I've always loved The Amazing Mr Blunden but am amazed so few people have heard of it.
Anyone else have old yet glorious and obscure movies they love?

The Mouse That Roared

Heavens Above

The Battle Of The Sexes, about a brash American businesswoman who attempts to modernise a very old tweed business in Edinburgh, which looks magnificent in black & white. Very funny with lots of droll lines, and great Scottish actors in it.

I'm Alright Jack
Four films starring Peter Sellers, not a nice man irl, however he was a great actor

Has anyone mentioned 'Comfort and Joy' with Bill Paterson and Clare Grogan? It's a 1984 comedy loosely based on the Glasgow ice-cream 'wars' of the 80s. A really funny, warm and slightly edgy film. Well worth watching.

Bill Paterson has the most soothing voice I could ever wish to hear. He should be employed to deliver bad news, he's the voice-blanket we all need at difficult life moments. For that reason alone, I loved Comfort and Joy. And Truly, Madly, Deeply. And those British Rail adverts. Bill Paterson

Ooh I've just remembered 'Time Bandits' fantasy film with one of my favourite lead out songs ever George Harrison - Dream Away! It's fabulous fun and the kids love it 😊

BagelGoesWalking · 20/10/2017 10:01

Donkey Glad you mentioned that film! I always remember seeing it on tv but didn’t know the name. Yy to Bill Paterson’s lovely voice.

"Barbarians at the Gate" ? - a true story of the Nabisco takeover, with James Garner

Oh, great ! So we invented a cigarette that smells like shit and tastes like a fart".

CoolCarrie · 20/10/2017 17:17

The Sweet Smell Of Sucess, with Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis, directed by Sandy McKendrick, the same man who made The Maggie & Whisky Galore

Halsall · 21/10/2017 10:36

CoolCarrie YY, there's that great scene where he produces a cigarette and says 'match me, Sidney!'

Burt Lancaster was such an interesting actor; he was in a lot of fairly forgettable dross but then popped up in much more interesting films like that. He's great in 'Atlantic City' too, when he was much older. And he was in Visconti's 'The Leopard'.

I've just watched The Awful Truth thanks to this thread. Thanks to whoever recommended it!

Ilovetea33 · 22/10/2017 23:05

That was me. Glad you enjoyed it!

greedycushionhoarder · 31/10/2017 22:08

Bit late to the thread and not as old as some mentioned but a family favourite here is The five pennies with Danny Kaye and Louis Armstrong.

CoolCarrie · 01/11/2017 11:22

Burt Lancaster was in an odd film called The Swimmer, about a man who swims though his neighbours pools to get somewhere...

SawnUpLooRoll · 15/08/2018 13:35

I have to recommend 'Westward the Women'. It's black and white, and about a bloke who owns a ranch that will fizzle out if the men don't start families and a legacy, so he gets a loads of single women to sign up to become wives and agree to travel to the ranch. The whole film is about their journey across the wild west to the ranch. I laughed and cried and Hope Emerson as the battleaxe who keeps using shipping metaphors is air kiss

BlueLemon · 15/08/2018 15:47

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but Dancin thru the Dark
Based on the play by Willie Russell.
Fantastic film never gets shown now

BagelGoesWalking · 16/08/2018 01:20

Burt Lancaster was also in Local Hero, another lovely film.

Mr Wonderful

(Ok not obscure, but definitely an under-appreciated rom-com).

Born Yesterday (1950) Judy Holliday. Love her accent when she shouts whaaat?
