Little things that put you off going out with someone

I was thinking today about the little things over the course of my dating years men have done/said that instantly made me think "nope, not you". They were probably perfectly nice people in retrospect...

  1. Looked mildly nonplused about a woman in a picture having underarm hair.

  2. Liked Miranda.

  3. Used the phrase "wedding tackle".

There are probably countless more. Tell me yours...

  1. Spent more than two minutes "grooming" to go out.

dungarees as a fashion statement OMG I snorted out loud at that one! Grin

MrsDilligaf · 20/04/2017 18:13

First date. We were having a conversation about families in general when he asked did I have children. "No" I said, "but I hoped at some point in the future I will" ...vague, non-commital and hoping I'd diverted that conversation until ooooh I don't know, a year into a serious relationship maybe??

"Well" says Mr bloody crackers first date "I wouldn't be adverse to having a baby with you"

There was no second date.

User2468 · 20/04/2017 18:17

Wore pants. Not boxers, nasty old man pants.

Wanted elocution lessons before meeting my parents.

Couldn't drive.

No ambition.

Didn't want to live in the countryside.

Domineering arse hole.

Or as I say to DH: "I've never met a less annoying human, that's why I married you."

ShowMePotatoSalad · 20/04/2017 18:21

Moon boots!

helpimitchy · 20/04/2017 18:23

Yes, moon boots. How tragic are they, even by 1992 standards?

floraeasy · 20/04/2017 18:26

Turned up for date with greasy hair and an old T-shirt.

Spoke about his first ex-wife and then his second ex-wife (I had to go to the loo as I was screeching with laughter inside. I get fits of giggles very easily).

^ different men!

What response were you hoping for op?

I went on one date with a guy (foaf) who would purr and meow in my ear despite me asking him never to do it again, he tried a few times. He knew I hated cats so I've no idea what the fuck he was thinking it would do for me. The last time he tried I barked like a dog and walked off. It was just fucking creepy.

I'm about to break up with someone I've been seeing for 5 months. Here are some of the smaller reasons why:

  • can't pronounce his th's
  • holds his knife like a pen (aghhh)
  • says 'how rude' in a very camp way
  • constantly rubs at my fingers when we are holding hands
  • has a shit phone, old style not smart phone which cuts out every time we speak and I have to call as he has no credit

Teabagtits Do you understand the meaning of 'nonplussed'?

Mermaidinthesea123 · 20/04/2017 18:37

Sooooo many things
Not being able to hold a knife and fork correctly
Bad table manners
Inability to express himself
Inability to have a conversation when people come to visit
Leaving the toilet seat up
Leaving piss anywhere except in the toilet
Failure to pull his weight around the house and garden
Spongers
Chauvinism of any kind
Non animal lovers
It goes on and on and is why I am single permanently

Lilyloo456 · 20/04/2017 18:39

*long fingernails 😷
*shiny patent loafers ( didn't see these till we got out the car ) 😧
*lived with parents aged 33
*had children who lived less than a mile away "but never has the chance to see them" 🙄
*on a first (and only) he walked about five feet ahead of me

Teabagtits · 20/04/2017 18:39

vlad yes but It depends where you come from as the meaning appears to have developed over time. In America it's generally meant as unperturbed or unsurprised and that usage is becoming more common in UK these days too. I was curious as to whether op was referring to Latin based use or a more modern American based use. Is that ok with you?

Comealongpond89 · 20/04/2017 18:39

Brilliant thread. Making me laugh. Ok here's my addition

Chewed with his mouth open bleurgh!

While dtd thrusted like he was hula hooping. Had to use all my self control not to laugh

Lilyloo456 · 20/04/2017 18:41

Oh thought of another one.. one guy kept a chamber pot under his bed 😷

HappenstanceMarmite · 20/04/2017 18:41

Had 6 packets pallets of 45xtoilet rolls stashed in his wardrobes

Mermaidinthesea123 · 20/04/2017 18:41

Oh God nettle no, I'd puke up, pull it out and walk off!!!

ArtemisiaGentilleschi · 20/04/2017 18:42

Took me to his boudoir and opened a little cupboard containing two neat piles...one of packets of tissues, the other of Scientology books.
Reader, I fled.

ArtemisiaGentilleschi · 20/04/2017 18:43

X post with Marmite...wonder if it was the same Mr luvva luvva?

Disappointednomore · 20/04/2017 18:45

Brown shoes
Big wet tongue like a horrible big snake

LaGattaNera · 20/04/2017 18:46

Poor oral or penile hygiene however I'm ok with the word "chuckle" and they must be an animal lover, even if they don't have pets themselves

Janey50 · 20/04/2017 18:49

How odd. I always thought 'nonplussed' meant surprised or confused. According to Google it can now mean 'unperturbed' or 'unsurprised'.

MrsMeeseeks · 20/04/2017 18:49

Had a notice on the back of the loo door saying "If you sprinkle when you tinkle, please be sweet and wipe the seat".

Had freakishly gigantic thumbnails.

Called me "m'dear" on the first date.

All different guys.

loonieleftie · 20/04/2017 18:52

Thumbnails could have been guitar player?

I can't fancy people with big dimple in the chin (like John Travilta) I know it's really not anyone's fault but I find it unattractive.

miniHovis · 20/04/2017 18:53

Ate with his mouth open and made the most disgusting sounds while he chewed

Oh and he wanted to strangle me when having sex, it didn't get to having sex
