm sure there's no harm done and they will have seen it loads before. (When we had a floor done like this, we were fortunate enough to be able to go out and stay out.)

Puddstalk · 13/05/2021 15:39

I laughed so much I had tears running down my face - the cake smoother finished me off!

DisappointedOfNorfolk · 13/05/2021 15:43

At least you didn't screed it yourself (well mostly dh) and not read the instructions properly - the bit I 'helped' with...

We did, thought it would take a couple of hours to dry so did the hallway at 9pm... no access to the stairs until 2:30am... the dc fell asleep on the sitting room floor...Grin

Years ago ... a plumber was fixing my sink. He had his head underneath the pipework. I was standing chatting to him.

He passed me a jug of dirty water from the blocked pipework and said - get rid of that will you.

I did - by chucking it down the sink, so it went all over his face.

He was amazingly nice about it.

orangesmartiesareace · 13/05/2021 15:47

I laughed out loud when I got to the words cake smoother.

otterbaby · 13/05/2021 15:48

This is hilarious - bloody Simone!

Badgertadger · 13/05/2021 15:50

@vera99 a Honda pessary. Brilliant!

OP you've really cheered up a shitty afternoon. I'm sure it'll be fixed tomorrow but I've never found biscuit bribery to go amiss when eating humble pie.

Confusedandshaken · 13/05/2021 15:53

This made me wince and laugh in about equal measure. I feel for you OP. Try and laugh it off tomorrow.

Am I wrong to long to see a video of this - in slow motion!

user1471538283 · 13/05/2021 15:58

You wont be the first to do this! You were just distracted! I've reversed into a neighbors car and not noticed because I had so much on!

muddyford · 13/05/2021 16:04

You won't have been the first and certainly won't be the last. I wouldn't worry. They'll put it right and go away chortling.

@helpfulperson

I bet they will turn up tomorrow and tell you tales of other customers who have done things as stupid or stupider.
This. It will have happened dozens of times.
MatildaTheCat · 13/05/2021 16:11

Get your cake smoother back out and make the builders a cake as a peace offering.

Run it under the tap first.
