What's great about newborns?

I'm due DC very soon, a very much wanted baby. But all I can think about is the pure exhaustion and anxiety that I had with my first! I know there were good things, my brain just seems to be filtering them out.

So, kind mumsnetters, tell me what is just brilliant about having a newborn and a toddler. No need to throw in a dose of reality, I'm full of those thoughts already!

I'd forgotten the creases and squishy knees and the little noises they make when feelings, little grunty, sighing noises...

Poppyred85 · 18/08/2016 19:35

Feeding, not feelings, damn autocorrect!

divafever99 · 18/08/2016 19:46

Fluffy ears, baggy skin on their legs because they haven't grown into them yet. Teeny tiny hands gripping your finger. dd 2 is 1 next week, this is making me want to do it all again!

Cineraria · 18/08/2016 19:47

The milk drunk thing is amazing and I didn't realise it would affect me just as much as it affects him. I struggled a bit with upright feeding until I learnt the laid back position, so most of my newborn feeds were side lying and DH would laugh and laugh whenever he came in the room to find us both lying cuddled up on the sofa looking dozily into the distance.

The face of a newborn finding itself in water for the first time can be pretty good too. We had a tummy tub bath and DS loved it from the first time we used it. It was our solution to tried everything and still can't stop him crying/make him go to sleep. He still loves swimming and paddling.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 18/08/2016 19:49

I absolutely love newborns 'milk drunk' face

CaramelPrincess · 18/08/2016 19:51

When they fall asleep nestled in your arms and you look at them & feel you could burst with love for them Smile

dementedma · 18/08/2016 20:03

Teeny feet grow....here are my and Ds feet. He's 14. I'm sure they were teeny weeny once.

Badgoushk · 18/08/2016 20:48

I had the exact same fear/reservations. When they're born the oxytocin kicks in and it's fine. The best bit is when you look into their eyes and you realise you mean the world to each other xxx

JeanGenie23 · 18/08/2016 20:51

Their little windy smiles when they sleep Smile

They don't move!

But seriously you can put a newborn down and have a wee without hearing 'mommy where are you, oh oh mommy my nappy oh Oh' Hmm two small words that fill you with dread!

MotherofPearl · 18/08/2016 21:07

Goodness me yes to all this! My DC3 is 3 months old and already it feels the newborn phase has passed, although she still has a delicious little downy head which reminds me of a tennis ball, in a good way. If I wasn't so ancient I'm sure I'd just go on and on having more! Grin

bluecashmere · 18/08/2016 21:08

This thread makes me feel so broody.

PickleBot · 18/08/2016 21:16

The little pudgy dimples on their knuckles.
The way they are completely full of outrage one moment and calm and placid the next.
When only you are good enough.
That moment when they latch on and it all just works.

LBOCS2 · 18/08/2016 21:20

Tiny baby stretches, where you pick them up to go to bed an they stretch themselves out before nestling into your shoulder and they're like a real person but just really really small.

Giving birth and having them on your chest and having a jolt of recognition - it's like, hi, I know you! You're so much more than I imagined but I know you.

Milky smiles when they're messing around feeding but want to see your face so they pop on and off and grin at you.

randomsabreuse · 18/08/2016 21:21

My DD has just turned 1. I miss the being where I put her and the lack of resistance to nappy changes - tiny hands and feet mean you can hold all 4 limbs at once while dealing with the poonami

CatchIt · 18/08/2016 21:28

They're not 4 year olds - yet! Grin

The smell, the frog cuddle on your chest, the beautiful sleep smiles. I could go on but I'd be here forever!

greathat · 18/08/2016 22:56

The softest of soft of a newborns hair

greathat · 18/08/2016 22:58

I need someone I know to have a baby!

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 18/08/2016 23:26

This thread is like torture. The hunger for a baby is so bad.

Gemimapuddleduck · 18/08/2016 23:28

Having my third boy at 40.....and with a 9yr age gap these reminders are good, all I can think about is sleepless nights n nappies.....😒 I do remember the teeny vests, nappies, babygros though n yes that newborn smell, lush 😉 xx

Valentine2 · 19/08/2016 01:50

Wow OP! Thanks for this lovely thread! You made me broody.
The best thing with DC1 was the smiles, the cuddles, the absolute awe of making a brand new human being all by myself (well, not technically but you know what I mean 😝)!
DC2 was even more cuddly, absolutely beautiful hands and immediately satarted feeding.
Together, they can bring the house down but who cares. I wish I could have more babies without the pregnancy bit. Blush

MUjunkie · 19/08/2016 02:12

Just them being here! So small and helpless and beautiful! The cuddles! The smell!

Toddlers not so much good haha! Kidding! The first smile, the first steps, first word! I LOVE their face when they start trying different foods! That's brilliant! Seeing them learn and do everything for the first time!

Mines 15 and believe me that's when there is REALLY nothing good to say! Confused

MUjunkie · 19/08/2016 02:14

I have nieces and nephews I steal on a regular basis though Grin

Rainbowrhythms · 19/08/2016 09:09

sukey

You can have mine. It doesn't sleep and shrieks like a banshee every time I'm not giving it my full and undivided attention.

Any other takers?

Watch a baby yawn and stretch at the same time - Smile

MrsJorahMormont · 19/08/2016 11:26

The froggy legs :o

I am not a fan of the newborn stage AT ALL but I loved the little froggy legs :o
