What's great about newborns?

I'm due DC very soon, a very much wanted baby. But all I can think about is the pure exhaustion and anxiety that I had with my first! I know there were good things, my brain just seems to be filtering them out.

So, kind mumsnetters, tell me what is just brilliant about having a newborn and a toddler. No need to throw in a dose of reality, I'm full of those thoughts already!

Yy to velvety heads and the addictive baby head smell. they are addictive: you get a hormonal hit off cuddling them (i read a book about it!) and their head smell is actually addictive.

oh dear, feeling broody

Changingagain · 18/08/2016 11:38

They're so soft and tiny. Their favorite thing to do is just curl up on you and all I wanted to do when DS was newborn was cuddle him back.

You're not pregnant anymore but it still feels like they're part of you and you know that they feel the same. There's a connection that I really can't describe.

Before they can consciously make facial expressions, they make the cutest and funniest ones subconsciously as they're waking up.

You know that they're not going to be you're tiny baby for long but I looked forward to DS changing despite knowing that I'd miss those early days.

Oh, and the nappies are so much easier before weaning.

Changingagain · 18/08/2016 11:40

I'm all broody now and DS isn't even 1 yet.

If I could bottle baby breathe I sure would. It speaks volumes- the innocence, the love, the purity - everything. Smile

JeNeRegretteRien · 18/08/2016 13:48

The way they are so tiny and yet so powerful - tiny, kicking legs, rooting for milk, gripping your fingers in their miniature hands.

Putting them in a sling and hugging them close to you wherever you go.

Hearing people whisper as you go past, "Oh, look at the tiny baby!"

Random strangers congratulating you in the street.

Bath time.

frogmore · 18/08/2016 13:53

Thank you 'muchly' for the lovely thread- more of these please Grin

Ahhh I love this thread - my ovaries are melting here reading it!

The way you are their entire world. Their teeny tiny everything. Their smell, and their little sleepy snuffles. Little baby gros. The soft velvety skin. Their tiniest fingernails...

The way you fall in love like never before...

Araminta49 · 18/08/2016 14:11

Very sad trembly bottom lip - then a huge smile when comforted !

There is nothing nicer than a tiny baby drifting off to sleep in your arms. They just relax and they're so content and comfortable, it's lovely to sit with them and have a cup of tea.

Also if the baby like baths (and a lot of them do) putting them in and having them react and splash around for a while, then getting them all nice and dry and snuggly in a babygro afterwards, smelling lovely.

Neversleephamster · 18/08/2016 15:49

This thread is making me sad for DS's newborn days and he's only 5 months and slowly killing me.

WantAnOrange · 18/08/2016 16:03

Slow wavey hands when they sleep

DD2 used to suckle the end of her tongue to ask for a feed. It was adorable.

They way the scrunch up when you pick them up, little knees tucked up to their chest and for some reason the forehead goes all wrinkly and the eyebrows shoot up and they stretch their arms right up in the air. Then they do a funny head wiggle, then re....lax......

Thequilltosurvive · 18/08/2016 16:07

I came on to say their smell too. There's nothing in the world like milky baby smell. Ahhhhhh

I'm shitting it about the sleep deprivation too.

TheABC · 18/08/2016 16:38

The snuggles! You also appreciate the toddler and the baby for what they both bring to your life. The toddler can fetch things, walk, talk, put clothes on (and may sleep through the night). The baby is designed for cuddles, never gets really dirty, stays put in one place and is a doddle to feed.

Excuse me, I need to go and munch DD's feet now...

MTWTFSS · 18/08/2016 16:49

Baby sneezes!

Dontfencemein · 18/08/2016 17:36

The fact that when you look at your toddler bedside the newborn, the toddler will look like a lovely giant.

The way newborns are so small that you can cup their little bottoms in your hand when you feed them.

The way their little feet move when they are latching on followed by a relaxed crossing of the legs when they are satisfied. The same with their hands, clenched fists when they are hungry and then contented little pats of your breast (or bottle).

The fact that their absolute dependency on you will melt your heart.

I could go on and on. Good luck with everything. Everyone I know without exception enjoys their second and is far more relaxed than they were with their first.

PeppaIsMyHero · 18/08/2016 18:40

When they fall asleep on your chest - absolutely zonko for ages lying on you as though they are still part of you.

Ifiwasabadger · 18/08/2016 18:52

Lotsofdots best description ever of a newborn...velvety like a mole...love it! My three year old still has very little hair...I shall think of her as a mole from now on.

Love moles!

Poppyred85 · 18/08/2016 19:31

The smell, when they smile at you, milk comas, watching them sleep, seeing them grow and learning all about their personalities, snuggles, their soft hair, tiny little feet, did I mention the smell?... Oh dear I think my ovaries may have just burst....
Yes most babies/children are hard work at some point but so completely and totally worth it. At 3 ds has me pulling my hair out and laughing my head off, often within minutes of each other but I wouldn't change it for the world.
