To ask what you dreamed would be fabulous but is actually maybe a bit shit

I think this about lots of things to do with celebrity lives, when I was younger I thought it all would amazing now not so sure.

A particular one I have is that I always longed for a villa on the Italian lakes. We went to a hotel there one year for 5 days ( in the same village as George Clooney ) It pissed down for 3 days. Everything was dark and damp and that combined with the endless queuing for flights and the thought of maintaining a property in another country sort of did for the dream. Not achievable without a lottery win anyway but now I don't even want it.

Anyone else got stuff like this or that they actually got and then thought 'meh'. I seem to have it about more and more things as I get on - I just don't want stuff anymore. Is it just to do with age?

Vegas. I wanted 50's rat pack glamour.

I have this problem with a lot of places. E.g. Berlin, I want Weimar Republic, if I went to Russia I would want revolution era Russia.
I’m probably better off staying at home and reading.

Mr Frosty. Waited 22 years for that useless bastard

I came on to say exactly the same thing Grin

I was more excited than my DC when I bought them a Mr Frosty. All my friends wanted one when we were kids but none of us ever got one.

Grinding ice with it was like trying to cut steel with a pair of plastic safety scissors. The first time, half the ice had melted by the time I had managed to grind a glassful. The second time, the whole thing jammed and the handle snapped off, shattering my childhood dreams with it.

We went to Rick Steins ( not the very expensive one there, but the other one)
I'm not a fish lover at all but dh and children are. The food was just normal , nice but not worth the hype or the price tags. Had better in a normal pub , although the service was very good and the people really friendly and Padstow is worth a visit.
Marriage and having children is hard work. I think I was so naive about both for years. It's a slog.
I've got a cordless dyson, not the expensive one but mine is ok! It works well if you maintain it and wash out the filter and remember to charge it up. I like my one.
Lots of people complain about Dyson products though!

Sunrise at Angkor Wat. I loved the pre-dawn bit where you could hear the monkeys and the birds waking up, and the journey to the site in the pitch black was exciting. But then at sunrise it just kind of got lighter for a while, then it was daytime.

Agree re Paris. Went many moons ago for our 1st wedding anniversary. What a dump, and the locals are so rude. We love a city break, been on dozens all over Europe(including other cities in France) and the USA, the only time I've ever been mightily disappointed is our trip to Paris. It amazes me anyone ever returns.

We made a family attempt to live in the French Alps. We still dream about it, but the dream didn't match the reality at all. We'd never live somewhere that rural in the UK. We still might buy a place there, but probably won't!

Self catering holidays with other families. All just turns into 'who hasn't done the washing up recently' resentment (mostly because it was always us doing the clearing up).

@Cottagepieandpeas I wanted a Girls World as well and never got it - who knows if it was up to the hype

Musicals - another whole list, saw Les Mis when pregnant and queasy was counting the seconds. It was a highly expensive torture.

Ditto Cirque de Soleil boring and annoying - just reminded me of the Alan Partridge clowns

Paris is totally overrated. Dirty and boring.
LA was the same. Though I liked the climate. There was an overwhelming amount of homeless people with mental health problems. It was absolutely unexpected. I also felt unsafe in general. I like to run around a city the first few mornings to get my bearings, I managed one block in LA and freaked out that I might get murdered! Yet I've run around Manhattan at 6am in the dark and not had an issue at all.

But whale watching was the absolute business. We went in Santa Barbara, saw a ton of whales, gorgeous coastline, no sickness from anyone at all. And it hadnt occurred to me it was something I wanted to do, I only went because DD saw the sign on the pier.

We then saw a pod of dolphins for free when we were stuck in traffic in malibu. They were just swimming a bit out from the beach. Awesome!

@the80sweregreat

I wasn't keen on Disneyland Paris. The hotel buffet breakfast was nothing but a food fight and the queues annoyed me after a while ( even though I was part of the problem just being there!)
I remember Chessington when it was just a zoo and just one carousel! Theme parks rarely live up to their hype though.

Me too. I remember when it was exactly like that and called Chessington Zoo.

Lincoln Christmas Market for me. We lasted just over an hour. I imagined a magical day strolling round festive stalls, meandering around the cathedral, hot chocolate in cute cafes. Well it was hell on earth. Heaving with crowds so bad that you had to queue to walk down Steep Hill ( which is a road). A queue for a road! The stalls sold overpriced shite and the lovely cafe we normally go to were not only charging more for luke warm hot chocolate in smaller quantities than normal, but they were also charging 30p to use the toilet. I was so disgusted with the cafe that I wont go back and we returned to Lincoln the week after and had a much better time.

Corfu. It was beautiful in some places but was run down where we stayed and it rained incessantly which made our room cold n damp and there was only luke warm water on the rainy days. One day we had no water all day. Everywhere had the plastic sheet walls down to protect from the elements and everyone seemed to smoke so I permenantly smelled like an ash tray

@Pottedpalm

England rugby match at Twickenham; great for the atmosphere and food etc in hospitality was fab. But seats were too close to the pitch and I couldn’t figure out the match at all. Much better on TV!

I agree. It’s actually much better to watch it on the screens as you get a better angle. The middle tier is great for the overview but then their too small to see with my baddy eyes.
We stay in hotel onsite. That’s fun ( where the players stay!).

Living in London. I was bored and lonely the year I was there.

Having a boyfriend. Some bits were fab but most of the time you spend waiting for it to move to the next level or for it to end .

@malificent7

When I was 12 I was absolutely desperate to be famous...now at 43 i am introverted and cannot think of anything worse...i would quite happily sink into obscurity.
I'd love to be rich though

Was it Alan Alda who said "it is not necessary to be rich and famous. It is merely necessary to be rich".

Oh, Machu Picchu. The trek in was lovely, really enjoyed that. Came through the sun gate to get first view of the destination and was just meh. The church in the village I grew up in is older and as impressive.

For those who aren't impressed with Rick steins - try prawn on the lawn. For half the price for a familybof four you can eat twice the amount of fresh interestingly cooked fish in an amazing unstuffy environment.

@Kiki275 - totally with you on Rick Stein. I went to the Padstow one. When I asked the waitress what she’d recommend she said she didn’t like fish! Very expensive and my Dover sole was overcooked.

Winning huge amounts on the lottery.

I've concluded that I'd have to either keep it very secret in which case I'd have to forgo the flash house, car, holidays or accept that my relationships with everyone in my life will change.

Los Angeles. It was just like what you see on TV. I'd already seen everything.

The only surprising thing was how cold it was. Even when the sun was shining there was a fierce wind so we got badly sunburnt whilst also freezing cold.

England football against Germany.

Dreamed of going to wembley since I was a little girl, waited for football to return there after the refurb. Got tickets and then the worlds most boring match, and it was so cold.

Christmas Day with the kids. I love Christmas Eve but the actual day is all too tiring to be enjoyed!
Saturdays for similar reasons to Christmas Day.

I’m surprised to see the opinions on Paris, Disney and especially Sorrento!

The plant centre at RHS Wisley. I was expecting a plethora of unusual and rare varieties of plants (aka the millions of which we'd just seen all around us in the gardens) but nope.

Bog-standard garden centre fare, just slightly more expensive. Very disappointing.

As a child I thought it would be great to live by the seaside, despite Mum having lived by the sea in her youth and telling us it wasn't that great. It's nice but not wonderful.
There are fewer jobs with lower wages, very crowded in summer, property is much more expensive, community charge much higher, public transport is poor so you're a bit out on a limb if you don't drive, fewer theatres, cinemas etc.
