My kids' dad fed them badger

I'm not joking. We are separated and he sees them for the day once every few weeks. Last week he took them for the day in London and when I picked them up they told me, very casually, that Daddy had given them badger with rice for lunch. He had sent me a picture a few days earlier of a dead badger so it is totally plausible, and given that he has been homeless for the last couple of years and often 'lives off the land' I am certain he would not think twice about eating a badger. He told the kids that he steamed the meat for 4hrs but now i'm really worried about the whole TB thing. They seem fine but not sure if I should get them checked out. Any words of wisdom?

I once met a child who assured me she'd had hedgehog for tea the night before. I was almost convinced until her mum reminded her she'd had turkey dinosaurs and chips....

We don’t eat no stinking badgers!

Harebellmeadow · 16/11/2018 07:05

Maybe OP could post the picture of the raw material for the Sett menu - the badger in question. 😁

waxy1 · 16/11/2018 07:11

I’d be bristling!

Smidge001 · 16/11/2018 07:17

Are you sure he said he steamed it, rather than poached it OP?

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 16/11/2018 07:18

Ex New Age Traveller here.
I'm also finding this plausible and not even especially unusual tbh.
I'm imagining OPs ex in a bender or caravan in the woods, eating roadkill.
If he has a wood burner for heating it would be very simple to steam something for several hours as the heat source is already on, anyway.
Pps have mentioned badger meat needs to be cooked a long time so, on the face of it, it sounds like OPs ex has followed the recommended method. I don't think it's possible to contract TV from meat anyway.
He can charge his phone from a car battery or leisure battery.
I think it sounds like a lovely day out tbh.
OP: If you ex is generally a safe person, I would consider allowing the children to visit him in the woods and see how he normally lives. It could be a really interesting experience for them.

Badges are vicious fuckers. Lucky it didn't break his arm.

Unless I'm getting confused with swans.

ValidUser · 16/11/2018 07:19

I personally prefer my badger with quinoa.

SoupDragon · 16/11/2018 07:20

Weasily the oddest lunch ever.

treaclesoda · 16/11/2018 07:23

I can't even get my kids to eat fish, I'm very impressed that they casually scoffed down badger and rice for lunch.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 16/11/2018 07:24

I wouldn't have any qualms over sending my offspring off with this man. I'm not sure what badgers are like inside the M25 but down here in rural Somerset, they aren't what you want to meet on a dark night. Any man who can dispatch a badger with his bare hands (because that's totally how I'm picturing it having happened) can look after my children.

Surfskatefamily · 16/11/2018 07:25

Do you trust him to adequately cook wild animals to ensure its safe? If so then no problem. I think its great to eat that way rather than farmed meat. Its a bit strange sending kids to a camp in the woods though. I would insist on going to take a look at the place

3WildOnes · 16/11/2018 07:25

Lots of people live in the woods in benders and tree houses. There was a community living in the woods in runnymead. There are wind up phone chargers, solar powered phone chargers but homeless people often use portable chargers that they charge up when they visit a cafe or anywhere else with a power point.

brizzledrizzle · 16/11/2018 07:26

Was it badger?

Bimwit · 16/11/2018 07:26

Not RTFT but i want to reassure OP - cooking easily kills TB so no risk there.

Badger is a traditional food, badger ham was a thing. I'm a taxidermist and they are REALLY meaty! I do eat roadkill but badgers seem to putrify quickly so never had one i was confident to eat.

Ur exDH is a man after my own heart and seems really resourceful! Quite Envy that he got the kids to eat it because DD wont even touch legit venison!

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 16/11/2018 07:31

Oh God - Sett Menu has finished me

HariboLecter · 16/11/2018 07:40

sett menu
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 16/11/2018 07:43

Was it a free-range organic badger?

OzzyMadBat · 16/11/2018 07:44

I wondered what happened to Jerome Flynn

Lovemusic33 · 16/11/2018 07:44

I’m more impressed by the fact your kids ate it, I can’t even get mine to eat a stew let alone steamed badger.

If they are still alive and healthy I would presume it’s safe. Maybe ask him next time to feed them something a bit better, maybe squirrel or rabbit, badger isn’t that nice which is why most animals won’t even eat it (other than crows, they eat anything).

Carpetglasssofa · 16/11/2018 07:46

Locally-raised, organic meat. Really don't understand the problem.

OzzyMadBat · 16/11/2018 07:49

one of my favourite episodes ever Grin The roadkill starts at 32.30

OzzyMadBat · 16/11/2018 07:52

did you marry Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and were vole-au-vents part of the buffet? Wink

RainbowsArePretty · 16/11/2018 07:52

I remember that Come Dine with Me. I would not have eaten that!

PictureFrame24 · 16/11/2018 07:52

*we are not really on speaking terms (texts only)

He had sent me a picture a few days earlier of a dead badger*

This sounds like a worrying relationship

Crying. 😂😂😂😂 Excellent thread. Bravo.
