My kids' dad fed them badger

I'm not joking. We are separated and he sees them for the day once every few weeks. Last week he took them for the day in London and when I picked them up they told me, very casually, that Daddy had given them badger with rice for lunch. He had sent me a picture a few days earlier of a dead badger so it is totally plausible, and given that he has been homeless for the last couple of years and often 'lives off the land' I am certain he would not think twice about eating a badger. He told the kids that he steamed the meat for 4hrs but now i'm really worried about the whole TB thing. They seem fine but not sure if I should get them checked out. Any words of wisdom?

By the look of it the risks are minimal. I hope your dcs are ok. Kind of in awe when my dd (10) wouldn’t touch fish let alone anything mor unusual.

kenandbarbie · 16/11/2018 09:59

I love this thread!

Theimpossiblegirl · 16/11/2018 10:01

Was it just meat and rice? I'd find that very dry and want some gravy or ketchup.

recklessruby · 16/11/2018 10:01

Oh yuk yuk if roadkill. Been sat in a traffic jam near Hertford where a dead badger was at the side of the road. The smell was revolting!!!
Hope he was joking

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 16/11/2018 10:04

How many meals can you make out of a badger? More than the four from a MN Chicken I'd say. Maybe you'd get ten meals from a MN Badger!
Badger tacos and badger chilli for a start!

You start with steamed badger (with rice). Next is badger biryani with the leftover rice before you get to your badger chilli and badger tacos. Oh, and curried badger.
There will be enough left for badger with salad, badger pie, badger sandwiches and boil the bones for badger stock. Use part of the stock for soup with the last scraps. With the rest of the stock, you just need a fresh squirrel and half a fox. That should see you through week 2.

This has made me laugh, so Thankyou.

Lizzie48 · 16/11/2018 10:09

I hope your DC are okay, OP, it sounds as if the risks are minimal, though.

I'm also in awe of your DC actually eating it, as my DDs are just soooo fussy, especially DD1.

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 16/11/2018 10:09

Was it this badger? Would he usually have served it with mashed potato?

Hopefully he found some wild greens to go in the stew. The garlic mustard is having a second season hereabouts, that might go well? (I've never tried eating it, apparently you can make a sort of pesto with it)

Bulk it out with lentils.........Grin

I am so seriously not joking. The kids are 7 and 9 and said they really liked it. I wouldn't be concerned except that badgers often carry TB. Their dad has set up a 'camp' with cooking facilities etc. in the woods somewhere.*

How does he charge his phone to send you pictures of dead badgers?

Dahlietta · 16/11/2018 10:11

Near Hertford, you say? Perhaps this is the badger in question!

ConfusedDotty · 16/11/2018 10:16

Sett Menu. Hilarious. Grin

DontCallMeCharlotte · 16/11/2018 10:16

Stoatally ridiculous thread.

But I am enjoying it hugely.

Lamona · 16/11/2018 10:17

I think we share an ex.. obsessed with badgers. Live in a wood.
Entirely believable. I think if this is a joke post its too close to reality. But the responses are gold!
Wouldn't worry about TB. Would maybe worry about food poisoning.
Impressed with your kids openess, though I guess this isn't the first time they've eaten something unusal with their dad.

PerverseConverse · 16/11/2018 10:18

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

bellinisurge · 16/11/2018 10:18

Prepper here. I wouldn't eat badger if you put a gun to my head. Ok ... maybe then I would
Perhaps this mythical person should not be allowed to go near children. Unless he is actually Santa 🎅🏽....

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 16/11/2018 10:20

Better steaming in the Natural History Museum than screaming in the Sistine Chapel.

This would make a fab John Lewis ad.

ffffffffsake · 16/11/2018 10:25

I know nothing about badgers or TB but the attitude here towards homeless people is revolting. Have you people honestly never noticed a tent in the woods and realised that someone might live there? Do you have any idea how hard it is for a single man to get social housing? Do you know anything about the vile conditions of hostels and the violence that goes on in and around them? Sounds like OP has a good handle on contact, in safe places, but her ex's lifestyle is a tragedy of our times not a laughing matter.

BlooperReel · 16/11/2018 10:25

Maybe this could become a new Christmas tradition for your family? Stuffed badger on Christmas day will be next

BlooperReel stuffed badger would, I assume, be something Bimwit could help with.

Lovemusic33 · 16/11/2018 10:34

I like the idea of badger for Christmas dinner, Turkey is horrid anyway, badger is probably more edible. I’m thinking Badger wellington might be nice? We had venison last Christmas and I can’t see how Badger is any different (both wild animals).
