My kids' dad fed them badger

I'm not joking. We are separated and he sees them for the day once every few weeks. Last week he took them for the day in London and when I picked them up they told me, very casually, that Daddy had given them badger with rice for lunch. He had sent me a picture a few days earlier of a dead badger so it is totally plausible, and given that he has been homeless for the last couple of years and often 'lives off the land' I am certain he would not think twice about eating a badger. He told the kids that he steamed the meat for 4hrs but now i'm really worried about the whole TB thing. They seem fine but not sure if I should get them checked out. Any words of wisdom?

Are you my daughter in law it sounds like the sort of stunt my son would pull. If so l expect he was pulling their leg. Badger is carnivorous and would not taste good. I bet it was beef or lamb.

onefootinthegrave · 17/11/2018 20:08

At first I thought OP was messing around but now I think this thread is not as black and white as it first seemed.

avocadoincident · 17/11/2018 20:28

@BlackBeltInChildWrangling my mum used to make our local badgers bread and butter pudding in hard winters to help them get through it.

searose · 17/11/2018 20:39

Mind you he does not live in the woods in Hertfordshire but would like to think he could. Perhaps there are lots out there who would find this more romantic than the reality of life without a permanent roof over their heads.

my DD once came home from a weekend at her dad’s house and related that he had found a dead deer by the side of the road, brought it home and butchered it in the bath.

Did he steam it?

how gauche. sous-vide, thank you.

pamhill64 · 17/11/2018 21:37

Well we haven’t always had meat neatly packaged from the supermarket so I say good for him! But to actually answer your question I’ve found this
“DEFRA states that The Sunday Times’ claim that people are at risk of contracting bovine TB through eating meat is “irresponsible scaremongering”. It says that the Food Standards Agency has confirmed that there are no known cases of people contracting TB from eating meat.”
Hope that puts your mat rest.

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst ugh, don’t remind me! I can’t look at HFW now as that story is seared on my brain.

Darkautumn · 17/11/2018 22:49

Another nomination for classics

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/11/2018 22:54

This popped up on my Facebook ... maybe this is where he will face punishment for his crime against badgers ....

In case anyone is living in the woods (or not), whether they have a fully charged mobile or not, the best way to skin a badger is to take it to the filling station, make a nick in it's skin and fill it up with air from the compressor. This makes the skin really easy to strip off.

Don't ask me how I know this please Grin

It has to be dead first. Just saying.

Max14165 · 18/11/2018 07:11

I’ve come to This post late in the game .. but I am seriously chuckling here .. it’s 7 am on a Sunday and I’ve not laughed as much in a v long time ! Thanks OP for the pleasure of being able to participate in your little family’s new gastronomic venture and thanks to mumsnet for providing the hilarious dialogue ... I’ll go back to lurking now !!!

groundcontroltomontydon · 18/11/2018 07:29

Is it like eating Swan?
It's better because with badger everyone gets a leg

WickedWitchOfTheWest83 · 18/11/2018 08:00

Unlike the “snapped and farted” thread where I cried with laughter, this thread has made me feel physically sick 🤮

True or not, it sounds rank...

AdaColeman · 18/11/2018 09:04

TheSquashyHat That skinning method works well for goat too!

waxy1 · 18/11/2018 09:48

There’s more than one way to skin a goat, so they say.

TSSDNCOP · 18/11/2018 09:58

IHopeThisIsAGoodIdea · 18/11/2018 09:59

C0untDucku1a · 18/11/2018 10:12

Reading the last few replies has made me lose the game Sad

I don’t even know how my mind connected the game to this Angry

PasteSandwiches · 18/11/2018 10:25

Aaaaarrrrrrrhhhhh now I've lost the game!!!!!!!!!

cabsav · 18/11/2018 10:48

My daughters come home from their dad's having eaten nothing but pizza and Haribo . At least badger would be protein !

Ignoramusgiganticus · 18/11/2018 11:49

Bloody competitive parenting. The kids aren't going to be happy with plain old chicken now are they.

Patroclus · 18/11/2018 12:35

They eat badgers in Russia. Tastes like how you imagine swan shit would taste apparently.

VisitorsEntrance · 18/11/2018 13:35

Why would you say that? Now I’ve lost the game.

cricketmum84 · 18/11/2018 13:53
