to think it's really cheeky to invite someone to a BBQ then expect them to bring...

...The BBQ!?

We were invited last week to a friends today for a BBQ. They called this morning asking to borrow our BBQ, we assumed there's had broken or the one they ordered hadn't arrived etc - but no. They don't have one. So we suggested they come to ours and bring some of the stuff they'd bought as our BBQ is very heavy and large (won't fit in the car without removing the child seats and lying all seats flat) but it turns out, that not only did they want us to bring our BBQ, they wanted us to leave it at theirs as they are having other friends this evening.

Was IBU to say no? That I didn't want to take our large BBQ and gas bottle to their house and leave it with them?

Let’s hear the full facts then?

Beautiful3 · 13/04/2021 08:06

There no way I'd be able to fit my gas bbq in my car with the bottle. Not only is it big and heavy but it's been out side for a year so rust would go every where! What a strange request. Your charcoal one would have been perfect, as its smaller and no gas bottle! I'm surprised they refused your sensible offer. Everyone knows how easy and cheap it is to buy charcoal from the petrol station! Sounds like you were only invited to bring the bbq for their friends in the evening! They could have still done a nice buffet and cooked pizza and chicken drumsticks in their oven?! Sorry but they dont sound like nice people op.

"Yes I don’t see what the problem in lending a bbq. It will cleaned, Op is a drama queen.
I bet she has lent a Henry hoover or something similar before.

Transporting a gas bbq is nothing like a henry Hoover! Gas bbq live outside and are rusted underneath. Seriously, you'd want to deal with that in your car?! I would lend most stuff including my old charcoal bbq but not my gas bbq. Why wouldnt you just buy one instead of asking people to lend theirs? That's like asking for their childs garden swing!!!

longwayoff · 13/04/2021 08:28

Grin hilarious. Thanks OPGrin

longwayoff · 13/04/2021 08:37

Be careful she doesn't invite you to her wedding 'Please bring a bridegroom. Penelope will bring the ring and Joanne is supplying the cake. I have a dress on loan from Bridezillas R Us. I will have the groom cleaned and returned to you after the 2 week honeymoon in the Maldives kindly donated by Aunty Sue. Additionally, I enclose your ticket to this event which will cost £50pp, non refundable and payable in advance.' Ta.

@GlendaPickle

Yes I don’t see what the problem in lending a bbq. It will cleaned, Op is a drama queen.

I bet she has lent a Henry hoover or something similar before.

I think the issue isn't asking to borrow a BBQ, I would have done the same had I invited people over then mine broke and I was really stuck and had exhausted other all other options (and if the person I was asking to borrow a BBQ off was coming to BOTH my BBQs and I promised to pay for the gas used, helped transport said BBQ and clean it after). This 'friend' arranged two BBQs (one the OP isn't even invited to!) assuming they could borrow OP's BBQ without asking first. It's the sense of entitlement and the assumption that is so cheeky here, and it shows a lack of respect for the OP or other people's time or belongings. Also it's a bit childlike, friend wants to be the fun party-throwing person while expecting the OP to do all the leg work. I had a friend like this so I totally get it, it's not just the BBQ, takers take all the time and OP needed to put foot down or else where would it end?
sue20 · 13/04/2021 08:52

How about they ask BEFORE arranging the barbecue? You say they asked WHEN ! Now they’ve gone “funny” lol. My advice you go “funny” and stay “funny”. Loads of people out there to become great friends with get rid of the defective ones quickly!!

JassyRadlett · 13/04/2021 08:54

Perhaps that person does not want her to host the bbq as she buys cheap farm foods meat and tries to pass it off as a M & S.

Most unintentionally hilarious ‘burn’ I’ve read in a long time.

Thanks Glenda!

expat101 · 13/04/2021 09:00

@GlendaPickle

OP knows that the other person in question reads this forum and is recruiting support and is not being truthful with the facts.

Attention seeking.

Perhaps that person does not want her to host the bbq as she buys cheap farm foods meat and tries to pass it off as a M & S.

Trot along Glenda bender, Don’t like what the Op serves? Bring your own meat to her bbqs or don’t attend. We know neither of you, but you are not helping yourself here so far.

Ffs, just return her belongings and move on.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/04/2021 09:07

@GlendaPickle
If you are the ‘friend’ or a friend / relative of the ‘friend’ in question, you’re really not coming off well.

LookItsMeAgain · 13/04/2021 09:09

@dotdashdashdash - What have you loaned them before that you now have to reclaim? I'd make sure that you have a list and if they have broken the one that you loaned them, be sure to ask them for a replacement to the same value. I'd love to be a fly on the wall with that conversation Grin Grin

Ddot · 13/04/2021 09:23

Cf didnt even offer to pick kids up, so bugger off

Mypathtriedtokillme · 13/04/2021 09:33

I’m a kiwi and the standard norm is what I call a “crate and a plate” as in you bring what your drinking and a plate of food to share/meat to cook

Bringing the actual BBQ at the last minute is a bit beyond reason.
Who the hell invites someone to a bbq when they don’t own one??

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 13/04/2021 09:34

Who invites people to a Bbq if they don’t own one? Weird.

KevinTheGoat · 13/04/2021 10:14

Glendapickle, you don't seem to like the OP very much. Do you two have a history?

VestaTilley · 13/04/2021 10:21

CFs! YANBU.

They can buy disposables if they haven’t got one. Or nip to Argos! You can buy a barbecue very cheaply: we did and it’s lasted us years.

myBumJuiceSmellsLikeRoses · 13/04/2021 10:47

I suspect if you'd left the BBQ with them you could probably add it to the list of things you haven't got back.

Cynical me thinks you might struggle to sort out a "convenient time" to collect.

gamerchick · 13/04/2021 11:08

Who asks to borrow a Henry hoover? Are you the CF mate Glenda? Buy your own shit.

I used to have parasitic friends like this. Always on the want like it was an entitlement. Always wanting you to do the running around after them.

I used to anyroad...

dotdashdashdash · 13/04/2021 11:13

Im begining to wonder if Glenda really is my friend. Though I've never tried to pass anything off as M&S because I never shop there 🤷 and I don't know what a farm foods is.

Other things they've borrowed and not returned are, decorating equipment (including rollers, pasting table, wallpaper stripper), cookware, shoes and probably the most expensive - an air cylinder for scuba diving. I really do need to get the stuff back!

OP posts:
Cantstopeatingchocolate · 13/04/2021 11:15

Well this thread got interesting quickly.
Glenda you're hilarious. Go buy a BBQ. That's not the kind of thing you borrow. Hoovers - ✅
Fold up table and chairs - ✅
Dirty outdoor pieces of equipment - ❌
I wouldn't take apart my BBQ legs and squeeze it in my car, even for my best friend.

Bluntness100 · 13/04/2021 11:30

Gotta laugh at the cheap farm foods ans passing it off as m&s jibe. Snobbiest thing I have ever read 😂😂😂

And would be even funnier if it’s coming from someone who can’t afford a bbq and then invites people to their gaff for a bbq.,,and tells them to bring it with them,

Madamum18 · 13/04/2021 11:43

Unbelievably ridiculous behaviour on their part!

Bargebill19 · 13/04/2021 11:46

Errr Glenda WAS your friend op. WAS!

00100001 · 13/04/2021 11:50

...a scuba diving air cylinder???

Confused
Middersweekly · 13/04/2021 11:51

This is the most hilarious cheeky fuckery request I’ve ever heard! 🤣 why on earth would they invite two sets of people round for a BBQ when they don’t own one? A small charcoal one I could understand might be a reasonable request to borrow but a large gas BBQ that would require dismantling?! WTAF?!
