To ask what you dreamed would be fabulous but is actually maybe a bit shit

I think this about lots of things to do with celebrity lives, when I was younger I thought it all would amazing now not so sure.

A particular one I have is that I always longed for a villa on the Italian lakes. We went to a hotel there one year for 5 days ( in the same village as George Clooney ) It pissed down for 3 days. Everything was dark and damp and that combined with the endless queuing for flights and the thought of maintaining a property in another country sort of did for the dream. Not achievable without a lottery win anyway but now I don't even want it.

Anyone else got stuff like this or that they actually got and then thought 'meh'. I seem to have it about more and more things as I get on - I just don't want stuff anymore. Is it just to do with age?

Definitely. Especially every spider web known to man from huge mansions to the tower blocks stretching across the furniture.
Plus constantly saving butterflies and bees from their untimely demise.

Jetstream · 11/04/2021 01:13

Thus was in agreement with the post about conservatories.

Doona · 11/04/2021 01:15

I liked it better when I thought it was about men, sorry. So strange and obscure. I read it several times.

I once spent an extremely boring afternoon on a millionaire's yacht in the Caribbean.

@MsTSwift

We went to Venice last summer when it was quite empty. Magical and unforgettable. We can never go again now having seen it half empty with no cruise liners
Had the same experience in Florence last summer.

Wedding day - honeymoon and marriage all good - but a shit ton of money for a stressy day with arguments over seating plans, people trying to take endless pictures of you and unrealistic expectations of 'perfection' and being a beautiful bride. I much preferred just going and getting wrecked on friends wedding days.

VaVaGloom · 11/04/2021 01:30

Nightclubs are far from glamorous and alluring at the end of the night when they put the lights up!

Mothership4two · 11/04/2021 01:33

It had been a long held dream of mine to live in Cornwall until we spent a family holiday over Christmas and New Year there. It was bleak and very quiet. Still love Cornwall, but visit in warmer months.

Similarly, dh and I daydreamed about retiring to the Isles of Scilly until we took the kids there in the Autumn half term. Now understand why many of the residents spend Winter in Barbados

Alice Springs - like Swanley but hot.

GaryUnicorn · 11/04/2021 02:14

New York. What a dark oppressive place. Much nicer cities on the planet. Kuala Lumpur has much more character.

Embracingthechaos · 11/04/2021 02:48

I quite like Alice Springs, but I find it fascinating rather than an enjoyable place to visit, if that makes sense.

I learned a lot when I was there and I'm glad that I had the experience, but I'm not desperate to go back.

I recently found out that I will be spending a few months there next year, for work reasons. I'm probably going to run out of stuff to do after my first week. I suppose I'd better get some decent hiking boots and get really into desert trekking and red dirt..

A doll called Baby Alive. It ate and pooped. Except it only came with one packet of the food/poop and 2 nappies, so that ended that function on Boxing Day.

Binkybix · 11/04/2021 03:45

My DH used to live in LA, everyone used to say how awful it was but he really enjoyed it and I liked it when I visited. I think it helped knowing locals. Definitely had its downsides, and in general the homeless problem in all (the few) American cities I’ve been to has been terrible. Traffic sucked too.

Liked Paris and Athens (again stayed with locals which helped).

Agree though, really underwhelmed by Dublin both times I’ve been.

Dating really good looking guys with six packs and eventually marrying one... Total shite , will not recommend

The Maldives. Very limited on food

I imagine plenty of seafood and salad dishes with tropical fruit

The Maldives is fab.

But its very, very remote and there is pretty much no agriculture, so almost everything, apart from fish, has to be flown for shipped in.
There is a better selection of food in the hotel resorts but on the local islands its a lot more limited for sure.

CroutonsAvatar · 11/04/2021 04:18

New York. Everyone was so rude. Walking down the street was stressful. People literally just shoving you out of their way. I didn’t like anything about it.

CroutonsAvatar · 11/04/2021 04:29

And the Phantom of the Opera. I desperate to see it but it was so incredibly boring. We nearly left during interval.

Also, straight up Martinis cocktails. Look so chic and iconic. So strong they’re impossible to enjoy.

nancywhitehead · 11/04/2021 05:42

@KurtWilde

Marriage. Also agree with Mr Frosty. Always wanted one as a kid, never got one so when I had kids I thought right, at last!! Bought them one and it was utterly shite 😂
Haha, it's so funny people are mentioning Mr Frosty, that is what I thought of too! I did get one and it was my first experience of this tragic disappointment after a huge build up Sad

Living near the beach.

Tourists. Parking. Buses too busy to get on and you have someone’s sweaty armpit in your face. People playing loud music or bongo drums. Having to lug the laden pram and hot toddler down and then back up the hill. Having to watch the toddler like a hawk because it doesn’t notice waves and runners. Having toddler eschew the beach after 10 minutes to go and look at the bin lorry.

bert3400 · 11/04/2021 06:24

Lake Tahoe,CA...thought it would be so exciting to go skiing there. The instructor had the hots for someone in our group and was showing off to her all day, ignoring everyone in the group Everything closes at 8pm as everyone goes to bed super early. Most people have dinner at 5.30 . Souless, no atmosphere and certainly no nightlife. Give me a European ski resort anyday

Piglet89 · 11/04/2021 06:39

English people are less likely to like NY because the people are abrasive and honest when they’re displeased, rather than saying stuff like “I was surprised and disappointed that..” when actually you’re fucking raging.

Notjustanymum · 11/04/2021 06:44

Agree with Hamilton, The Slap and Paris; disagree with Camping - but we mostly camp abroad...

MsTSwift · 11/04/2021 06:53

Genuinely baffled at the Paris hate. It’s absolutely beautiful! We have teen girls and long weekends there as a family are our favourite thing done this 3 times now.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 11/04/2021 07:01

Lisbon. Saw hundreds of Instagrammers photos making the place look fantastic, in reality I though it was shit. Dirty rubbish filled streets, drug dealers openly hassling you on every street corner. Just did not get the hype.
