What's great about newborns?

I'm due DC very soon, a very much wanted baby. But all I can think about is the pure exhaustion and anxiety that I had with my first! I know there were good things, my brain just seems to be filtering them out.

So, kind mumsnetters, tell me what is just brilliant about having a newborn and a toddler. No need to throw in a dose of reality, I'm full of those thoughts already!

You are all making me so broody!

AButterflyLightsBesideUs · 17/08/2016 18:58

That gorgeous downy soft hair on their heads.

A little head that fits in the palm of your hand.

The hilarious and cute startle reflex.

Awe at the grown up sounding farts from something so small.

Really cute clothes.

Tiny fingers that can only just hold one of yours.

They don't talk at you incessantly or require you to engage in imaginative role play type games all day long.

Very cute tiny bottoms

Those deep bluey black swimming strangely wise and knowing eyes and they way they study you.

When they fuss and cry for other people and then settle instantly in your arms ha, auntie in law!

And yes.... not being pregnant anymore! And no longer having to panic about how birth is about to play out.

If you're lucky people send you flowers and bring cake.

Loving this thread! (30 weeks with DS2)

Absy · 17/08/2016 19:02

Cuddling in bed with them all day (I should have done this way more)

Oh yes the head! I rubbed my cheek against DS's head constantly as it was so soft

Getting to know this tiny new, little person

That everything is new and fascinating for them

They grow up!
(They're ok, but I like the 6 weeks plus part where I can 'read' them more easily).

Pinkheart5915 · 17/08/2016 19:10

Tiny hand and feet

The smell

Being able to cuddle them all day

The way they grip your fingers

How happy they look after having lots of milk

Extra cute clothes

Getting to know this tiny little person you made 💕 Aww

People bring you presents and cake

Pregancny is over

I've got 11 month ds and 2 week DD and they look very cute when together and ds is always careful when he touches her even without being told he has to be

ToastyFingers · 17/08/2016 19:17

Shelagh has just made me very broody. 7mo dd is not a squishy peepy kidney bean baby at all anymore and I miss it already.

Sparrowlegs248 · 17/08/2016 19:19

Lovely thread, pregnant with dc2.

The adult darts are hilarious.

They are so portable. Tiny even massive ds

You look at them and are constantly amazed that you grew this tiny perfect being.

avocadosweet · 17/08/2016 19:39

Shelagh I cried at that! I have a 4mo and a 3yo, they lie in DD1's bed together for a bedtime story and it is the most adorable thing to see them beside each other sucking their thumbs and holding hands. Aww.

allthecarbs · 17/08/2016 19:39

I shouldn't have opened this thread. I swore no more babies but this is making me remember how cute they are.

Sharesinpampers · 17/08/2016 19:45

Thank you all, feeling better already! Such lovely things you've shared.

I am looking forward to having DC cuddled on my stomach before they get too big Smile

Um. Everything (Except meconium).

They are so amazing and wonderful, you'll just stare at them in wonder and total awe.

YY to feeding noises. So delicious!

I think someone else mentioned it, but when they're upset and you hold them and they recognise you and calm down and you feel like the biggest hero in the world

The first smile (especially when it's directed at you)
The totally uncoordinated and random movements they make
The snoozy sleepy cuddles in the night- makes the half asleep feeds so worthwhile

The thing I like most about newborns though, is how no matter how you picture them when you are pregnant your imagination never stretches to even come close. That they are a person beyond anything you can comprehend. It is just so awesome every time you learn something new about their personality or see them in a new way. Never stops giving me pangs in my chest and my DD is a strapping great toddler already!

Nicknamegrief · 17/08/2016 20:05

I love the Carl Sandburg's words- 'a baby is God's opinion that the world should go on', that essentially nothing ever created/invented/made will come close to how the awesomeness of a newborn. I didn't really appreciate it with my first but the ones that followed I have treasured. You just wake up one day and they aren't a newborn any more.

All of the above and how their skin is so soft.

rainbowrhythms · 17/08/2016 20:08

Mine slept all the time and hardly ever cried. He was lovely to have around - we could take him anywhere.

He's 5 months now and much harder. 12 weeks onwards was when it got a lot more difficult for me!

Mol1628 · 17/08/2016 21:21

The fact that you are their whole world. All they want is you. Your warmth, your comfort, your milk, your voice.

Don't really like newborns but there are lovely bits. Much prefer 12-18 month age where they have personality but don't tantrum.

LoucheLady · 17/08/2016 21:42

Furry hobbity ears. The way their tongues quiver when they yawn.

Strawclutching · 17/08/2016 21:44

Seeing the toddler growing to love the newborn and (after a couple of months) when the toddler makes the baby smile. Magic.

EccentricPickle · 17/08/2016 21:54

I hate kids but I love newborns Grin. (I'm only joking, I don't really hate kids well not all of them).

Newborns are just gorgeous and snuggly. I love the way they're all curled up. I love their little furry heads, like baby monkeys, and I loved the fact that my newborns had tiny hairy tufts on the tops of their ears, like little Werewolves! Grin It disappeared after a few weeks, thank god - however cute on a newborn it's not cute when they're 10!

Seeing the oldest sibling's face light up when they see the baby for the first time. My oldest was 3 nearly 4 when her sister was born and she was smitten. Just thinking about it is making me well up now! She was the proudest big sister.

They're still best mates now and they're 5 and 9.

Dogsmom · 17/08/2016 21:59

The way they try and suckle your jawbone when you rub your face against them, the teeny fingers, the teeny bum cheeks and bandy legs, the feel of their fuzzy heads against your lips, being on maternity leave.
