Most of the time I have detol hand soap in my bathrooms but if I know someone is visiting my home I get out the posh L'Occitane matching soap and moisturiser stuff I recieved for Christmas a few years back. Surely people notice it's always the same amount of fullness each time they visit? Plus who has enough time to moisturise their hands every time they wash them with a toddler in the house. Jesus if Im more than 15 seconds having a wee he'll be banging the door down wanting to come in or he will have jammed quavers in the xbox. There's no time for the luxury of hand moistorusing. Plus it's a bugger keeping a grip on his squirmy hands St the best of times let alone adding lubrication into the mix.

When my guests leave, back it goes under the sink so as not to waste it.

I also like the fruit bowl to be bursting with beautiful fruit. We always have bananas and satsumas but for some reason a pineapple just makes my mundane life feel that little bit more exotic. "Ooh look at wiggles84 she must peel her pineapple fresh each morning for her delightful childs breakfast". No a quick bit of toast and a banana and we're off to start our days. No one's got time for that surely?

None of us even like pineapple Shock

I know, I know I shouldn't care what people think but what little things do you project to the world so as to not to appear the frazzled dog tired slutten you are?

Imyourwoman... Er, I know which books I own? Not sure I understand your question (or maybe I'm more visual than most?) but as I've read them all, I can generally recall if the book I'm looking for was bright purple or blue. Maybe I have a more visual memory. Which would explain a lot on this thread, really.

NoCapes · 10/10/2016 09:07

DoYouRemember can I come live with you please? Grin
And we're definitely going to need a picture of the stunt baking area, definitely!

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 10/10/2016 09:32

Abyssinian Yes that's what I meant, how do you find a book you need even when you know you have it? Admittedly I'm not super visual, and many of my books are pretty unexciting in terms of design or even title. Only yesterday I was looking for a book on science and pregnancy, and apart from knowing I had it I couldn't for life of me remember what it looked like or even what it's title was. Luckily having a baby book shelf made the job easy. (The book was Expecting Better, turned out)

To be honest the warmest and most welcoming house I've been a guest at had no posh candles or fancy soap. It was cosy, warm and inviting. Nice biscuits, plenty of hot drinks offered, the odd piece of home made cake. The linen cupboard for bathing had no fancy guest towels. But their was something so lovely about seeing a life time of collected linens. As long as the bedding is clean, the house isn't grotty and hosts and welcoming I have a lovely stay.

GinAndOnIt · 10/10/2016 09:41

Ah, I am so much more likely to be welcoming if I'm proud of how my house looks though.

pregnantat50 · 10/10/2016 09:44

Can I just add another perspective from the guests point of view. I have never been happier when arriving at a friends place to find utter chaos...lol, I like a lived in home, it makes me feel relaxed and not worry so much about what they will think of my place.

Seriously though, clean but cluttered and the odd item that isnt top of the range doesnt cause me alarm, it makes them normal :)

GinAndOnIt · 10/10/2016 10:00

But pregnant that's the point of all the staging - we're not hiding all our belongings away, we are making the home looked 'lived in' but in a nice way Grin

My house always has dishes next to the sink, dog hair, cat hair, mud/wheat/straw/maize off DP's clothes, washing on clothes airers and everything in between. But that doesn't mean I want to look at a ripped old sponge with half of last night's sausages on Wink

Gowgirl · 10/10/2016 10:19

Been shopping😁

Gowgirl · 10/10/2016 10:20

Are these even edible? And where should I stage put them?

pregnantat50 · 10/10/2016 10:26

I wish I could share the contents of my fridge with you....lol (its basically like the ones you get in Currys!...empty) Not a very good welcome for visitors...and I dont think I have filled the fruit bowl in ages ...actually I dont think I have a fruit bowl for that matter xx

Gowgirl · 10/10/2016 10:29

Luckily the dcs like fruit so its ann ever changing display,, don't normally bbuy pineapple though.....

pregnantat50 · 10/10/2016 10:33

I wonder if I could get away with plastic fruit, give them a polish now and then...no one would know

MaQueen · 10/10/2016 10:38

pregnant but you can be welcoming and faff about with fripperies, too.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. One of my friends loves coming to stay because I stage the guest room like a boutique hotel room.

pregnantat50 · 10/10/2016 10:41

I love that word: Had to look it up though as not heard of it before

Full Definition of frippery
plural fripperies
1
obsolete
a : cast-off clothes
b archaic : a place where old clothes are sold
2
a : finery; also : an elegant or showy garment
b : something showy, frivolous, or nonessential
c : ostentation; especially : something foolish or affectedly elegant
See frippery defined for English-language learners

MaQueen · 10/10/2016 10:45

I also like frills and furbelows too...

Gowgirl · 10/10/2016 10:52

I really don't get the derision from some people, why would the fact I like to decant my veg from their sainsburies basics bags and arrange them in a nice wicker basket that's where the baby squash are going be offensive, I grant its a little pretentious but it makes me happy!
Not so many years ago you could sum this thread up as homemaking, and yes I have polished the living room with the method polish, it smells lovely!!!

Yokohamajojo · 10/10/2016 11:08

Fancy cutlery only comes out for guests and a running joke is that any special guests get to drink coffee/tea out of our one and only 'designer' cup. My husband got it as a free bee and it has an orange handle hence designer

MaQueen · 10/10/2016 11:08

gowgirl "it makes me happy" ...and there, you have answered your own question.

My (also rampant stager) friend and I were discussing this very thing recently. And we concluded that, generally, if you actively enjoy spending your time fripperising then you're probably in quite a nice stage of your life? You have a bit of time on your hands. You got some spare cash to blow on trinkets. You're feeling quite upbeat and so want to do fun stuff...

Some might sneer and think it pointless and shallow. But I can think of far, far worse traits than wanting your home to look pretty and to spoil guests with nice things.

I don't have masses of time on my hands, I work and read a lot. But I rarely watch TV (except Poldark, and I am loving Nampara's rustically Georgian interiors) and prefer to spend my evenings titivating our home Smile

Natsku · 10/10/2016 11:15

I just realised we staged the lounge - took the telly out of it altogether and put it into the study/spare bedroom so now it looks like we're highbrow people who don't watch telly. In the place where it used to be is a collection of records and the record player.

Gowgirl · 10/10/2016 11:30

True, I'm at home for at least another 2 years, have time to hunt round charity shops etc...plus my titivating balances out dhs love of tech, we have his voice activated stuff and my flowers and fruit stand50p glass cake stand from car boot but at least it smells nice.....

pregnantat50 · 10/10/2016 11:49

Love it, thanks Cowgirl :)

Natsku · 10/10/2016 11:52

I worked in a charity shop for the last few months so I was always finding naice things for the house. I particularly love my two little metal statues of drunk tramps Grin

starchildareyoulistening · 10/10/2016 12:27

I love this, it is my highest aspiration in life to have a house with an immaculate sitting room for Best where the dogs aren't allowed to set foot inside (while they flop all over the sofas in the everyday lounge). I don't even like having guests but I covet beautiful homewares for my own personal satisfaction.
