I’ve ruined the floor and feel so stupid

This morning our long awaited amtico flooring fitters arrived to prepare the floor. They spent hours levelling the floor with a special cement-like compound. They told me repeatedly not to walk on it and I fully understood. They then left and I continued with my work (currently working from home). I made myself a cup of tea ten minutes later and drank it whist speaking to a colleague on the phone....I think you can guess what’s coming.

Absorbed in the content of the call I (stupidly and absent mindedly) wandered over the hall to go and sit in the lounge as I often do when talking at length... slipped on the wet screed and collapsed in a heap on the edge of the stairs - in the process managing to cover the stair carpet and my clothes in the cement whilst throwing hot tea all over the freshly screened floor... not only did this happen, in my panic I tried to ‘fix’ it with a cake smoother- so now it looks absolutely atrocious...I cried - a lot. I have a lot going on at work at the moment but I have clearly fucked up massively and this is inexcusably dumb.

So what happened next you may wonder? A blubbing call to my husband who broke the news to the carpet fitters and bless them they are coming back tomorrow to assess and fix the damage. I can only imagine what they have said about me Blush

Here’s the thing though...I can’t face them. I literally am so embarrassed at how stupid I’ve been. I just know they will think I’m a complete twat and I just can’t face them tomorrow or next week. Please make me feel better and tell me what you would do. How do I face two men that literally told me not to walk on their work Confused

Dropped a tin of yellow oil based gloss on the drive. That took some shifting.

Spicedlatte · 13/05/2021 20:58

These things happen, if it wasn't you it would have been someone else. When our builders were pouring and smoothing a lovely new concrete ramp and floors for outbuildings I thought I heard our builder let out a little shriek but figured I must have imagined it. It turns out one of our chickens escaped and walked across all of it and back again, we now forever have chicken footprints all over them Blush

DandelionRose · 14/05/2021 09:32

Spicedlatte Personally I love seeing paw prints or kids boot prints or bird prints in concrete. Really love it, it always makes me smile when I see it. There's a repaired paving slab near where I live with paw print in it and I always look out for it. A moment in time preserved.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I laughed way too much! The pictures! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

My builders told me not to step on newly tiled floor. Obviously I forgot and stepped on it. Then suddenly realised. They spotted it immediately, it was literally a mm out, they redid it as they were perfectionist. They said what happened, before I could reply, they said bet it was one of your dogs, I just nodded......

Iwanttobeanonymous · 14/05/2021 17:34

Neighbours had their drive concreted. It was all completely barricaded off, as there was no way across without walking in wet concrete. Later after dark, we could see lights bobbing round outside. Some caller had not only climbed over, but had lifted his bicycle over and there were footprints and wheel tracks across the drive. Luckily the owners managed to contact the company who had laid the concrete and they were trying to rectify it by torchlight!!

peppermintpat · 14/05/2021 17:56

One day you will look back....

For now, it will be fixable. Not sure about your clothes or stair carpet but make light of it to the workmen and they won't think any less of you.

Ddot · 14/05/2021 18:00

That looks like my attempt at skimming the walls, not good but looks so easy, it's not!

thetis · 14/05/2021 18:01

I was told the screed would dry by X time. After that time, I had to take the dog to the groomer and we walked across the floor. It wasn't dry and we sank into it like quicksand and made such a mess. When the Amtico men came back, they laughed and re-levelled it. It's easy to fix

Toomuchtrouble4me · 14/05/2021 18:03

I would have blamed someone else.
But...you won’t be the first or last, and god knows with Amtico you’ve paid through the nose for the service.
And you’ll have a lovely new floor - I LOVE my Amtico. Never loses its beauty and cleans like a dream.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 14/05/2021 18:06

OP, you have such a good attitude. I'm sure you're not the first nor will you be the last to do something like that.

Love your cake smoother!

Crumpetsforthequeen · 14/05/2021 18:06

My DH is a floor fitter and omg his face when I was reading this to him 😂😂 he then proceeded to tell me tales of his work days so it happens, its OK (not gonna lie, his face was priceless the moment I mentioned cake smoother 😂)

kindlemanic · 14/05/2021 18:08

I work in flooring. Happens all the time. More awful is when the newly laid floor is damaged straight after being laid by fridges/washing machines being moved back into place by husbands! That also happens all the time but at least LVT floors are repairable!

Leedsfan247 · 14/05/2021 18:12

It’s very easily fixed I wouldn’t stress about it it. May cost a little more for the extra work and delay the fitting of the LVT but you won’t be the first.
It’s normally pet paw prints!

lolacola77 · 14/05/2021 18:12

I'm so sorry but I'm pissing myself 😂. I hope you can laugh about it soon 😚

Ddot · 14/05/2021 18:12

I painted my windowsill with gloss, closed the door (not properly) came back to make a cup of tea to find both my cats sitting on wet paint. I had to scrape the fur off the sill and repaint. And ended up with two bald bottom cats.

Tessabelle74 · 14/05/2021 18:31

This is exactly the kind of thing I'd do! Just laugh it off with the fitters, nothing to worry about Flowers

Sparklingbrook · 14/05/2021 18:39

I can envisage that totally-all in slow motion. Grin They'll sort it, and it'll be fine. Just keep thinking of the end result. You'll need a big sign or something so you don't do it again. or move out to a Travelodge.
Is the stair carpet going to be ok?

Please don’t attack yourself any further, we all do foolish things, these guys love people like us as it’s an extra job with extra money!

MidnightHangingTree · 14/05/2021 18:41

My dad was fitting a new kitchen tap for me and after he took the old one off, there was a bit of a limescale ring around the hole, so I got a cloth, held it under 'the tap' and went to turn the handle... except of course it wasn't there Blush He looked at me like he couldn't believe he'd produced such a stupid human Grin

I'm cackling that some part of your brain legitimately thought you could get the professional grade finish back, and no one would tell the difference... with a cake smoother GrinCake

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 14/05/2021 18:44

Lots of sympathy, Dramalama. Most of us can remember equally silly mistakes we've made -- whether we admit to them or not! One day you'll be the one comforting a mortified friend, with the story of the time you tried skating on wet screed. Meanwhile, have a Brew

Lalliella · 14/05/2021 18:51

Cake smoother 😂😂 Brilliant OP! I’m sure they’ll be able to fix it, good luck.

SkodaKodiaq · 14/05/2021 19:03

Cake smoother! 🤣🤣 I must ask - how is your friend on the other end of the phone?! Poor thing must've thought you'd been murdered

SkodaKodiaq · 14/05/2021 19:06

@Sunnyfreezesushi

They can fix it.... it isn’t a problem. My DS tiptoed over ours whilst still drying to steal snacks in the evening
Awwww! Is there little toe prints in it?!
