I've always loved The Amazing Mr Blunden but am amazed so few people have heard of it.
Anyone else have old yet glorious and obscure movies they love?

The film Yanks about an American camp in Lancashire during WW2 is a good film. There's a scene where a couple of lads earn a few pennies by going to the chippy for the yanks. When they get to the front of the queue they ask for fish and chips 32 times and everyone behind them groans and complains.

Saw Out of the Past on iplayer the other week. Great stuff - Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/10/2017 08:15

I saw Yanks recently and loved it, cried like a baby at the end.

regisitme · 14/10/2017 08:18

The Ladykillers.

dotdotdotmustdash · 14/10/2017 08:19

Ladyhawke with Rutger Hauer. A beautiful film full of atmosphere.

Pithivier · 14/10/2017 08:19

Jezebel with Bette David is my all time favourite film. The scene where she wears the red dress to a ball when all the Southern Belles are I. White, is a masterpiece. Henry Fonda is just so delicious.

Also Waterloo Bridge, Now Voyager and The Anniversary.

Pithivier · 14/10/2017 08:20

Better Davis obviously not David. She would be so cutting about that.

I have a memory of a Christmas film called Quincy's Quest that was about some toys that didn't sell at Christmas so they were to be incinerated unless they could make it to Father Christmas who lived at the top of the toy shop

Nobody else seems to remember it. I recall that the toys didn't actually make it, I cried so much. This must've been late 70's and it was black and white I think. Anyone remember it?

Wingbing · 14/10/2017 08:28

Just googled Quincy's quest and it's on YouTube! And in colour, some memory I have!

Scabbersley · 14/10/2017 08:28

Cat people (the original)
That Spanish film where the man gets stuck in a telephone box

Scabbersley · 14/10/2017 08:28

The Magic Tollbooth

Middleoftheroad · 14/10/2017 08:30

Whistle and I'll Come to You has been recommended as a spooky film. It sounds like 'It Follows' borrowed much from that film. anyone seen it?

I always liked The Ghost and Mrs Muir (think tgats what it was called)

Not that 'old' well 30 years or so but these films that were on in the 80s
Those Glory Glory Days
P'tang Yang Kipperbang
Little Darlings
Breaking Away (mentioned upthread and on other night)

Middleoftheroad · 14/10/2017 08:32

@wingbing - sounds harsh for a kids film, but then again I'm from the 'When the Wind Blows' generation (let's all watch a family friendly cartoon about the nuclear winter).

Wingbing · 14/10/2017 08:46

It was very harsh, I cried and cried for sometime afterwards

squashyhat · 14/10/2017 08:51

Bottle Rocket. Early Wes Anderson film with Owen and Luke Wilson.

NoMoreStickers · 14/10/2017 09:20

Dark Victory with Bette Davis 😍

rhubarblover · 14/10/2017 09:38

Saythatagain I think the film about disfigured couple is called The Enchanted Cottage.
Chinkchink another vote for Random Harvest - a real tearjerker and just wonderful.

Zaphodsotherhead · 14/10/2017 09:43

I actually came on here to say 'The Amazing Mr Blunden'! Such a great Christmassy film - I love it too, OP!

CamberGirl · 14/10/2017 09:47

Squadron 633.
Absolutely love it.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/10/2017 09:48

Mrs Caldicotts Cabbage War (with Pauline Collins and John Alderton) is another film I love. It's a proper Sunday afternoon ironing film.

ConstantlyCooking · 14/10/2017 10:12

I love The Dead of Night and The Amazing Mr Blunden. I had recorded them but obviously can't play videos now. I also have a soft spot for Clue.

ConstantlyCooking · 14/10/2017 10:14

And Stalag 17 is my favourite pow film.

Howyoualldoworkme · 14/10/2017 10:19

Conspiracy of Hearts
Woman in a Dressing Gown
The Ghost and Mrs Muir
Spring and Port Wine
The Family Way
Endless Night..

I've got totally addicted to the Talking Pictures tv channel. Brilliant stuff including a rerun of Family at War Smile

LouiseBrooks · 14/10/2017 10:26

This one probably really is obscure.

Verona Lake and Frederic Match in I Married A Witch (said to have given the inspiration for Bewitched).

She was so beautiful.
