My kids' dad fed them badger

I'm not joking. We are separated and he sees them for the day once every few weeks. Last week he took them for the day in London and when I picked them up they told me, very casually, that Daddy had given them badger with rice for lunch. He had sent me a picture a few days earlier of a dead badger so it is totally plausible, and given that he has been homeless for the last couple of years and often 'lives off the land' I am certain he would not think twice about eating a badger. He told the kids that he steamed the meat for 4hrs but now i'm really worried about the whole TB thing. They seem fine but not sure if I should get them checked out. Any words of wisdom?

And what would be so bad about sending kids for contact in the woods, assuming no other issues? Don't kids go camping?

Buteo · 16/11/2018 13:55

The Victorians used to make tie clips from badger penis bones.

Maybe OP's ex could get busy on Etsy?

Literally a sentence I never thought I'd see in my life.

There's a (lovely looking!) nursery in Highgate Woods in London where the kids stay out in the woods all day, every day, except in extreme weathers. It looks amazing, and often gets write ups in the media.

But I guess that's OK as people are paying for the privilege?

But - not OK to send kids to their own dad in the woods? Confused

longestlurkerever · 16/11/2018 14:03

Ha my DD goes to that very nursery! It is indeed pricey

halfwitpicker · 16/11/2018 14:04

Wtaf at that badger pic

longestlurkerever · 16/11/2018 14:04

Am on my way to pick her up.

HairyToity · 16/11/2018 14:09

I'd have thought if properly cooked it'd be fine.

We have at least two 'alternative lifestyle' grouos living in woods nearby, possibly 3. They are all incredibly well organised, one has been there for 15+ years, one has been building up slowly for about 10 years, and (I think) there's another which has been there maybe 5 years - though they may be the same group as the first, not sure.

I have a friend who comes from a big city every few months to spend the weekend with the second group which is why i know it's there, otherwise I wouldn't. Everyone round here knows about the first group, and the third one, assuming it's not just an extension of the first, are very high profile in town, doing building work and carpentry etc. They are extremely good, really really skilled.

None of these groups would have any trouble at all steaming a badger, putting it in and keeping it warm & ready to eat. Two communities do have open kitchens so you could pop along and have a meal for a donation or some work.

I don't have a problem believing any of this. I do wonder where the woods are that are close enough to the Natural History Museum for op's ex to be able to travel there while the meal stays warm, but hey, he could be a one-man tent dweller in somewhere like Oxshot woods or Epping Forest.

InvisibleLlama · 16/11/2018 14:17

Badgers have Penis bones???

ScabbyHorse · 16/11/2018 14:19

My dads neighbour eats road kill. She also gardens using astrology, and is a witch.

JustDanceAddict · 16/11/2018 14:22

‘hi, is that the NHM? Are you wanting your stuffed badger back?’
So badger in Tupperware in a museum - beats egg n cress any day...

OP said Herts (train into Kings Cross, then Victoria line is fast across London and you're nearly there. Not a very long journey).

If he's got an insulated Bento box, or flask big enough for a meal, could keep it warm for quite a time.

What's so odd about the idea that homeless people can cook

Don't take it so personally and who said they couldn't cook. My point was I was unaware they could steam meat for several hours.

But apparently camping and having your own steaming facilities is not unusual. Every day is a school day.

longestlurkerever · 16/11/2018 14:27

Presumably you'd have a campfire going anyway at this time of year? So would cook on that?

Missingstreetlife · 16/11/2018 14:28

My friends dad was a butcher, they were always getting road kill and poached game.

Bluntness100 · 16/11/2018 14:30

How do you steam meat for four hours plus on a camp stove? Anyone know?

SneakyGremlins · 16/11/2018 14:30

Have it tied above boiling water?

Bluntness100 · 16/11/2018 14:32

Just tying it up woildnt work, I guess it needs to be in a proper steamer thing, 🤔

JudasPrudy · 16/11/2018 14:33

I fully expect to see Martin Lewis talking about steaming your own badger on the One Show next week after this.

longestlurkerever · 16/11/2018 14:34

One of those bamboo steamer baskets?

WorldofTofuness · 16/11/2018 14:36

One of those bamboo steamer baskets?

You'd need so much bamboo for a badger, WWF would be launching a campaign about endangering pandas' food source. Grin

Bluntness100 · 16/11/2018 14:37

Yes, I guess it has to be a steamer basket of some sort. And he keeps the water topped up for several hours in the pot. 🤔

longestlurkerever · 16/11/2018 14:37

He might have cut it into chunks?

longestlurkerever · 16/11/2018 14:38

Water is hardly in short supply atm
